Posted By Haskett Funeral Homes On January 15, 2026 @ 4:40 PM In Exeter,Obituary | 135 Comments

STEFFENS: Herman of Exeter

Passed away peacefully with family by his side at Exeter Villa on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 in his 88th year. Beloved husband of Joanne (Kimmann) Steffens for 61 years. Cherished dad of Dinette and Joe Stephens, Miriam Steffens and Bob Deane, Cindy and Shayne Brizzard, Margie and Jason Gnay, Derrick and Brandi Leenders, and Trevor Leenders and Lindsay Sanders. Proud Opa of Jake (Nicole), Jeff (Meg), Grace (Kay), Hannah; Cole (Emma), Jordan (Mel), Emily (Taylor), Marley; Abby (Kole), Bailey, Michael; Briar, Keegan; Owen (Hunter), Hudson, and Beckett and great-Opa of Lily, Mick, Nel, Norah, Will, and Kenna. Dear brother of Gerard and Gerrie Steffens and brother-in-law of Leidy Steffens of The Netherlands. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews of The Netherlands. Predeceased by parents Herman and Maria Steffens and his brothers Hennie (Leida), and Frans and great-grandson Kayce.

Herman came to Alberta from Holland in the early 1960s, planting the first seeds of the life he would build in Canada. He later returned home to marry the love of his life, and just ten days after their wedding, the two immigrated together in 1965 to begin their future side by side. Herman worked for a local farmer for one year before purchasing a farm of their own, where they raised their family and built a life rooted in hard work, faith, and community. A proud farmer through and through, Herman was actively involved in the Lucan Biddulph community, serving in local politics and volunteering with numerous organizations. He enjoyed curling and coaching soccer, always finding time to give back. Faith was central to Herman’s life, and he was deeply involved with the Knights of Columbus, where his commitment and service reflected the values he lived by every day.

Special thank you to the staff at Huron View and the Exeter Villa for the care and compassion provided to Herman.

Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 456 Main Street South, EXETER on Tuesday, January 20th from 5 – 7 PM.

Herman’s Funeral Mass will be held at Precious Blood Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 21st at 11 AM. Interment Exeter Cemetery.

A recording of Herman’s Funeral Mass will be available on Wednesday afternoon by visiting www.facebook.com/haskettfh

Donations to the Huntington Society of Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

Condolence from Caroline (Koricina) Rathwell on January 24th, 2026 9:33 AM

Dear Steffens family,

Herman was such a kindhearted and funny man. I still fondly remember him playing a trick on me when I was a child—he “stole” my nose with his thumb trick. It’s a memory I’ve shared with my own children, and one that still makes us giggle.

May you keep all of your wonderful memories of him close to your hearts during this difficult time.

With heartfelt sympathy,
Caroline (Koricina) Rathwell
