SHEPHARD: Douglas Lee of Grand Bend

April 11, 2025 By Haskett Funeral Homes 83 Condolences

SHEPHARD: Douglas Lee of Grand Bend

May 28, 1935 – April 8, 2025

Douglas Lee Shephard of Grand Bend passed away peacefully at Jessica’s House in Exeter, surrounded by much love. Cherished husband of Barbara (Knowles) Shephard for 65 years. Loving father of Erryn Shephard, Ellen McConnell and the late Bob McConnell, and Allyson and Howie Owens. Proud Poppi of Lexy McConnell and Bronwyn and Seamus Owens. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Leo and Susan Desjardine and sister and brother-in-law Cassie Anne Lovie, predeceased by Stan Lovie. Remembered by brothers-in-law Ralph Knowles (Mary Ann) and Ron Knowles as well as several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Melba Landstrom and Glenford Desjardine (Dorothy Hendron) and survived by his aunt, Helen Pirello.

As a teenager, Doug worked with his grandfather, Gordon Turnbull, to develop Turnbull’s Grove to what it is today. Fishing and hunting with his long-time buddies were annual events. He loved a good card game and taking holidays with his beloved Barbara. He was a great conversationalist, storyteller and he had a wonderful sense of humour! Above all, he was so proud of the love of his life and the family they grew together.

A private family memorial service will be held. A recording of Doug’s service will be available on the afternoon of Sunday, April 27th by visiting www.facebook.com/haskettfh.

Donations to Jessica’s House or South Huron Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

Douglas Lee was one in a million. We always looked forward to reuniting with Barb and him at the beginning of every summer season. He was the best resource for the history of Turnbull’s Grove and surrounding area. He will be truly missed, but we will always savour the wonderful memories: so many fun times.

I was saddened to hear about Doug’s passing and send my deepest sympathy to Barbara and family. I knew Doug from the time I was 4 years old and my parents bought a cottage in Windy Hill, the subdivision beside Turnbull’s Grove. His sense of humour and smile were infectious and he was very well liked. In later years I joined the Euchre Group playing at the Legion and Doug was just the same as I remembered from being a kid. He definitely left his mark with everyone who knew him.
