Roy passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at AgeCare Long Term Care Home, Parkhill, Ontario after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Much loved husband of Carol (McIntosh) Small for 59 years. Dearest father of Bryan and Kelly Small of Delaware, Jeffrey and Oriana Small of Mississauga, and Heather and Kirk VanWill of Coldstream. Cherished grandfather of Cole and Emily Small, Aidan and Noah Small, and Avery and Ainsley VanWill. Brother of Fern McLean of Conn, Mildred Francis and Jim Stewart of Mount Forest, Ruth and Terry Kerr of Guelph and Glen Small of Clifford. Brother-in-law of Marjorie Kennedy of Victoria, B.C, Betty Small of Harriston, Margaret and Bob Calvert of Kitchener, Ron and Louise McIntosh of Ayton, Lyle and Leigh McIntosh of Clifford and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents, Elvet and Myrtle (Hellyer) Small, his siblings and in-laws, Irene and Gordon Millson, Keith Small, Ross Small, Lorne and Jennifer Small, Robert McLean, Leonard Francis, Lorna Small, Bonnie Small and Heather Small; also Carol’s parents, Elmer and Ann (Calvert) McIntosh, and brother, Thomas McIntosh.
Roy grew up on his parents’ farms in Arthur Township, Wellington County, graduated from 67A OAC, University of Guelph where he won awards. On July 22, 1967, he married the love of his life, Carol, and they lived in Lambeth. After graduation, he worked in the agricultural industry. Purchasing Maple Hurst Farm near Denfield in 1971, Roy and Carol moved to their new home in 1972. Roy operated a swine farrow-to-finish business, and in retirement, he enjoyed the challenge of refurbishing and building furniture. Roy served his community by being Chair of the Middlesex County Pork Producers, Poplar Hill Park Board, Lobo Mutual Insurance Company, Ilderton Fair Swine and Woodworking Committees, and various offices in Vanneck United Church. In retirement, Roy and Carol travelled across Canada and to many countries. Often the trips had a familiar theme of exploring ancestral homes and meeting long-lost cousins.
As always with Roy, his family came first and then the farm – his loves.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Age Care Home for the loving care that Roy received.
