Passed away peacefully at Exeter Villa on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 at the age of 87. Fondly remembered by his extended family of over 50 years, Lynn (the late Pete) Ferwerda, Darlene (Jeff) Elliott, Brady (Sandra) Van Praet, and Sandra (Irv) Ford and their kids, Deanna and Dave Dalrymple, Cheyenne and Pete Broeders; Megan and Jesse Mason, Jesse and Tammy Elliott; Tori and Allen Geroge, Paige and Ryan Gauthier, Tracy and Steve Reed, Renee and the late Joe Klienjan, and Vicki and Brent Lovelace, and their many grandkids. Eugene will be greatly missed by his extended family and friends. Predeceased by his sister Norine Hales, his parents Bill and Mazy Hales, longtime friend and neighbour Tom Elliot, and friends Feby and Remi Van Praet and their son Christopher Van Praet.
A gifted craftsman, Eugene found joy in working with his hands. Carefully crafted wood projects filled his home and garden. He tended to his garden with the same care, delighting in the simple beauty of flowers and the butterflies that always seemed to find their way to him.
He leaves behind a legacy of things made and moments cherished. A reminder that beauty can be created in both wood and life, and love can be found in the small, quiet details.
Special thanks to the Exeter Villa for the great care over the past 2 years, as well as the South Huron Hospital, Grand Bend Health Centre and Haskett Funeral Home.
Cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Pinery Cemetery, Grand Bend.
Donations to Exeter Villa Activation Fund in Eugeneโs memory would be appreciated by the family.
