You do not need to know what to do next.
When someone has died, the first step is simple: call us. We will help guide you through everything from there.
Our telephones are answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
One call is enough.
Whether a death has occurred at home, in hospital, at a nursing home, or unexpectedly, you do not need to understand the entire process before reaching out.
You do not need to know which paperwork is required, what decisions need to be made, or even which Haskett location may be best for your family. We will talk it through with you, answer your questions, and help you take the next step.
Even if a hospital, nursing home, or another organization has said they will contact us, we encourage families to reach out to us as well. This helps ensure nothing is missed and allows us to begin helping right away.
Every situation is a little different.
These are some of the most common circumstances families face. In every case, we are here to help.
A death has occurred at home
If the death was expected, we can help you understand who needs to be contacted and what happens next.
A death has occurred in hospital
Hospital staff will begin their own process, but your family should still contact us directly when you are ready.
A death has occurred in a hospice, nursing home or retirement residence
Nursing home and retirement residence staff often help with the first steps. We will work with them and with your family.
An unexpected death has occurred
If police or the coroner are involved, we can still help explain the process and support your family throughout.
What happens after you call?
We listen first.
We will ask a few simple questions so we understand where the death occurred and what help your family needs right away.
We help coordinate the next steps.
This may include speaking with a hospital, care home, physician, coroner, clergy, cemetery, or another organization involved.
We bring your loved one into our care.
When the necessary permissions are in place, we will arrange the transfer with care and respect.
We arrange a time to talk.
When your family is ready, we will discuss wishes, services, cremation or burial, obituary details, paperwork, and timing.
Information that may be helpful
You do not need to have everything ready before calling us. If possible, the following information can be helpful when we begin arrangements:
- Full legal name of your loved one
- Date and place of death
- Date of birth
- Next of kin or person responsible for arrangements
- Whether any pre-arrangements exist
- Doctor, hospital, nursing home, or coroner contact information
- Family wishes regarding burial, cremation, or services
- Clergy, church, cemetery, or community contacts
- Obituary information, when your family is ready
- Photos, clothing, or personal items, if desired
You are not bothering us.
This is what we are here for. Whether you need immediate assistance, have a question, or are simply unsure where to begin, please reach out.
