COOK: Margaret Ruth (Hardie) of Granton

December 8, 2025 By Haskett Funeral Homes 122 Condolences

COOK: Margaret Ruth (Hardie) of Granton

Ruth passed away suddenly as a result of a fall on Sunday, December 7, 2025 in her 88th year. Beloved wife of the late Clifford Cook (2006). Loving mother of Dave and Margaret, Doug and Kim, John and Cheryl, and Steve and Amy. Proud grandma of Jesse (Caitriona), Kathryn; Brad and Danielle, Jenna and Dillon, Steven and Katie; Madelyn (Anthony), and Grace (Ethan). Special GG of Aiden, Theo, Charlotte, and Emersyn. Dear sister-in-law of Lillus Riddell and Fred Lewis, and Joan Hardie. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Robert and Madeline (Westman) Hardie, parents-in-law William and Irene Cook, brother Pat Hardie, brothers and sisters-in-law; Reta and Harry Hughes, Edith and Harold Hardie, Shirley and Max Bilyea, Fred and Jean Cook, Billy Cook, and Jim Riddell.

Ruth was born and raised in Granton, where she developed the strong work ethic and compassionate spirit that carried her through life. After high school she pursued a nursing career, and not long after met the love of her life, Cliff. Together they built a rich and busy life on the 10th of Biddulph, raising four rambunctious boys and embracing the rhythm of farm life and the friendships formed with neighbours.
Over the years, Ruth and Cliff travelled far and wideโ€”first across Canada and the United States, then to the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, Alaska, Hawaii, Ireland, the Netherlands, and even South Africa.
A devoted member of Granton United Church, Ruth found purpose, faith, and lifelong friendships in its community. Above all, she lived for her family. She was their biggest supporter, their caregiver, the one who kept them in line when needed, and a proud perfectionist in all she did.

Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 223 Main Street, LUCAN on Friday from 4 โ€“ 7 PM, where Ruthโ€™s funeral will be held on Saturday, December 13th at 11 AM. Interment St. Marys Cemetery.

Stream the service live or at your convenience by visiting www.facebook.com/haskettfh

Donations to Villages United Church, Granton or St. Marys Healthcare Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

So sorry to hear about the sudden loss of your MOM. We can see from all the photos what a great family. It is so filled with lots of love and good times. I know the family has been taking excellent care of her since your Dad died. She will be missed this Christmas by all of you. Plus some of the community she was so involved with. She was a VERY SPECIAL LOVING LADY !

Dear Dave, Doug, John, Steve and your loving families.

Your mom would be so proud of the heartfelt tribute given in her honour at her funeral on Saturday. Hardly a dry eye at the funeral home. Your words so eloquently and sincerely described what she meant to you, and in turn, to all those she loved and met. She was an amazing woman.

I am reminded that in raising four rambunctious boys from south-of-the-tracks, she also cared deeply for and spent significant time and energy with the four boisterous boys (Jim, Ron, Rob & Dan) and their parents from north-of-the-tracks. As my brothers have mentioned, Ruth was our second mother.

Summer evenings spent playing kick-the-can after a big meal at your place, while Ruth, Cliff, Mary, and Russ played cards. Hot summer days baling straw and playfully placing each bale in the mow. Did I say HOT! Enjoying a cool dip in the pond at Prospect Hill and possibly an ice cream cone later on. Eagerly getting together to play after each family opened their Christmas presents. And when we grew, … enjoying the odd cold beverage and laughing together. A simple, yet fun-filled life … full of life, laughter, love and a few shenanigans. Good times and fabulous memories.

To the entire Cook Family, so many fond memories of Ruth and her love and care for all. As you think of her, may your hearts be full of the love and care that she so willfully shared.

P.S. We think she and Cliff are winning the euchre tournament in heaven! :)

Love and kind regards, Jim and Julie Brintnell.

Dear Dave and Margaret, Doug and Kim, John and Cheryl, Steve and Amy and your families,

Today we commemorate the loss of a special person, share precious memories and say our final good byes to our dear Aunt Ruth….your much loved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. And it’s still so hard to believe, I thought she would just always be here, just across the road – with her laugher, words of wisdom, advice, encouragement, her love.

And with Christmas soon, I am encouraged that through tears, there will still be joy and laughter as you open stockings and gifts ……because she will be there, big time – the centre of your family. Because as I saw yesterday, everyone of you has a part of her in you! You will feel her warmth, her hugs, see her smiles, hear her laughter. You still have her hopes and dreams for you, you have each other, and best of all you have cherished memories and the gift her love – forever and always! And that is beautiful! We are all so blessed to have had her in our lives.
    Rest in peace Aunt Ruth,
    With heartfelt sympathy,
    Gerald and Brenda

Dave, Doug, John, Steve and your wonderful families. I’m so very saddened for you and everyone that Ruth touched. Ruth was certainly seen as the second Mom to the Brintnell’s. How many times arriving just before dinner, there was always a spot at the table, warmth, smiles and when needed … a few sound words of advice about too much tom foolery. I cried when I heard the news and I know many are too, especially you guys. Your Mom was the best. She will always be in your hearts. Love ya

    Ruthโ€™s family,
Just over 10 years ago Lucan United joined Granton United and we were warmly welcomed by your Mother and Grandma. We had known Ruth in our community but really became acquainted with her with the amalgamation of our churches. We found out that Ruth was the heart of the UCW and Church. She reached out with a loving heart and deep concern for all at our meetings and gatherings. We knew of her love of her family and she always kept us updated on new babies arriving. She was a lovely, smart lady and we will miss her dearly as will you. We all have been blessed.

Uncle Dave, Aunt Margie, and the whole Cook family,

We were so sorry to hear of Ruthโ€™s passing. She was always kind, generous, and you could see how much she loved each one of you. Our yearly Halloween visits were a highlight for us. The kidsโ€™ bags were full before we even left the farmโ€”and she was only our second stop. She made sure to fill us in on what all her grandkids were up to and was so proud of everyone.

Weโ€™re thinking of you all during this difficult time.

Dear Dave, Doug, John, Steve, and families,
We have so many memories of your mom over the years, many of which include her trying to round up her rambunctious boys! She was a true class act and was always kind when we saw her. Even though Dad would say she was on the wrong side of the tracks and she had the wrong colour of tractor, she was a wonderful neighbour to all, and I know she will be missed by the community. Another legend has moved on from Stonehouse Line. Our blessings to you.

Shocked and saddened would be an understatement when we heard the news of Aunt Ruth’s passing. We felt that she was the current day Benjamin Buttons—aging backwards. She was youthful, energetic, stylish and we thought eternal. Aunt Ruth was such a strong link in the extended Cook family chain, keeping us all informed and updated. She was a wonderful Mother to her boys, their wives and children but I was always amazed and grateful for her mothering to Billy. She did it with such grace and joy, and without complaint. Now after a love-filled, faith based, blessed life…. it is time to go HOME. I am sure Uncle Cliff has it decorated in a fitting “Griswold-esque” manner with her favourite Danny Boy song playing in the background. Rest easy Aunt Ruth, you deserve the best ! To the Cook boys, their families & extended families,

Our deepest condolences. Both John & I were shocked by the news. Ruth was so involved & a vital member of our community. I had seen her last on Thursday at the UCW luncheon and John spoke with her at church on Sunday.
She was a force to be reckoned with, but also open to any pleas for advice. I think, the whole village knew they could count on Ruthโ€™s knowledge or help if needed. She genuinely cared about what her neighbours thought and were doing. She will be greatly missed!

Ruth loved her family and took great pride in her grandchildren as they grew into adulthood.

May memories comfort you at this difficult time and throughout the year ahead.
