SMITH: Donna (Gilfillan) of Exeter and formerly of Crediton

November 10, 2025 By Haskett Funeral Homes 156 Condolences

SMITH: Donna (Gilfillan) of Exeter and formerly of Crediton

Peacefully with her husband by her side, at the Exeter Villa on Saturday, November 8, 2025 in her 87th year. Beloved wife of Harvey for over 66 years. Loving mother of the late Penny Smith. Dear sister-in-law of Grace Gilfillan. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her siblings Bill Gilfillan, Jean (Jack) Mahar, Grant Gilfillan, Barb (Larry) Regier, and by Harveyโ€™s siblings, Ralph (Veda) Smith, Edward (Shirley) Smith, Leonard (Anne) Smith, and Don (Donna) Smith.

Donna and her soulmate, Harvey, could often be found working or traveling side by side โ€” whether farming, delivering mail, visiting Anna Maeโ€™s, or touching the hearts of children as they bused them to and from school. She was known for her kind and encouraging words, and her loving spirit will be deeply missed.

A private graveside service will be held at the Exeter Cemetery.

Donations to the South Huron Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

    Condolences to you, Harvey. Donnaโ€™s huge smile and laugh always made me so comfortable as a child when we visited or saw her delivering our mail. I always wanted to be as competent a driver as Donna- driving from the middle of the truckโ€™s bench seat and getting the letters out the right side window and having a friendly wave as well! You have many wonderful memories to warm you still, Harvey.

    Harvey & family;

    Our sincere condolences in the loss of your dear Donna. Such a lovely and kind person she was. From when I first met you and Donna in the early 80โ€™s, servicing your cars, I knew you two were a very special and inseparable pair. Even working together on your mail runs. What a wonderful love story. From meeting around the community, watching you play guitar at various musical gigs Harvey, running into you both at several eating establishments and visits at the Villa, Donna was always by your side. These last few years especially, you have been at her side caring for her so well Harvey.
    Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. Rest in peace Donna.

    Dear Harvey,

    Our sincerest condolencesโ€ฆ my husband Craig was one of Donnaโ€˜s kids on the bus, along with his brother and sisters Steve, Jenny, and Rose. I have heard it said many times in the Glavin household what a kind and wonderful woman Donna was and how lucky they were to have had her has a bus driver. As a teacher, I can tell you what an incredible thing it is to start and end your day in the care of someone who treats you the way Donna did for all of her children. For kids who didnโ€™t want to go to school, Iโ€™m sure she made their morning a little brighter. And for the kids who dreaded going home, she must have filled their afternoon with love. I think a school bus driver makes such a huge impact on a childโ€™s day. And from what I have heard about Donna, her love and kindness touched everyone she knew, especially those kids on the bus. We were neighbours on Snider Crescent, and I remember how kind you and Donna were to my children as well. What a wonderful legacy and love to have in this world!

    To every living thing there is a season, and Donna absolutely made the most of her time on this earth! Our sincerest condolences as you say good-bye & mourn the incredible life of your beloved soulmate, Donna. She will leave a huge hole in your heart, but she will remain with you in the wonderful memories you shared together. Donna was such a classy, earth angel, beautiful inside & out, who had a heart of gold. She had the gift to make everyone around her feel so special, happy & welcomed with her sweetest disposition. The two of you were the perfect loving couple who complemented each other & will be forever treasured & never forgotten by so many, both young & old who had the privilege of knowing you both either through your daily mail deliveries, school bus runs, Sunday school, community outings & so much more. Heaven has gained a new star shining brightly above – her earthly health struggles are over, she is now resting in the sweetest peace, reunited with your daughter Penny. Donna (along with Harvey) drove the school busses for my whole Mt. Carmel school years. Pretty sure they drove most of us Ford kids lol

    Later they were both my co workers while we were delivering mail at the Huron Park PO. For over 35 years the delivered mail and smiles to R.R. #1 & 2 Crediton.

    After they retired, I became their mail lady when I changed routes into Exeter. Every time I would see them, her and Harvey would stop and want to ask how I was doing, how the family was doing.

    A wonderful lady I have known since I was 5, I have lasting memories of her red lipstick, vivacious smile and keen sense of humour.

    Donna will be missed.

    Harvey my heart is breaking for you. The loss of such an amazing, caring person and soulmate. I had gotten used to Donna and that beautiful smile being the first person that I would meet when I came in the Villa door to spend time with my Mom. She was like the Good Will Ambassador for the Villa and they could not have had anyone more suited for the job. She always had a warm smile and a greeting for you, whether it was at the door or when you passed her in the hall. She was a true, rare gem and always looking forward to spending time with you Harvey. The two of you have touched so many lives in our community and share a caring and love that was something most people could only dream of having. Donnaโ€™s love for you was endless and you have many amazing years of life memories together to remember her by. Hugs, Tam

    I am so sadden to read about Donna’s passing. She was such a gentle soul, and had that soothing nature that wiped many tears from the faces on her bus, and replaced those tears with smiles. She was able to do the same thing with many adults too, I never left seeing Donna without a smile on my own face. I am so sorry Harvey, knowing just how much you are going to miss Donna. I am sure Penny was waiting with open arms to welcome her Mom home, she has been waiting for her for such a long time.
