Peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, Hennie passed on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2026, in her 76th year. For almost fifty-one cherished years, she was a devoted, loving wife and best friend to Ken — a true partner in every sense of the word. They are a love at first sight story, engaged on their third date and wed a mere nine months after meeting. Through seasons of change, triumph, challenge, laughter, and quiet everyday moments, their love remained constant. They built a marriage and family rooted in commitment, respect, and deep affection. Their love story stands as a lasting example to all who were lucky enough to witness it.
As a mother to her children – Kate, Kara & Aaron, Kelly & Paul and Kyle & Sandra – she was their steady foundation and guiding light. She was proud of each of them, celebrated every achievement, offered counsel in difficult times, unconditional love and gave her children the confidence to walk boldly in the world, always knowing they had a safe place to return.
Her joy multiplied with each of her grandchildren – Jesse (Eden), Emily, Hannah (Jackson), Madison (Denver), Ava, Lucas, Logan and Makala. She delighted in their milestones, stories, laughter, and dreams. Whether offering warm hugs, thoughtful advice, or simply listening with a full heart, she made each grandchild feel uniquely treasured.
The blessing of her five great-grandchildren – Theodore, Finneas, Henry, Emerson & Clara – brought her immense pride and happiness and she cherished the time she was able to spend with them.
She is predeceased by her parents, Pieter and Egberdina Hoekstra, in-laws Louis and Cecelia Farwell, sister in law Faye and brothers in law David & John. Hennie is loved and will be missed dearly by her siblings – Jake & Merle, Jurrie & Karen, Hilrita & John and Geraldine & Patrick as well as by the Farwell family – Don & Stella, Dorothy & Rick, MaryAnne, Berni & Sandra, Ed, Rita, Joe & Melinda, and Tim, and by Marilyn – her best friend of over 40 years, as well as by her many nieces, nephews and friends.
Though our hearts ache in her absence, we are comforted knowing that her life was rich with meaning and love. The family & friendships she nurtured stand as her legacy — each of whom will carry her memory forward in the way they live, love, and care for one another.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered. Her love remains — in every story shared, every lesson remembered, and every embrace between the generations she helped create.
Many thanks are offered to the team of professionals who guided and supported Hennie over the last few years, especially Dr. Bevan, Karrie and Erin, her amazing primary care team, who never failed to give her a hug, bring a smile to her face and took exceptional care of her.
A Celebration of Hennie’s Life will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 456 Main Street South, EXETER on Saturday, May 23rd from 11am – 2pm with a private family internment to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Cystic Fibrosis Canada, Epilepsy Southwestern Ontario, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

Kate and the Farwell family,
I am very sorry to hear about Hennie’s passing. She was such a beautiful person. I met Hennie back in 1992 when she was president of minor soccer in Exeter. She was instrumental in helping me start the Exeter Fury men’s soccer team. Hennie volunteered to go with me to league meetings which I always appreciated because it was something she wanted to do not because she had to do it. Her willingness to see the team succeed is something I will always remember and when our paths crossed a few times I would make a point to thank her for selfless efforts. I didn’t know Hennie well but I will always remember her fondly. My condolences to her family.

Ken, Kate, Kara, Kelly and Kyle,
I’ m so sorry for your loss. Growing up on Eastern Ave really felt like being raised by a whole family of mothers, and your mom was such a huge part of that. Hennie was always so loving and welcoming — the kind of person whose smile and hugs made everyone feel instantly at home. I’ll always remember her warmth, kindness, and the way she made people feel cared for. Sending you and your family so much love during this heartbreaking time.
Jayne Baker
My sincere condolences to Ken and family
Hennie was one of my favourite teachers at Seaforth Public School. Hennie was my Grade 5 teacher, leader of our Messengers Group plus both you and Hennie assisted Jim Bishop with our Outdoors Club outings (I think this may have been how you and Hennie met) which were always a very fun time. I can think of many instances that Hennie gave me guidance as a teacher and a friend, influenced me as well as impacted my life in special ways that I have always remembered and cherished. Hennie was a very special person.
Thinking of the entire family at this sad time.

Amanda spent many a times at Hennie’s house growing up and she was always so loving to her and gave her many words of wisdom. Hennie loved her children and many others in the neighbourhood. She had the greatest laugh and smile. She will be greatly missed by her family but remember all the good times. She will live in your heart’s for ever

Ken, Kate, Kara, Kelly, Kyle and families,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Hennie. What a treasure of a wife, mom, and grandma, and I’m certain the grief you feel is overwhelming. As a little girl growing up on Eastern Avenue, I always felt her attentiveness and genuine interest in me. Some of my best childhood memories are from spending time at your house and in her care. Hennie cared deeply about children, and it showed. I ran into your parents about 3 or 4 years ago at the Zurich arena and she was so delighted to meet my boys and I loved getting to squeeze her once again. Thinking of you all and praying for peace as you honour the life of a wonderful lady.
Lynn Marie
My dear cousin Ken and family,

I am deeply saddened to hear of Hennie’s passing. I have many memories as a young girl of Hennie coming over for a cup of tea and visiting with my mom, swimming at your pool on Eastern Ave and the many birthday gifts she gave me over the years. Sending condolences to the Hoekstra Farwell family. Jennie was my teacher in grade three at Seaforth Public School. Hennie was fabulous, funny and feminine. A great sounding box! She made you feel welcome and opened up your mind to explore. Hennie did wonderful shadow art and inspired us to go home and work with our shadow to cast the best of our own persons. May Hennie rest and peace and may she share her many blessings in the heavens.

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your wife, mom, grandmother and great grandmother, Hennie. Although I am now a senior citizen, Miss Hoekstra impacted my life during my elementary school days and she remained my favourite teacher that taught me life lessons about friendship, life, and death. When my friend broke her leg at school, she would take homework to her out of town. I would often ask how my friend was doing and Miss Hoekstra taught me the importance of writing a letter to make my friend feel cared for. When we realized that our schoolmate was not coming back to school just yet, Miss Hoekstra invited myself and two other friends, through our families, to come with her once a week to take the homework and to visit our friend in person. During one of our visits we were told by Miss Hoekstra and our friend’s mom that our friend had cancer and would not make it back to school. I did not know what cancer was, nor had I ever had anyone close to me pass away, and Miss Hoekstra helped us to understand what was happening and that it was okay to cry. One day when I came home from school, my mom told me that my friend had passed away. Miss Hoekstra had not been at school that day. Upon her return, she made it clear that anytime we needed to talk, she was there for us. I still have a special letter that my friend wrote me, talking about the flowers shaped like a dog that we had brought and the fun visits. I told my children what a special teacher Miss Hoekstra was to my friend and her family, and to myself and my friends. I have thought of her often over the years, as I taught my own children about caring and compassion. Every letter I wrote to someone special to me reminded me of how lucky I was to have learned so many lessons. She was a teacher that truly cared. How lucky you were to have her as a wife, mom, grandmother, and great grandmother! She was a very special person.

My heart is broken for the Farwell Clan. Hennie was a constant part of my youth; she was wise council, a clever decorator, crafter, and a cheerleader. I still laugh when I think of her insistence of clothing our Barbies before they travelled across the field to my house. She always made children sing for their Halloween treats and she always had space in her home for a visit.
We lost a wonderful person; heaven gained the very best angel.
