ALLARDYCE: Annie of Frankenmuth and formerly of Ilderton

Annie (Anne) L. Allardyce, 87, of Frankenmuth, passed away March 7 at The Lutheran Home – Frankenmuth.
Born in 1925 to Donald and May McNaughton on the family farm near London, Ontario, Anne was one of 11 children. She attended a one-room schoolhouse and in 1947 graduated as a registered nurse from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in London. In 1948, she married James R. Allardyce, of Saginaw, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Ilderton, Ontario. They settled in Saginaw, then moved their family to Frankenmuth in 1962.

Anne was licensed to practice nursing in Ontario and Michigan. She worked at Saginaw General Hospital and The Lutheran Home – Frankenmuth, where she retired in 1987. She also was a 35-year participant in the ongoing Harvard Medical School Nurses Health Study, a research effort on women’s health sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. In addition to her career, she enjoyed quilting, tatting, knitting, sewing, canning, tending her roses and baking pies, for which she won awards, including top prize at the county fair as a teenager. Anne thoroughly enjoyed hosting family and friends, whether it was for holiday dinners or dessert and tea. She frequently shared handmade treats and crafts.

Anne was a member of Frankenmuth Professional Nurses and a charter member of the Frankenmuth Women’s Club. She also served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and as co-president of the PTA. She was a member of Frankenmuth United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, co-chairwoman of the craft booth at the annual bazaar and on the board of trustees, of which she was secretary. For 20 years, Anne assisted her husband in his role as secretary of the national 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment World War II Association. In that capacity, they produced quarterly newsletters, helped organize annual reunions and reconnected more than 1,400 82nd Airborne Division wartime paratroopers with their buddies.

She is survived by her three children, Ellen Wolkensperg, of Grand Rapids, Lauri (Don) Linkert, of Midland, and Jim (Nancy) Allardyce, of Grandville; six treasured grandchildren, Jim and Dave (Laura) Wolkensperg, Katie Linkert, and Natalie, James and Jeffrey Allardyce; two brothers, James McNaughton, of London, and John (Katherine) McNaughton, of Ilderton; and one sister, Donelda Bodajla, of Delhi, Ontario; in-laws, Scott McNair and Orene McNaughton, both of Ilderton, Gordon (Carol) Allardyce, of Orchard Lake, and Don (Sue) Allardyce, of Escanaba; and many nieces and nephews. Anne was predeceased by her husband, Jim; two brothers, Donald and Peter McNaughton; and five sisters, Grace Harris, Irene Langford, Mary McKichan, Ruth McKeen and Nora McNair.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2013, at Frankenmuth United Methodist Church, 346 E. Vates, Frankenmuth. The Rev. David Eardley will officiate. Anne’s family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St., on Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. and on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Burial beside her beloved husband, Jim, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Medway Cemetery, Ilderton, Ontario, near the family farm. Afterward, the family will receive visitors at Bethel Presbyterian Church.
