PFAFF: Karen (Heywood) of Exeter

September 12, 2025 By Haskett Funeral Homes 194 Condolences

PFAFF: Karen (Heywood) of Exeter

I am thankful to be able to pass away at the time of my choosing on September 12, 2025 together with the love and support of Jim, the man I loved for 60 years, my 3 precious loves, Victoria, Jeffrey (Jennifer) and Debra, my 5 grandchildren, Justine (Tyler), Christopher (Samantha), Nicole (Kendall), Brittney (Graham), Mitchell (Sofia) and 3 additional gifts, our 3 great grandchildren, Kinsley, Rowan and Carter. Sometimes it takes dying to really learn how precious life really is. As I complete my final journey today, I am here to help you join me in smiling as I reminisce about each and every one of you and what you meant in my life.

Falling in love with Jim at 15 years of age ended up as a memory that lasted for 60 years.  It was a time filled with laughter, tears, challenges and adventures.  Would I change a single thing along the way, well those that know my Jim a little, would forgive me a minute to dwell on that one, but no, of course not!  In search of a best friend, I found a diamondโ€ฆ..and it was you, Jim!  Thank you for being my best friend for a lifetime. Sometimes when we least expect it, life is changed and forever rearranged. What did happen, is that I came to understand my illness better than I thought I ever would.

Vicki, Jeff and Debra, I am leaving you without treasures or possessions other than my love, I am leaving you with the certainty that the three of you were my purpose, and my reason for being. I am leaving you with the belief that you are strong enough to face anything life puts in your path, because I know you can.  And I am leaving you with the promise that my love for you did not end after taking my last breath โ€“ it will walk beside you every step of your life.  I will always be your safe place when you need me, you can count on that.

I cannot finish my obituary without mentioning the amazing Dr. Jerry Jadd.  Here is a dedicated doctor who has been with my family and myself every step of my journey.  Without a second thought, he has given me his professional time & his encouragement and made my pain and nausea comfortable for all these weeks and months.  He has a special gift that cannot be replicated.  And so, I thank him from the bottom of my heart for that!  May his gift be his legacy to a journey well-travelled.

Most important were the times that Iโ€™ve had to spend with visits from friends and family who meant so much to me. Weโ€™ve had the chance to reminisce over memories and events. Times filled with laughter and the simple joy of sitting together with nothing pressing on the calendar and nowhere important to go. Too often we are given the time but never use it. I learned that we should. Please take the time as you grow old to realize how precious time really is. For all these reasons, what a gift to share and receive.

A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to Jessicaโ€™s House or a charity of your choice.

Sending our sincerest sympathies to you Jim, and your extended families. So many great memories with Karen. She will forever be remembered for her genuine smile and laugh. She was always a ‘get it done’ gal. Smart business woman (Looking Good was an awesome store). And our kids have fond memories of Karen’s hospitality in the horse barns in Sarnia. We enjoyed going to the races and spending time with Karen & Jim. Larry is reminded of stories of his mom/dad (Audrey & Russell) going to the Little Brown Jug race with you (Jim, Karen) … so many laughs about that trip.

Jim, we are thankful you and Karen got a visit in with us in Kincardine after our move.

    Dear Jim and family:

So sorry to hear of Karen’s passing. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

    Bill and Darlene

I have known Karen all my life. We went to school together in Exeter, and later our husbands played ball together for the infamous Exeter Expos. Many years later Bill and I had the honour of attending Karen and Jim’s 50th wedding anniversary down in Florida. However, my favourite memory of Karen occurred several years ago when I golfed with Karen, Marj Green and my cousin Lynne Farquhar at the Exeter Golf Course. We had so much fun. I will always remember her laugh. Rest in peace Karen.

Jim, Victoria, Jeff, Debra & Families:
My sincerest condolences on the passing of your dear wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Iโ€™ve known Karen most of my life and she was an absolute gem. We had good times when I was younger and we were all involved in the local skating community and more recently when I did some upholstery jobs for her. I always enjoyed her company and the great conversations we had over the years. Sheโ€™ll will be sorely missed.
