Our family in Canada was always special for me. Far away, interesting and very exciting when you are young. The 3 brothers and 1 sister of my dad lived there after the war 1940-1945.
The last time I saw them all was in 1999 when I visited them in Canada. We had a beautiful day in the house of ome Piet and tante Trees, ome Marinus and tante Nellie, ome Gerard and tante Tonnie and had a real “Dutch” meal of bread like “krentenbollen and witte broodjes” and I’m not sure anymore but I think they also had “hagelslag” and real Dutch service. Aunt Trees took very good care of us.
We were there with our German friends and Mary – the German friend – recognized their house because they had a little “molentje” windmill in their garden. Uncle Peter was I think the youngest of the family and the last living member of the brothers and sister of my dad. We will remember him as a very nice person. I send aunt Trees and her children my sincere sympathy on the passing of her husband and their lovely father.
Adrie and Tineke Kleij-van den Boomen
