HIGGINS: Kenneth “Higgi” Douglas of Brussels

October 11, 2025 By Haskett Funeral Home 89 Condolences

HIGGINS: Kenneth “Higgi” Douglas of Brussels

Passed away suddenly on Thursday, October 9, 2025 at the age of 62. Beloved husband of Kim (McWhirter) Higgins, sharing 35 wonderful years together and married for 31 of them. Loving father of Kody Higgins, and Taylor Higgins. Adored papa of Jack, Leo; Evelyn, Berkley, and Ellianna. Dear brother of Deb Oliver and brother-in-law of Isabel White (Len), Tracey and Paul McArter, and Brian White (Cathy). Cherished son-in-law of Gloria McWhirter and Doug Murray. Fondly remembered by his nephews, Curtis (Michelle), Kane (Jess), Ryan (Taylor), Konrad, and David, niece, Nicole (Catlin) and by his many great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents John and Marilyn (Goll) Higgins, brother-in-law John Oliver and father-in-law Elvin McWhirter.

Ken had a deep love for the outdoors, spending countless hours hunting and fishing whenever he could. For many years, he dedicated his time and courage as a volunteer firefighter with the Brussels Fire Department and gave back to his community as a proud member of the Optimist Club. A true sports enthusiast, he was dedicated to baseball and hockey, proudly refereeing and umpiring for many years. Whether at the arena or the ball field, his booming voice, quick wit, and sense of humour made him a familiar and cherished presence. Above all, Ken adored his children and grandchildren. They were his greatest joy and meant the world to him. His caring nature, unmistakable laugh, and fondness for a Black Label in hand will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Cremation to take place. A private family service will be held at a later date.

A public celebration of Higgi’s life will be held at the BMG Community Centre, 800 Sports Drive, BRUSSELS on Friday, October 17th from 3 – 6 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations to an Education fund for Ken’s grandchildren – payable to Kim Higgins, Blyth-Brussels Minor Hockey, or Brussels Minor Ball in Ken’s memory would be appreciated by the family.

Kim and family, so sorry for your loss. Higg and I were freinds for a long time, but I really got to know him when I briefly worked with him at Morris/Turnberry. We had a lot of laughs in that short time, too many to list but the best part of it was I got to know him on a different level. I learned that it was family first from him, and he absolutely loved his family and friends. I am honoured to have been a part of his life and his brutal honesty. There truly was only one and only Higg in this world RIP Higgi.

Dear Kim, Kody, Taylor, and families,

Words cannot express the depth of emotions that were felt by us when we heard of Higgi’s passing. For me, not only was Ken a friend, he was literally family. There hasn’t been a time when Ken wasn’t in our lives. I have so many wonderful memories of Kenny (including singing at your wedding), but the one that still causes myself, my sister, and my parents to smile the most was when Tina and I made up a chant for Ken when he was a teenager, and we were children. Ken played ball for my dad in Winthrop, and during one game, Higgy got up to bat, and Tina and I, at the top of our voices chanted, “Come on Higgi, you can do it! Put a little wiggle to it!”…..he hit a grand slam over the fence! Ken still recalled that moment a few weeks ago when they were catching up. He will be missed by so many people in the Brussels community because he was such an important part of it. Our wee village has lost such a great human. My deepest sympathies. May all the wonderful memories you have of him help you through these days and weeks ahead. Thinking of you all.

The world lost a great guy last Thursday. Higgy was one of a kind. He absolutely adored his kids and grandkids and he was such a sport enthusiast whether it be playing ball, umping, reffing or coaching. We always had the best of times with Higgy whether it was at a campfire at FP or when he came to watch our kids play hockey. He had a great sense of humour and always had a sarcastic, cheeky comment. Cheers to the legend himself, Mr. Black Label. Sending our sympathy to Kim, Kody, Taylor, and those precious grandkids who lost their papa far too soon.

Dear Higgins and McWhirter Families, So sorry to read of Ken passing. Although I did not knows him personally, my mother, Jeanne Ireland taught both Ken and Debbie in Kindergarten years ago. The Higgins family was part of the fabric of Brussels during my growing up years. Ken chose to remain in Brussels, marrying and raising a family there. His involvement in minor sports and as a volunteer fireman made him a valuable asset to his community. May this time of sadness and sorrow give way later to memories and stories bringing smiles to your lips instead of tears to your eyes. Sincerely, Joyce King (Ireland)

Higgi was not only a great snowplow operator, but he was also my weatherman, letting me know when I should stay home from work because of the weather. I will miss our 5am chats with you as you drove by in the snowplow. Maybe that’s why you had to be pulled out of the ditch a time or two!
More importantly, he was a great friend. We will miss his care, concern, wit and sarcasm.
Kim, Cody and Taylor, you have such great support from family, friends and the entire community during your time of grief. We are all here for you, just as he would have been here for anyone else.

Our Ball Diamond dates were always fun and deep analysis always followed ! Brian knew him better than both my sports boys he pumped and reffed them too. We will miss him greatly and every ball diamond will have a whole in it forever more

Kim, Cody, Taylor & grandkids. I am so terribly sorry for your loss. I’ve known Ken for many years dating back to our younger years, camping at family paradise and on the ball field. So grateful for the visit we had just a few weeks ago while he was umpiring in Mitchell. One of a kind, wonderful guy and always with a smile and a friendly conversation. One of my favorites..he will be missed by many.
