My visits to Zurich will be short a visit with one very special character. Although time and distance had separated us, when we met it was as if time stood still – he was always the same warm, fun, wisecracker who was a part of my life in Zurich.
Sincere condolences to Rudy’s immediate and extended families. I can barely imagine how he will be missed.

From a very early age, I would always love going to visit my Uncle Rudy (and his other 2 brothers) in their apartment above the old grocery store. I am not sure who was more exited every Tuesday night, Uncle Rudy or myself but he would make sure I had one of my favourite meals for Mom to bring over to me while I was at the arena skating. His potato skins were my favourite, and it is safe to say we all feel the same about them. No matter what he had going on at his place with his buddies he always made time for me when I was over.

I remember when I was younger and I would call to talk to him and ask if my Uncle Randy was there. So many times who ever answered would sound confused and ask me who I was looking for. I could never get my head wrapped around why no one ever called my Uncle by his real name or anyone else for that matter in Zurich. But as the years by I joined the bandwagon and it became Uncle Rudy.

In my younger days, he would tell me that I was never to date a Zurich boy…. well long and behold I am married to one. He could not have been more “stoked” in his words when he found out I was dating Dave and gave me the classic Rudy thumbs up, and a comment along the lines of ” he is good shit”

We all know his love for the Montreal Canadians, I myself have never been a hockey fan but he would always tell me that I should only cheer for them. I am not sure who decided it was a great idea to buy him a toaster that would press the Montreal Canadians logo onto bread but he received that from someone and had a brainwave to make me a toast bikini with the Montreal Canadians logo on it for the “stupidest gift” gift exchange we have at family Christmas. I can still remember the look on his face when I put it on over my clothes…. I can also remember the look on my brothers face.

I am going to miss the thumbs up, the grins, the hugs and just the easy going times sitting in a lawn chair beside this guy. I am so thankful for the time I have had with him over the years, and will never forget his love for life. Uncle Rudy was always the life of the party, and anyone who met him knows how much he loved life and enjoyed spending it with his friends drinking a cold one. Cheers to you Uncle Rudy!!

Where do you begin to talk about someone who truly was so full of life? His spirit was bright and laughter contagious. When uncle Rudy told a story you couldn’t help but listen and most times laugh along the way he always had his “audience” engaged. His quick wit, sharp tongue and sarcastic humour are something I will miss the most, but may have also be something I have inherited from the stubborn McKinnon gene pool. He may have also had a knack for easing the tension when the boys got into a “discussion,” usually sports related. This was likely because he was a die-hard Habs fan who we all know rarely have anything to celebrate. I am certain that he was laughing his ass off as he watched his brothers and sister sport all the habs gear they could find in his memory. In fact, knowing him he likely would have said this was all worth it just to see Dad (Kim) and Uncle Kevin especially sport the blue and red.

Regardless of how long it went between seeing him, it was always as if no time had passed as he was always his true to form self and wanting to know what has been keeping his niece busy. I am sure that everyone who knew him can remember that at one point he sported the mullet/rat tail way past its prime. This was always something he and I would go back and forth about, me asking him when he was going to cut it off and him making some smart remark about his beloved hair. A trademark for years and I must say that I am still shocked he ever decided to sport a real hairstyle and just a little sad he will not be around for when this comes back in style as I am sure it would be something I would hear about.

At our last annual McKinnon gathering he joked with me and said I “got lazy” that year because I did not make cupcakes he said he had been waiting all year for and brought something premade. So, my promise to Uncle Rudy is that no annual McKinnon gathering will ever be without cupcakes again in his memory, just don’t tell Uncle Wayne they are not really for him because he might get jealous.

I am confident that years from now as family and friends in our little Community and beyond continue to share stories it will be about Rudy, the Man, The Myth, The Legend!

Brudder – Rooster where do i start, what do i say. Thought i would cut the grass to put in time before the visitation, cutting the grass was always something you had to do when we were younger ( cuz i had bad hay fever remember- SUCKER ). I’m surprised dad lived as long as he did with the things we put him through growing up, if we actually ever did, always pushing the limits of society. from the bridge diving, our training sessions, touring ( back when it was legal ) and all the other stuff brothers did that stays between them. I always wanted my kids to think i grew up a saint but i know thanks to you it never happened because you were always flapping about something we did or i did when family sitting around having a beer, laughing all the time while telling the story. There wasn’t once in their lives that my kids didn’t laugh (a lot of times until almost crying ) at something you said or did when you were around ( Judy too ). People should know she taught you how to make those famous potatoes of yours.
I think about how my projects will go without you around for help and entertainment. You teasing Jeff about him being a truck driver obviously not a construction guy. For a guy that never had a family of his own I always had to prearrange everything because you always had something planned with one of the buddies. I think of all the sports we played – as teammates and competitive foes, golf outings ( i hope you beat me in heaven because you never did on earth ).
I know you wont be lonely where you are now as unfortunately some old friends and buddies have also went ahead of their time also. So all you guys have fun carrying on up there because its a fact that we are all coming see you all sometime.
It wasn’t in our DNA to say I love you but know you were and that you will be missed and thought about everyday until we meet again,
P.S. – At the hospital i laughed because nobody knew how you got your nickname, we both got ones that stuck for life in high school ( but that is a Zurich tradition, nobody is called by their real name ). So here’s a hint- Rudy you were the conductor of that train steering it whenever, wherever ,however you felt your whole life, whatever happened happened. How many times did we listen to that Supertramp song.
    CATCH YA LATA, ROOSTER.

Rudy had a special relationship with everyone he knew and there was no one else like him. He was the most welcoming guy, just an around happy person. He taught me many things, one of which was to play hockey. He was a very special character who had the ability to touch the lives of everyone he met in a positive way, just by being himself.
    Miss you buddy.

To the entire McKinnon family. We were so shocked and saddened to hear of Rudy,s passing. He will be dearly missed by all entire family. He was such a huge part of our family and would always ask about the grandchildren and knew each of them by name. I will really miss our Friday night visits thru the summer @ the “porch party”. He rarely missed a week. We would get all caught on the weekly TV shows and the town news. Super Bowl Sunday also will never be the same again without Rudy,s famous potato skins. My kids would fight over them to see who might get to take home the leftovers.
I know that Dino and Rudy will be sharing a cold one soon and be looking down at us all with their huge smiles and making sure we are all behaving.

    To the Entire McKinnon clan,
The first memory of Rudy that came flooding back when I heard of his passing were his amazing roller skating abilities. I was always so envious of the way he would glide around the rink. He also had a knack of giving nicknames to people that stuck for lifetimes. To the family you have my sincere condolescences. Rudy was a true friend who will be sorely missed by those who knew him.

To the entire Mckinnon families and the Turkheim families:

Living across from the Mckinnon’s for my younger years was great. They were like a second family with older brothers and a older sister i never had. Granny would keep you all in place… She was a sweetheart!! One of my best times spent with Rudy was just December 5th 2015 at my son’s wedding at Hessenland. A old friend of his invited him which is a friend of ours . We partied into the wee hours of the nite after mine and Mikes duties were done as parent’s of the groom. Rudy always knew when he ran into me what my sayin was before i had the chance to say anything which was “Livin the Dream” keep ur stick on the ice and ride that wave!! He was a GREAT FREIND. We will miss him LARGE!!!

RIP RUDY WE LUV YOU and will miss you!!

MEMORIES , MEMORIES SO MANY. RUDY HAS BEEN A BROTHER TO ME MY WHOLE LIFE. MANY NIGHTS I MEAN ALL NIGHT KEVIN AND RUDY WOULD ARGUE SPORTS , ESPECIALLY HOCKEY KEVIN BEING A LEAF FAN.
HE WAS THERE WHEN WE WERE MARRIED. HE HELD MY KIDS IN HIS ARMS. PLAY HOCKEY , BALL AND GOLF WITH HIM.. HE WOULD TEASE KEVIN THAT HE TAUGHT THEM ALL THEY KNEW. HE WATCHED JESS GET MARRIED AND LOVED HER SON AS MUCH AS ANYONE.. MACE CAME OVER LAST WITH A HABS JERSEY ON THAT UNCLE RUDY GAVE HIM. HE TOLD ME HE NOW WAS CHEERING FOR THE HABS BUT DO NOT TELL PEPE OR HE WOULD GET MAD . I LAUGHED SO HARD. MEMORIES CHERISH THE MEMORIES. I CAN SEE HIM WITH PAT AND LEON RIGHT NOW HAVING A COLD ONE.. LOVE YOU RUDY
