Doris Alma Fielding (nee Toogood), of Grand Bend, Ontario died peacefully at 98 years of age surrounded by her extended family, at Jessica’s House Hospice, Exeter, Ontario on March 22, 2025.

Doris, born and raised in Toronto, is predeceased by her parents Alma and Alexander Toogood, brothers John Howard Toogood (Jack), Alexander Edgar Toogood (Ted). Her younger siblings William (Bill) and Margaret predeceased her in childhood. Doris also had a half sister, Charmaine.

As a teenager, Doris helped with the WWII effort as a Farmerette harvesting grapes in the Niagara Peninsula. She then became a nurse, graduating from Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. Doris married Dr. Joseph William Fielding on January 21, 1950, in Toronto. She and her husband lived in Haworth, New Jersey and raised their children there. Every summer, without fail, they retreated to their cottage on Lake Huron’s shores.

Doris was the President of the New Jersey Chapter of the Womenโ€™s Club. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and English, Summa Cum Laude, from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. Doris was a sculptress and received multiple awards for her art. Doris states her greatest accomplishment was raising her children.

Doris is survived by:

Pamela Joan Fielding, son Ceilidh Shipley (Danielle, children Amelia and Lyon).

Bruce Robertson Fielding (Kathryn), daughter Stephanie Anne, son Matthew Robertson (Katrine Rivard, children Oscar and Felix), son Samuel Stuart (deceased).

Cameron Alec Fielding (infant, deceased).

    Bruce and Family,
As Beach O’ Pines residents, we had the pleasure of chatting with Doris from time to time as we were out walking. My 2 older sisters were also Farmerettes so we had plenty to talk about. A wonderful woman, warm, caring of others and interesting with a dash of humour always thrown in. She led a life well lived and will be missed by so many of her huge family and friends. Our sincere condolences.

I had the fortune and pleasure of meeting Dolores through Shannon 12 years ago. In the five years I was in her orbit, she was always the kindest, most welcoming personโ€”with just the right dash of spunk. A queen among many. Sending love and appreciation to the entire Murray/Fielding family. โค๏ธ

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Doris Fielding and wish to express our heartfelt condolences to her family. It was a privilege to be part of the cherished family cottage experience in Grand Bend, alongside Dr. Fielding and Doris. Together, we helped establish a lasting cottage traditionโ€”one of the first cottages we built in the area over 40 years ago.

Over the years, we were fortunate to see Doris and her family from time to time as they returned to the cottage and as some made Grand Bend their home. Doris may be gone, but her warmth and the memories created at the cottage will live on.

May you continue to find comfort in those treasured moments.

    With sympathy,

    Randall S. Oke
