FREIHAUT: Peacefully, at Exeter Villa Nursing Home, Exeter, on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, Elizabeth “Liz” (Merli) Freihaut of Exeter, formerly of Shipka (RR 2, Dashwood), age 91. Beloved wife of the late Johan “John” Freihaut (2006). Loved mother and mother-in-law of John and Nancy Freihaut of Oakville, the late Mary Torok (2019). Loving grandma of Sean Freihaut and his wife Jennifer Edwards, Erica Freihaut and her husband Guy Massie and Stephanie Torok. Cherished great-grandma of Emily, Catherine, Lucy and Leo. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Katie and Tony Penz, Frank and Janice Merli. Remembered by her nieces, nephews and their families. Predeceased by her parents Joseph and Teresa (Matiyevic) Merli, siblings and in-laws Teresa and Franz Sampli. At Liz’s request, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, 160 Francis Street, Exeter, on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at 3 p.m. For those unable to attend there will be a Zoom, to access the zoom call please use this code 925 867 0592; with the password 5265205 Arrangements entrusted to the T. Tante Lisi was a big part of my childhood; my mom’s older sister, she was like my second mom.
What I remember about her, is her generosity: her generosity of spirit, her generosity of patience towards a city girl visiting the farm, her generosity of good humor, her generosity of laughter, her generosity of fellowship, her generosity of knowledge, teaching me how to do things – whether feeding the chickens, or making cookies.
But most of all I remember her love: unjudgemental, unconditional, all encompassing and unwavering.
Tante Lisi, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for being you, thank you for being in my life.

Our deepest condolences to the Freihaut family,. Liz and John moved to Shipka around 1992 and we were their next door neighbors . Our family became good friends too, Liz will always be remembered for her profound hospitality, vibrant faith and community involvement! As a caring grand mother ,she invited the neighborhood children and adults too ,for frequent meals of home-made pasta ,cabbage rolls and home made cookies. She frequently played board games with the children.Uno seemed to be her favorite! She was also an excellent knitter and didn’t mind taking orders for sweaters ,scarves, wash cloths,etc as any project was possible as long as we provided the wool. Once John passed away Liz initiated a weekly home-made soup luncheon for her widowed neighbors. My life is much richer for meeting such a beautiful ,mother-like friend. May she rest in Peace.
