SMITH: Samuel of Lucan

Posted By Haskett Funeral Homes On September 15, 2023 @ 2:58 PM In Lucan,Obituary | 81 Comments

SMITH: Samuel of Lucan

Samuel died suddenly on September 13, 2023. He entered this world as a beautiful, spirited, wide-eyed baby. He spent his first five years in Nova Scotia where he loved to read, play, and go to the beach with his dad. He moved to Lucan, Ontario at age 6. As any young person, he was energetic, full of hope and potential, and was adored by his family. He loved his friends and was always seeking acceptance and belonging, often to a fault. He grew to be a capable musician, playing piano and guitar with ease. He played hockey, football, and soccer and then, at age 12 fell in love with the sport of lacrosse. The game was his passion, not only because of the sport but because of the sense of community that was created by coaches, specifically Ron Elijah and the London Jr. B team. Samuel was at home and at peace when he had a stick in his hand.

Unfortunately, Samuel began to struggle with addiction and mental illness at a very young age and though we don’t want this to define him, it has been a reality of his journey that we cannot ignore. Despite multiple attempts at sobriety, including a 22-month period of sobriety supported by the community he found at the Pine River Institute, he continued to fight addiction. His battle with addiction and mental illness pushed many people away from him, especially over the last two years and he found himself struggling deeply with loneliness. He faced many difficulties. Every day was a struggle.

Recently Samuel made a commitment to rebuild his relationship with his family. He soaked up stories from his Grandad and expressed after a recent visit how much “I love to hear Grandad laugh”. He learned to sew pajamas with his Grandma and they developed such a special relationship he called her his “best friend”. This past year he enjoyed visits, many laughs, and competitive games of crokinole with his Grammy, Nappy, Uncle Tony, and cousin Annah from Nova Scotia. When feeling well, he went to the gym with his mom or tried (rather poorly) to take up running with her. Every day he told her he loved her and flooded her DM with silly videos to make her laugh. He enjoyed discussing all things related to food with his dad and watching shows together. They shared the same humour, laughing with and at each other often. He took pleasure in driving his siblings crazy but always had a spunky, “Hey, girly pop!”  greeting for his sister and was proud to see his little brother embrace lacrosse as he did.  Samuel worked hard to connect and repair and we know he just wanted to feel love. We enjoyed a family dinner together on Sunday and had been in touch every day until he died. Despite it all, addiction won the battle but it did not win over our love for each other.

Samuel is survived by his parents, Jana Bayer-Smith and Howard Smith, his siblings Kaija and Cohen, his maternal grandparents, Ron and Barb Bayer, all of Lucan, Ontario, his paternal grandparents Howie and Sharon Smith of Ostrea Lake, Nova Scotia, his uncle Tony Smith and cousins Austin and Annah Smith of Ostrea Lake, Nova Scotia. He is predeceased by his uncle, David Bayer, who,  if there is a Creator, is learning how to play lacrosse right now with his nephew.

Special thanks to all those who reached in to help Samuel and his family over the last 8 years. Samuel’s journey has ended and we will miss him dearly but our relationship with him will never end. He is loved, to the moon and back, by us all.

Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 223 Main Street, LUCAN on Friday, September 22nd from 5 – 8 PM. Registration is appreciated. Please click “Register Now” below to register.

Family and friends are welcome to join for a campfire and time for sharing stories of Samuel’s life on Saturday, September 23rd at Wayne and Karen Hodgin’s farm, 33721 Coursey Line, Lucan (follow the laneway to the bush behind the sheds) from 3 – 6 PM with words of remembrance at 5 PM. Please bring a chair with you.

Donations in memory of Samuel can be made to the Pine River Institute in Shelburne, Ontario, or Stratford/Perth Shelterlink.

Condolence from Seamus Scime on September 15th, 2023 9:15 PM

Sam and I met in Algonquin Park. He was coming back to the OLE for a few weeks and I was going out there from the school. That week we made ourselves a good friendship which we kept together despite the distance and not being able to see eachother much. He was such a charming guy haha, that whole week out there he just resonated good vibes.

Later when Sam lived in Kingston we got to hang out a decent bit. We never really did anything special we actually just sat around talking for hours but that itself was special. Sam was so kind and welcoming, it was refreshing to go see him because he just cared. All the time I spent with him there in Kingston I felt cared for which was so beautiful. He just truely cared about me and was interested in me which is so pure and rare I think. He always was so happy and glad and I loved hanging out with him. He was so honest too he would talk about anything. We talked about family a lot during that time and he always would talk about how he wanted to make things right with his family and repair and spend time and just have that family love. I always really hoped that would happen because he so genuinely wanted it.

From those days in Kingston we never saw eachother again but we kept up texting and calling a bit. We were gonna go tree plant together this summer which would have been cool but its a tough jump to get up north with the gear and do it. Thinking now though I’m glad we didnt because I’m happy he spent that time at home in Lucan with you guys. I think he got that family time, what he always said he wanted back in Kingston and that makes me really happy to know. He sent me a photo one day of the dinner table looking out on the back yard. It looked so peaceful. We talked 4 days ago, he told me about his place in Stratford and he seemed glad about it. Him, Rochana and I were gonna hang out over the holidays when we all could. Sitting here now I wish we still could, I’d love to be around his cheer and charm again.

Seamus

Samuel was the first person that I saw when we brought Maggie to Pine River for our initial intake meeting. He was sitting beside one of the portables reading a book and looked up at us a smiled. He looked so happy and it made me feel that it was a good place and that Maggie would be perfectly ok. I remember meeting you and Howie at our parent intensive and how I immediately felt such a connection to you. The way you spoke about Samuel, your love for him and how you helped him agree to find help was incredible. His story broke my heart. I have thought of Samuel so much over the years and always hoped that he reconnected with you all. I was so happy to read that he had ❤️.

Sending Sam’s family my sincerest love and condolences…Sam will be deeply missed.

Condolence from Carrie on September 22nd, 2023 12:22 AM

My heart goes out to Sam’s family. Such a beautiful tribute written with authenticity, bravery and courage. What a wonderful light that will now continue to shine from above. I will never forget the first time I had the pleasure to meet Sam. I had come to PRI for a tour with my son Mason. It was a difficult day for both Mason and me. Sam was our PRI advocate and tour guide. What an incredible, well spoken and lovely young man he was. He was welcoming, informative, reassuring, patient and had such beautiful energy. He inspired me and gave me so much hope. Sam easily connected with my son Mason, who also loved and played the many sports Sam did. My son made one of the most life changing decisions to attend PRI as a result of Sam. I will forever be grateful to Sam for the difference he made to our family. Rest in peace Sam. Our deepest sympathies to the family. ❤️

Condolence from Steve Stewart on September 22nd, 2023 12:16 PM

I was thrilled to meet Sam eight years ago and had the pleasure of sharing the summer with him. He was a quiet leader, a talented athlete and a generous coach – stringing lacrosse sticks and helping friends learn the game he loved. He had a captivating smile and a kind heart. I had the opportunity to reconnect on a drive to Algonquin with him a couple of years ago and hoped he could overcome his struggles. I enjoyed every minute I shared with Sam and I am so very sorry for your loss.
