To the entire family my sincerest sympathy. It was a shock when I heard the news. Steve was one of my very favourite teachers in spite of the fact I hated chemistry. He loved his work and kept us all engaged in class. He always included us in news of his family and I remember the births of Martha and David as the proud Dad came to class. Steve loved his sports and kept our class up to date on all the stats. In later years he became such a good friend on the golf course and at the curling club. I am so sorry for all of you at this sudden loss. He will certainly be remembered fondly by many and I am grateful for having known him all these years.

We knew Steve from Seniors Golf and if ever there was someone with the right attitude it was Steve. His motto was “Golf should be fun” and that was how he played. He will be saddly missed.

Steve was like a second father to me and “Mr. Hook” was one of my favourite teachers (“Are you watching?!”). I spent many hours at the Hook household – such a welcoming place to be and 5 great years at SDHS with Mr. Hook holding vigil in the chemistry room. Steve was a great story teller – whether in the class room or not. The best part was when he grinned in telling the funny parts of his story – like we were sharing an inside joke… It doesn&&single&&t see possible that you&&single&&re gone. Rest in peace Steve. You will always be in our hearts.

I will always remember him teaching metric units, the periodic table, and what happens to gas molecules when they are heated up. His “round tuit” and his homemade Christmas decorations! Just a little more than 48 years ago, our Grade 11 class at S.D.H.S. walked into Mr. Hook&&single&&s Chemistry class – most of us were not expecting to enjoy Chemistry, let alone love it! Teacher&&single&&s really do leave an unforgettable impression on their students! My deepest sympathy to Fran and the whole family, as well as to his closest friends and colleagues. He will be truly missed.

It is sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Hook. Such an outstanding teacher! You couldn&&single&&t help but enjoy Mr. Hook&&single&&s chemistry class. The zest he put into his teaching was unmatched. I am proud to say I try I to capture some of Mr. Hook&&single&&s style to teach my own students today.
Boron, Iron, Masgnesium, Bunsen Burners and … WHY spend 10 bucks on a little bottle of gas line antifreeze when you can buy a gallon of methyl hydrate from Canadian Tire for the same money and it is exactly the same thing! I still remember Mr. Hook&&single&&s methyl hydrate story at the beginning of every winter.
What good memories! Mr. Hook has left a great legacy. He will be missed. Our sympathies to Fran and the entire family. You all can be very proud of the life of Mr. Hook.

There it tells us that &&single&&there is going to be resurrection.&&single&& (Acts 24:15) This promise can provide you a real hope of being reunited with him. (John 5:28, 29)

Please accept my deepest condolences. Martha, your dad was a great man. Initially, I didn&&single&&t know whether to fear or love him but I quickly chose the latter. He truly modeled what it means to be a great teacher and those characteristics still influence my work to this day. Thinking of his grinning face right now makes me smile :)

Stephen and I were part of the Beattie Ave. group of kids – growing up and attending Lady Beck Public and Sir Adam Beck Secondary Schools together. After graduation, we lost touch but years later when Beck had a reunion or a Singing Auditorium, we [and Frances] met once again. The occasional emails kept this friendship alive and now reading the condolences, I am thrilled to read the tributes from his former students. What an amazing person and what a difference he made to so many. Sincere condolences to Stephen&&single&&s family and friends.

Steve was a wonderful person and a great teacher and Federation member of OSSTF. I had the pleasure of working with Steve on our district council of OSSTF representing the secondary teachers of Huron county. He was dedicated and had a wit and charm that was uniquely Steve ! We had great fun in that organization and always found time to socialize as well as tend to the task at hand. My condolences to the family.

My sincere sympathy to you all at this sad and difficult time. “Mr. Hook” made a lasting impression on SDHS students whether we were in his classroom, or just out in the hall. His sense of humour, kind smile, and passion for teaching made our days at SDHS brighter. Even those of us lacking a proficiency for scientific thought somehow enjoyed his classes, and that&&single&&s saying a lot.
Recently I have enjoyed chats with him on the street. I could tell that he was loving retirement, especially the time spent with his family. His already big smile, grew even bigger when he spoke of his grandchildren.

“Mr. Hook” as I will always feel inclined to call him, was a wonderful, enthusiastic teacher and person. Even after all of these years, I have vivid memories of him, both at SDHS (Science and “home room” too) and in the years after. I thought I loved chemistry in high school but when I got to University I realized I loved the way “Mr. Hook” taught chemistry. Who can forget “Now this will really impress them at the dinner table?”

I often speak of his opening-day lecture in which he performed various marvels and feats, following each by “That&&single&&s chemistry!”, when I speak to my team about engagement, and my own children when trying to help them with their chemistry.
