Dear Marion, Loreen and all the Hodgins family
I saw Roc’s obituary on the internet and wanted to pass on my condolences. My grandmother Nettie Paisley and Aunt Kate Roberts were sisters. Even though I had not seen Roc for many, many years, I always thought of him as my “exciting” cousin. None of my friends knew a crop-duster.
When I was a kid and Roc was in his early twenties he did crop-dusting near our farm in Lobo Township. He would buzz my parents’ bedroom window on the way to a job. That was the signal that he would be back for breakfast. He would land in our pasture and come in for breakfast. .
I know that he will be missed. As many people have said, he was a professional. He was also a very friendly and fun-loving person.

Paul: I remember most his smile as he climbed down from the aircraft in the late evening or morning after a successful mission. He was a pleasure to work with and his professionalism was matched by his ever present humour. Even those tough mornings when we had to “buy weather” the night before ended up being the stuff of legends.

My best wishes to you and your family

Roc & his late partner Doug Worgan may not have been pioneers in the arial spraying business but they certainly took it and elevated it to a higher level. Roc was respected throughout the industry for his forward thinking.
We are proud to call him a friend from his earliest days in aviation. Our thoughts are with the whole family at this time.

    To Roc’s Family.

I am so sorry to hear of Roc’s passing. Roc was one of the first “contractors” that I got to work with and he set the bar! He is and will remain one of my fondest memories from my career at MNR. The cold winter winds and the hot summer mornings on some remote airstrip in NW Ontario, regardless of the situation, when Roc was there, there was always good stories, and warm smiles.

I’ve missed the sessions where we were “weathered out” and Roc and Paul would get a chance to come by with the “boys” and enjoy an evening of good food, good wine and good friendship.

A gentleman, a professional, a proud family man and most especially a dear friend.

Thanks for sharing him with us.

Roc truly was a pioneer in our industry and exemplified all that was good about it and the people that worked in it.

Without the help of Roc and his partner Doug I am fairly certain
I would not be in the aerial application industry today. When my father started his own business in 1975 with one Stearman purchased from General Airpsray we had very little work and probably would not have survived. Roc and Doug provided us with much needed work on their forestry contracts which greatly helped ensure our survival until we could stand on our own feet.

It was during those early years that I worked with Roc and came to admire and greatly respect him. He was a hard working family man of integrity and honesty. Getting the job done was always priority one, but never at the expense of quality or expediency.

Even after his retirement from flying you could always find him close to the hangar helping out Paul. A true professional, a pleasure to work and socialize with, and a credit to our industry.

    He will be missed!

My sincerest condolences to Marion, Paul and the Hodgins family.

As I read the other condolensces, I can see that he touched many lives…May those memories live on within your families … The closeness of your family, the career that took him away from home for long periods of time and how you made it all work is something to be proud of and a true testiment of the love that you all shared.

To what Stephen Nicholson said, I would add that, over the last 30 years, when we (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resourcres and Canadian Forestry Service) wanted to conduct application technology research, we often turned to General Airspray because of the professionalism, knowledge, cooperative attitude and desire to develop ways to do the job better of Roc & Doug, and later Paul.

There is barely a forest growing in northern Ontario that Roc and his former partner, Doug Worgan, were not instrumental in growing and protecting. Roc was truly one of the pioneers in forestry aviation in Canada, and he was incredibly well respected , incredibly well- known and, of course, incredibly well liked throughout the North.
Roc had an engaging smile and he brought out the best in people. Incredibly patient, Roc could wait for days, often in less than ideal living conditions, until the weather conditions were right to continue flying his sturdy round-engined biplanes. Junior Ranger camps, narrow bush roads and blue skies were his office.

Across Ontario, foresters, agronomists and research scientists all looked to Roc for advice on how best to use aircraft and application technology to safely and efficiently grow and manage our forests.
There are pictures and memories of Roc and his airplane throughout northern Ontario; the forests of northern Ontario are a living tribute to Roc.

    Marion and family, my condolences
