To the Thiel Family,
I am saddened to hear of the passing of a beautiful soul. Your Mom, Grandmother and Great Grandmother was a beautiful person. I will always remember our phone calls that we would have after my retirement from the bank. We would talk for at least an hour just catching up on all the local news and I would listen to her stories of her growing up years. Always a pleasure to listen to. Know that our thoughts and prayers will be with you during this difficult time.

Just last week I watched an old VCR tape of “Zurich, Ontario 1948” and I thought of Alice.
I only recognized a few of the people, but I bet she would have known many people on the tape.
She was a remarkable and knowledgeable lady.

Alice was a very kind friend of mine……my wife and I were honoured to be asked to attend her 100th birthday….. her mind was as sharp as a razor……her love of the Zurich community was legend……
always interested in our family……she will long be remembered…..a more dedicated and lovely lady, she will be missed. I was a lucky person to be given the same birthdate,,,,,,,,,,,,God bless her…..rest in the quietness and peace Alice (so well deserved).

Bill, especially, enjoyed many visits with Alice over the years including those in the garage during Covid. She was set up there with chairs, her newspaper, and some produce from her garden or freezer to offer us in exchange for the zucchini bread or cookies we took, which she appreciated. She was full of gratitude always.
In organizing our own family photos or stories, we always set aside photos of people we didn’t know or questions we needed to ask so Alice could help us – and she always could.
She was related to Bill through the Raders and was an invaluable source of family history, who will be sorely missed.

To Aunt Alice’s Family,
What a remarkable woman we have lost! She was always full of stories and historic information. Her memory was absolutely unbelievable for her age. We enjoyed our last visit with her on her birthday weekend and she was clearly loving seeing everyone who stopped by. Phil well remembers meeting her at the mail box when he was a kid and she always had time to talk to him. When a group of us from church stopped in to sing some carols the week before Christmas, she was delighted and even sang along. Aunt Alice will certainly be missed in our family and in the community!

I was just thinking of her the other as I was passing by and had hoped to stop by again to have one of those great chats with her. What a lady Grandma Alice was…between her bear hugs, thoughtful birthday cards to Sebastian who shared the same birthday month only days apart, celebrating her birthday dinners at Hessenland where we took our picture with Grandma Alice and received “said” bear hugs and being teased from Frank and his comrads- she took everything in stride! We even recall her calling the Inn one random day looking for a golden bracelet she thought may have been lost at Hessenland which we actually found in the parking lot a couple of months earlier. We held on to this bracelet because it looked precious with quite a few “years” behind it. When she heard we had it, her voice trembled with relief and proceeded to tell me it was a gift that was given to her when she was a flower girl for a relative…at 105 years of age you can only imagine how old this bracelet was. So many more stories we can share that springs a smile or a chuckle…Grandma Alice…you’re one for the books- may you rest in peace knowing you have left your mark not only in the heart of Zurich but in ours.

So sorry for your loss. She will be dearly missed as a neighbour. I will definitely miss her phone calls when the hydro is off. She would call just to make sure she wasn’t the only one in the area. Rest in peace Alice.
