MATHERS: Arnold of Exeter

March 14, 2026 By Haskett Funeral Homes 124 Condolences

MATHERS: Arnold of Exeter

Arnold Mathers of Exeter, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 13, 2026 at the age of 87. Surrounded by family, he eased his way into the next chapter of life with no regrets and deep thankfulness.

He leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife of sixty-seven years, Ila. Together they were boastfully proud of their children Dwayne (Debbie), Lorrie (Nathalie), and Suzanne (Brian). Arnold and Ila were blessed with nine grandchildren who brought him immense joy. Dwayneโ€™s children Brent (Amanda), Blake (Alexandra), and Kyle (Natalie). Lorrieโ€™s children Melanie (Jesse), Sarah, and Jonathan; and Suzanneโ€™s children Justin (Sara), Brock (Aliesha), and Drew (Hailey). Arnold was also a proud greatโ€‘grandfather to seven greatโ€‘grandchildren: Adia, Adeline, Harrison, and Keith, children of Brent and Amanda; Emmaline and Elowyn, children of Blake and Alexandra; and Scottie, daughter of Justin and Sara.

Arnold dedicated his professional life to education. After graduating from Wingham High School and Stratford Teachersโ€™ College, he began his career teaching in a oneโ€‘room rural school near Tiverton.  He married Ila Pengelly, then they moved to Toronto where he taught for five years. In 1964, after he received his BA from Western, they moved the family to Exeter, where Arnold became principal of Usborne Central School for two years and later Huron Centennial School in Brucefield for eighteen years. He completed his career serving with the Huron County Board of Education.

Although committed to education, Arnold never strayed far from his Huron County farming roots. Together with Ila and their children, he farmedโ€”raising beef cattle, growing cash crops, and operating a Christmas tree farm. Their restored log house near Wingham became a cherished gathering place for family reunions and celebrations.

Arnold was not one to sit back and wait for things to happen. He was always one step ahead, whether planning parties, trips, or family outings. He welcomed challenges at work and in the community, helping neighbours, volunteering at church, and building houses for Habitat for Humanity.

Humour was a big part of Arnoldโ€™s life. He loved telling jokes and humorous stories, many of which appeared in The Rural Voice and later compiled into books.

Arnold and Ila also shared a love of travel, exploring more than fifty countries and spending many winters in Florida, where they enjoyed many friends and activities. Arn was an avid golfer.

Arnold will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and greatโ€‘grandfather, respected educator, friend and enthusiastic traveller. Above all, he will be remembered for his deep love of family.

Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 456 Main Street South, EXETER on Sunday, March 22nd from 1 โ€“ 3 PM, where a celebration of Arnoldโ€™s life will be held at 3 PM. A spring interment will be held at Brandon Cemetery, Belgrave with the immediate family.

Stream the service live or at your convenience by visiting www.facebook.com/haskettfh

In lieu of flowers, donations in Arnoldโ€™s memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity Huron County or the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation-South Huron Trail. The family appreciates your kindness and support.

My sincere condolences go to Ila and all of Arnold’s family at this sad time. Arn was a dedicated educator, humanitarian and family man who always had time to help someone else. He was a man of many talents – educator, farmer, tour guide, story teller and writer, expert fund raiser and a dedicated family man. It was a pleasure to work with him when he was principal at Huron Centennial School and later at the Board Office.
He was as active in his retirement at Citrus Woods in Florida as he was when he was working. He organized events and gave a helping hand to everyone. He leaves behind a myriad of kind deeds, a wonderful family and thousands of friends who benefited from his kindness and generosity.

Dear Ila & Family, here it is the day before the funeral and we’re trying to figure out how you put a life time of memories into a few sentences. We loved that Arnold was always the same, always happy to see you and happy to spend time with you. It made you joyful just to be in his company. Arn loved his family, his friends and oh, how he loved life. He always found something interesting to do and loved to share in everything with his friends. One of the most gracious, kind and generous people we will ever know. Come summer, we are going to miss Arn calling us, and saying come on over for โ€œhappy hour,โ€ weโ€™ll barbecue and play some solo. The times we had in Florida & at the log cabin are some of our most cherished memories. Weโ€™ll miss travelling with Arn & and you, Ila. Some of the best trips and times we ever had. Arnold was a bright light that is now missing in our world, but we are so grateful that we were part of, and that we were able to share in Arnold’s life.

Rest in Peace Arn. You will not be forgotten. Shelley & Tim Sullivan

    To the entire Mather’s clan,

Sorry to hear of Arnold’s passing.
We all have many fond memories of Arnold at our family gatherings. He was the life of the party, a gifted story teller and a strategic card player (solo).
Mom & Dad enjoyed travelling with him and Ila to various locations over the years. They have many memories of those vacations. The one story that Dad shares is Arnold and some “chicken or duck foot” soup that Arnold had in Ecuador. If I recall correctly, the feet were actually in the soup and after finding that, Arnold didn’t finish his bowl.
Peter and I were honored to have him as the emcee at our wedding over 40 years ago. He did a great job as we expected he would. That was right up his alley.
Arnold liked to talk farming with Kevin. Although he shared lots of tips with Kevin, I’m not so certain that many of them were followed.
Arnold led a long and rewarding life; full of fun, hard work, adventure and family. He will be missed by many and our memories will keep him alive in our hearts for an eternity.
Rest in Peace Arnold, it is well deserved.

Dianna on behalf of the Leudke Clan

From Julie (Easterbrook) and Sam Dragich, Windsor
It is with deep sadness that we share our condolences with you, Ila, and the Mathers family. We recall that Arn was a resourceful and abundantly talented proud Canadian … a superb story teller and author. He always had the welcome mat out–and it was never more appreciated than when he included my new husband, Sam (now 31+ years) into his circle of friends. I particularly enjoyed our trip to Spain and the many staff excursions when I taught for him…as well as the good times we had in Wiarton and at the farmhouse outside of Wingham. Similarly, I will always remember the happy times we had in years gone by. Rest in peace, Arn,
Your old friends, Julie and Sam

To those who loved Arn, we send our condolences.
Arn made his mark with most everyone he met because his casual, yet positive way with people.
We experienced this with him and Ila at a dinner, just shortly before he departed from this earthly visit here on earth.
Arnold was ready for his new heavenly chapter, as he explained his situation to us (their new neighbors) quite openly. We appreciated his honestyโ€ฆ. but then he was a very honest man, wanting to make everyone around him comfortable.
Ila and Family, when you speak his name often, think of him with a smile or even a big chuckleโ€ฆ.It helps the ache in your heart.
    RIP โ€ฆ.job well done Arn!

    Dear Ila and family,

We were so sorry to hear the sad news about Arnold. We have so many fond memories of the Mathers’ family. Arnold was so very supportive of my ministry in Exeter United. His ffriendship, his time on the church coumcil and as chair of the worship committee were treasured gifts. The times we had with your faily still bring us joy: the pig roasts at the farm, the cottage at the Bend, survivinging the great snow storm with the children snowed in at the school and so much more. We remember all with such gratitude. We send our love in this difficult time.

    Ila, Dwayne & Debbie, Lorrie & Nathalie, Suzanne & Brian & families;

Our sincere condolences in the loss of Arnold. I first met โ€œMr. Mathersโ€ as a very young child. He & Ila were fellow educators and dear friends of my parents, Ron & Marilyn Heimrich. I remember at least one fun trip to the Mathers family farm. It was nice to get to know Arnold (& Ila) in my adult years, especially after my move back to Exeter in 1988. I had many, many good chats with Arnold over the years. It was always a pleasure to bump into Arn & Ila and catch up. Together, as they usually were, Arn & Ila were always very supportive of various milestones celebrated by my parents. That was always appreciated. His career, community involvement, philanthropy and volunteering for many good causes has made the greater South Huron/Huron County area a better place.
โ€œIโ€™ll always rememberโ€ my last visit with Arnold. I was happy to share the video and pictures with Arn & Ila, of the two dancing, as Crystal Gage sang that well known Ann Murray song โ€œCould I Have This Dance, for the rest of my lifeโ€ฆ.โ€. That was in Crediton last November. How beautifully appropriate after Arn had just proudly shared with the audience how many years they had been married!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. My Mom, Marilyn, also wishes to extend her sympathy to you all.
Rest in peace Arnold, well done, you get an A+.

I was very fortunate to have Arn as my principal for eighteen years of my teaching career. He knew exactly how to get the best from each of his teachers and he helped us to be an extremely close-knit staff. I remember what a sad day it was when he left us at Huron Centennial to work at the Board Office.

It is hard to believe that such an energetic and all round great guy has left this earthly domain but I know he is helping somewhere else. I got to know Arnold as my principal at Huron Centennial. He was the best. For 19 years he guided us though all sorts of educational events. He was the organizer of many educational trips to enlarge our knowledge of the world around us so we could bring this back to our students. He was kind and understanding, treating us not only as teachers and students but also like a very special family. Everyone was in his care and my family was especially aware of that when a very sad happening took place in our lives.
I know Ila and family and friends are going to miss him greatly but he has left them with a ton of wonderful memories and great times.
    This world needs more Arnolds.

    Habitat For Humanity Huron County:

Arn’s contributions to Habitat For Humanity have been immeasurable. Arn was our former Board Chair more than 10 years ago, and his energy drove many early successes. A terrific motivator and writer, and loved local history and shaping his community. Arne helped Habitat Huron County get our Donation truck, build several affordable homes in several towns throughout Huron County. Even when he wasn’t on our Board of Directors, Arn was a regular contributor to the cause of affordable housing in Huron County. Condolences to Arn and his loving family, and a sincere thank you for your care and service. Respectfully, Rob M. Evans Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity Huron County, and on behalf of Bill McAuslan our Board Chair, Bill Don (our former Chair), and the Habitat team
