GRAY: Kevin of Walkerton

April 27, 2025 By Haskett Funeral Home 37 Condolences

GRAY: Kevin of Walkerton

Kevin Gray passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Jessica’s House Hospice, Exeter on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at the age of 73. Beloved husband of the late Lynn Gray for over 47 years. Cherished father of Adam, Dennis (Lisa), and Carolyn (Jordan). Proud granddad to Taylor, Ryan, and Julia. Dear brother of Rob (Sue) Gray, and Mary (the late Sam) Young. Fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Robert and Margaret Gray and parents-in-law Burke and Geraldine Stannard.

Kevin was a longtime resident of Walkerton who dedicated his life to education and community, inspiring generations of students as a beloved teacher, vice principal, and coach at Sacred Heart High School. He was fondly remembered by many as one of their favourite teachers, known for his kindness, dedication, and genuine care. Summers were spent alongside his wife, building a successful perennial business, spending countless hours outdoors, and transforming their property into a beautiful space full of life and colour. A proud supporter of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he loved cheering on his team every season. His loyalty and commitment also shone through in his friendships, as he rarely missed his treasured weekly breakfast with close friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Cremation has taken place.

Donations to Jessica’s House Hospice would be appreciated by the family.

I met Kevin in 1985. From the start, I sensed that this was a man of integrity, with a sense of humour, a generous and kind man. Eventually, I married his wife’s sister and in the years that followed, the families enjoyed many happy occasions together at both the home in Walkerton and our homes in the GTA.
Together, we saw all of the children grow into adulthood and launch their own careers. He loved his children greatly and was proud of their achievements. When grandchildren came along, he gave them as much love as he had given his own children. Together, we endured the passing of our wives from very similar diseases. Unfortunately, as he managed the trauma of Lyn’s death, he was battling the disease that eventually took his life. He and I had one final conversation on March 31, 2025. Even then he was looking forward to the Summer. Alas, it was not to be. I mourn my friend. I will miss our chats about the world, and our shared laughter about the absurdity of life at times.
I offer my condolences to Adam, Dennis, Lisa, and their children , Carolyn and Jordan and Kevin’s siblings, Rob and Mary. Heather, I regret that you did not have more time with him to get to know him as I did. He was a man with a big heart, easy smile and respected and loved by his fellow teachers, students and the community. “Kevin, Your spirit lives on in many a heart, your words captured and never to depart.” May he rest in peace.

It is with great sadness i write this condolence. Yes Mr Gray was my teacher at Sacred Heart. Mr. Gray and i crossed paths at my Job many years later. I continued to call him Mr. Gray one day he looked at me and said we are not in school anymore, call me Kevin. It was the hardest habit to break. We had many laughs over me having a hard time remembering to call him Kevin. I looked forward to hearing his stories and we always had lots of laughs. I know i will always remember Kevin. Treasure your memories and just know he will always be with you.

Our condolences to the entire Gray family on the passing of Kevin. Kevin, like Lynn before him, was a vibrant part of the Sacred Heart High School community in Walkerton, in his teaching and VP duties, in his support of Crusader Sports and yes, even in the arts. Kevin was always tuned into the needs of the students. He was a great sport, even making comical guest appearances in student assemblies, and in plays. His ready smile and kind words were a key part of his raison d’être. He also went out of his way to acknowledge people, by calling up individuals to wish them a Happy Birthday or to check in to see how friends were doing, long after his teaching days were over. So, look up to the stars and when you see that twinkle in the night sky, it will be the sparkle of Kevin’s positive energy force still shining on.

Dear Adam, Dennis, Carolyn and family,
Please accept our condolences on the passing of your father. When we moved to Hanover in 1979 Kevin and Lynn were our first friends. Since they lived in Hanover at that time Kevin drove me to SHHS each day. Kevin recruited Brian to play on the Gophers, a mostly teachers’ baseball team. We spent a lot of time at their property outside of Walkerton – buying perennials, cauliflower, cutting down a tree for Christmas, picking corn stalks for decor, attending Hallowe’en parties, and sharing meals over the years.
Kevin was kind, funny, generous and a special friend to both of us. He will be missed.

Kevin was a great friend and colleague. When he went back to the classroom he resumed coaching hockey — one of his greatest loves. He guided the Sacred Heart boys hockey team to multiple BAA championships, double CWOSSAA championships – a first in school history — and two OFSSA elite eight finishes, another first for boys athletics! His greatest joy, however, was coaching his son, Dennis on those teams. His true devotion was always to his family! Go Leafs! Go Crusaders!
