PAPPLE: Douglas Leroy

June 28, 2001 By Leave A Condolence

PAPPLE: Douglas Leroy Papple, of Grand Cove Estates in Grand Bend, died of heart failure on June 28, 2001, just eleven days before his 79th birthday. Dougโ€™s health declined after a small heart attack and the onset of temporal ateritis in January. He spent his final two months under the nurturing care of the people at Queensway Nursing and Retirement Home in Hensall. Doug was the beloved son of Harry Elwood Papple of Harrisburg, Ontario and Mary McDowall of Glasgow, Scotland. He grew up on a farm in Harrisburg and attended Brantford Collegiate Institute from 1935 to 1939. His first job was with CIBC in Brantford, which he left to enlist in the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps in London. After discharge, he worked for Millard, Rouse and Rosebrough, a chartered accounting firm in Brantford. Then he joined the Foreign Exchange Control Board in Ottawa. He returned to Brantford to work for Shoreline Transport Ltd. and then became a partner in Jones Transport. He tried his hand at insurance sales for a couple of years with the Canadian Order of Foresters and then joined the Watrus Company in Brantford. This led to a job as comptroller of Avery Scales in Montreal and later as comptroller of the Robert Morse Scale Company in Toronto. After retirement, Doug spent three years as comptroller of J.G. Marston Company in Toronto. From his youth, Doug remained an avid and skilful golfer for his entire life. He won many gold championships throughout the years and often represented his Scale Company in tournaments throughout North America. In 1952, Doug married the late Eileen Cook. When they left Toronto in 1990, they chose to settle in Grand Cove Estates at Grand Bend. There, Doug enjoyed golfing with his buddies at Oakwood. He also joined the Grand Bend Dart League and spent many happy hours with his dart-playing pals. His beloved wife, Eileen Cook, his son-in-law George Cressman and his granddaughter, Heather Cressman, predeceased Doug. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Wendy Banting, and her husband Peter, of Ancaster, Ontario and by his grandchildren Rob and Marcie Clawson of Chicago, Illinois and Matt Cressman of Maitland, Florida. He will be dearly missed by his sisters, Muriel Forrest of Scarborough, Ontario, and Marion Pulham of Peterborough, Ontario and by his nieces and nephews. Specials thanks to Alfred and Kathleen Maggs and to Dougโ€™s other concerned neighbours and to the members of Dougโ€™s Dart League who were so helpful to him. Cremation has taken place and Dougโ€™s remains will be interred with his wife at Greenwood Cemetery in Burlington, Ontario. A reception in remembrance of Doug Pappleโ€™s life will take place at Grand Bend in September. Expressions of sympathy can be made through the charity of your choice.
