ROBILLIARD: Robert “Bob” of Exeter

Bob Robilliard passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on Dec 14, 2025. Survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandy Robilliard (Gibson), children Dave (Jessica McKay) Robilliard and Erin (Isaac) Moore.  Much loved Grandpa Bob to Asher and Silas Moore. Bob is also survived by mother-in-law Audrey Gibson of Exeter and sisters-in-law Barb Hollingshead of Kamloops, JoAnn Malysh of Richmond, Connie (Gerry) Robilliard of London and brother-in-law Jim Gibson of Collingwood. Predeceased by parents Earl and Jean Robilliard as well as brothers Henry Edwin (Ted) and Gerry. Also predeceased by father-in-law Bruce Gibson and sister-in-law Debbie Gibson.

Bob was a proud EOA (East of Adelaide) boy, born and raised in London, ON.  After graduating from The University of Western Ontario, Bob taught music in Toronto for 4 years and in Napanee for 8 years before landing in Exeter and building the music program at South Huron District High School. Bob taught at SHDHS for 20 years before his retirement in 2007. In addition to teaching music, Bob also coached volleyball and was staff supervisor for Students’ Council for many years. Bob is fondly remembered by countless students – he considered himself fortunate to keep in touch with so many of them over the years. In retirement, Bob enjoyed driving for HMP, playing golf & cards with friends, and playing with his N-scale train layout – the largest in Exeter!

Special family memories include summers on Lake Couchiching at National Music Camp, baseball trips, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame adventures, family cottage rentals and attending countless concerts and sporting events in support of his kids and grandkids.

The family is deeply appreciative of the healthcare workers at London Health Sciences cancer clinic, Dr. Jadd, the wonderful staff and volunteers at Jessica’s House Hospice and everyone who has reached out, visited, and sent messages of support.

Visitation will be held at the Haskett Funeral Home, 456 Main Street South, Exeter on Sunday, December 21st from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Bob’s memorial service will be held at the Exeter United Church, 42 James Street, Exeter on Monday, December 22nd at 11 AM with Rev. Paul Ross and Pastor Paul Vollick officiating. Stream the service live or at your convenience by visiting https://www.facebook.com/ExeterUC.  A reception celebrating Bob’s life will follow the memorial service and will be held at the Haskett Funeral Home on Monday from 12 – 3 PM. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at the Oakland Cemetery, Delaware at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Jessica’s House Hospice or the Terry Fox Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

Condolence from Karen L Brown on December 15th, 2025 12:20 PM

Sandy, Erin, Isaac, David and Jessica,

My deepest condolences to all of you. Bob was someone I respected deeply for many years, and his presence, character and impact will never be forgotten. When my older daughter was in senior band, Bob invited me to chaperone the first of what would be many band trips over the years with Bob, and later, Isaac. The band was so large that it required a large bus and a much smaller bus to transport the students. The junior musicians were assigned to the smaller bus. At the end of the trip, I was given a thank you card from the students. True to Bob’s sense of humour, the junior musicians weren’t permitted to sign the main card. They had to sign a piece of paper that was taped to the main card. His name will be remembered as such a blessing to so many.

Hugs to all,

Condolence from Diane and Joe Darling on December 15th, 2025 12:32 PM

Sandy, Dave, Erin and family – our sympathy goes out to all of you on the passing of a wonderful man. We have so many great memories of Bob at the high school concerts over the years and at our parent/teacher interviews…some of which were more interesting than others! As I told Bob when I saw him at the golf tournament, he was one of the things our three kids agreed on, he was one of their favourite, if not the favourite teacher. Hugs to all

Condolence from Cheryl Freiter on December 15th, 2025 12:34 PM

Deepest sympathy to the entire Robilliard family. My fondest memories of Bob were from the local grocery store and the tons of wisdom he shared with me on his weekly grocery trip!!! You will be missed by many Bob. Rest easy now!!!!

Condolence from Tracy McLennan on December 15th, 2025 12:35 PM

Sandy, Erin, Dave, and families,

Working with Bob at SHDHS for almost 10 years made my time there truly memorable. He had a unique presence, characterized by his gruff exterior that couldn’t hide a truly kind interior. His deep love for music and his students was evident daily, a legacy that still lives on in the music room. You can see the names of countless former “Panthers” written on the walls, a testament to his impact. The annual Christmas assembly has never felt the same since we lost his spirited Bruce Springsteen cover of “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town.” Bob’s wonderful sense of humor and his unique presence in this world will be deeply missed. My thoughts are with you all. I hope the many memories of your time together bring you peace, and may the love and support of your family and friends wrap around you to bring comfort during this difficult time.

Condolence from Dan Wales on December 15th, 2025 12:35 PM

Words alone cannot express the impact Bob had to his students, co workers and friends. Gifted with the ability to connect with students like few teachers do. Even after leaving teaching to “relax”, he rarely did. His legacy lives on through his wife, David, Erin and those of us who were not only students but later became friends. Always ready to listen and never judge, he remains even in passing one of my favourite people.
I will miss our calls and dinners at Kelsey’s.

Until tomorrow Bob

Condolence from Ken MacPherson on December 15th, 2025 12:51 PM

Bob was a big influence on younger me. He helped me find direction when I had none, making me be a better human and a better musician. His weird sense of humour matched mine so well and I loved his big laugh.
Condolences to family and friends who loved him, and to the students (like me) who learned from his kindness and wisdom.
I will miss him dearly.

So sorry to hear about Mr. Robilliard’s passing. He was an exceptional teacher and mentor. I will always remember him flipping me a toonie after morning band practice so I could go and get him and myself a giant cookie from the cafeteria. He was always there to listen and offer advice whenever I needed it.
He will be missed.

Condolence from Brad & Cathy Gregus on December 15th, 2025 5:31 PM

Seldom does someone move to your town that makes as significant an impact as does a Bob Robilliard. In 1987 Principal Bruce Shaw provided Mr Robilliard with the opportunity and challenge to take over a school music program that had little more to offer than a few old dented instruments to start off with, and with a lot of hard work and dedication, Bob built up a program that included several bands and orchestras operating all at the same time. Bands and orchestras that were award winning and the envy of the whole province……Even to the point, that Gr 12 & 13 young men aspired to belong to because Bob had created a culture that elevated the school bands as the ‘cool-thing’ to do…..What Mr Robilliard built and accomplished here has many similarities to the main points offered in the movie, “Mr Holland’s Opus”. ……Well done Bob…..well done !

Hey always was a hard ass , with a heart of gold

Condolence from Meghan O’Rourke on December 15th, 2025 6:02 PM

Where do I begin when trying to express the impact Mr. Robilliard had on my life? He was more than a music teacher. He taught us the value of teamwork, the importance of working hard toward our goals, and how to support one another and celebrate each other’s successes. Of course, all of these lessons were delivered with his unmistakable sarcasm.

He inspired generations of students, many of whom went on to become teachers themselves. In that music room, he created a space where students felt connected, where we learned not only music but also built lifelong friendships I am deeply grateful for.

I will never forget the familiar heavy sigh he gave me as I walked into class, likely knowing I said I had practiced when I hadn’t. Nor will I forget the countless band trips, being stuck on the bus watching Die Hard or listening to him enthusiastically recount Seinfeld episodes because he loved them so much.

Mr. Robilliard, thank you. Thank you for being an incredible mentor, not only during my high school years but long after. You were truly one of a kind, and I am honoured to have called you my teacher.

To his incredible family. I send my heartfelt condolences, and I’m thinking of you at this time of grief. Be gentle with yourselves during this time and know every emotion you feel is valid.

My condolences to Sandy, Dave, Erin & family as well as the entire SHDHS music community.

Condolence from Dale Ducharme on December 15th, 2025 8:26 PM

Mr. Robilliard was a generous, thoughtful, caring person who really went the extra mile. Whenever I watch Mr Hollands Opus I always think about him. Thanks for making me a better me. Condolences to the whole family.

Condolence from Steph Pearson on December 15th, 2025 9:17 PM

Mr Robilliard was always quick with a joke (likely about Alf or Cheers) or ‘passing the beer nuts’. He always knew when something was off and ‘checked in’ in the most thoughtful way. He was a talented educator and I am the teacher I am today because of his role modelling of gentle nudging (and more kind hearted teasing ). My heart breaks for the whole Robilliard clan and for a world without Sir.

Condolence from Kim Mckay on December 15th, 2025 9:26 PM

My deepest condolences in the loss of Bob. I will miss our Tuesday morning fist bumps. He always had the best sense of humour.

Condolence from Kristen Brekelmans on December 15th, 2025 9:40 PM

I was a straight A student all through high school. When I was in OAC my grandmother passed away very tragically, and I struggled for most of the year. After a particularly poor final exam, playing the trumpet, Mr. Robilliard gave me an A. When I asked him why he said “That’s what you would have gotten anyway.” After other teachers failed me and kicked me out of their classes, Mr. Robilliard gave me an A. That act of kindness made me want to be a teacher, and I am so very sorry for your loss, he was a truly wonderful man, and I know he will be dearly missed.

Condolence from Kendra Craig on December 15th, 2025 9:44 PM

Sympathies to the entire family on the passing of such a wonderful, intelligent and funny man. I always loved joking with him and sharing a laugh. He will be missed.

I had the privilege of getting to know Mr. Robilliard through the girls’ volleyball team. He was a competitive and dedicated coach who gave generously of his time, bringing energy, humour, and enthusiasm to the team. My thoughts are with his family.

Condolence from Stephanie Erb on December 16th, 2025 12:19 AM

Dear Erin, Dave, Sandy, and family,

My heart hurts for each of you.

My first memories of your dad were at ZPS, when he brought the band around to perform. A favourite babysitter was among his students, and man, did I look forward to getting to have the kind of fun it appeared she and the older cool kids were having, once I got to high school. I’m not sure I ever qualified as one of the cool kids, but if it weren’t for your dad, there are few formative experiences I certainly wouldn’t have enjoyed. He opened up the worldview of small-town students by creating opportunities for us to get out of our bubble. Some kids had sports, but for me it was your dad’s guidance in band that taught the importance of doing my part to prop up the team, and the value of sticking around to support my peers’ performances to the end. Mediocrity wasn’t good enough. His brand of sarcasm prodded us to be better.

Through the passing of years, his formative lessons are still with me, and still inform how I show up in the world. I’m barely a drop in the ocean of impact he’s made. Little bits of his legacy will live on in each of us whose lives he’s touched, and most of all, through each of you. I hope that knowledge brings you comfort as you transition from loving him in this life to honouring his memory.

Condolence from Mark Heimrich on December 16th, 2025 4:01 AM

Sandy, Dave & Jessica, Erin & Isaac & family;

Our most sincere condolences in your loss. I always enjoyed my interactions with Bob over the years. I also really enjoyed not only his tremendous talent as a musician, but his very unique and entertaining sense of humour. It was such a privilege to watch ( and listen to ) him lead numerous high school band concerts and other community events over the years. It was even more enjoyable to witness his connection with his students. Bob truly had a mutual respect for and special relationship with all of his students. He not only shared his gifts through his career, but successfully shared his talents and love of music with his family as well. So nice to see. On a personal note, Bob often reminded me of my own late Father, Ron Heimrich. My Dad also shared that same love of music and passed it on to his students and family. Our community has lost a real gem.
My Mom, Marilyn Heimrich, wishes to pass on her sympathy to you as well.
You all remain in our thoughts and prayers at this time.

Mark & Julie Heimrich, Sarah, Scott & Spencer and Marilyn Heimrich.

I studied at the Faculty of Music at the same time as Rob and admired his skill as an oboist. He and I ended up teaching high school music at different ends of the province and I lost touch with him. I’m glad that he had a successful career and, more importantly, earned the respect and appreciation of his students, and the love of his extended family.

I offer my sincere condolences to Rob’s family and friends.

Condolence from Russ Watson on December 16th, 2025 11:01 AM

My friend lived a rich full life that enriched the lives of those around him with his caring and unselfish determination to do what was best for them. In my life he has no equal as a mentor, teacher and friend. I miss him terribly but he gave all of us an example of how to live a good life. And if he heard me say these things he would deflect the accolades onto others. Be at peace my friend.

Love and hugs to Sandy, you have always been his quiet and unwavering source of strength and support, and to Dave, Erin and their families of whom his pride knew no bounds.

He is the favourite for many generations of his students, myself included. It was such a privilege to be taught by him, not just music but a lot about life. He saved a lot of kids by being his heart centered, hilarious, frank and warm self.
We’re all so fortunate to have had him as something of a dad/Mr. Holland to add magic to our lives. His positive impact is endless.

May your memories together bring some comfort in this time. Sending you all warmth and love.

Condolence from Ben Martin on December 16th, 2025 12:29 PM

I’m reposting this from my music school’s Facebook page. Here are 4 ways Mr. Robilliard impacted the school we are today…

1. LIGHTING A SPARK: In our school, band was the place to be. We loved making music together and at least 3 people from my grade ended up being full-time music teachers. This was directly related to Mr. Robilliard making music come alive.

2. COMMUNITY: Aside from the great music, people enjoyed being in band because it was a fun, supportive community. Mr. Robilliard’s care for his students was very evident, and we built a tight community through rehearsals, concerts and camps we went to together.

3. REPERTOIRE: A lot of the music I know and love today, and a lot of my musical sensibilities, were influenced by our great repertoire; Stevie Wonder, Blues Brothers, Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, along with some jazz standards and classical.

4. LIFE LESSONS: Mr. Robilliard taught more than just music. One of my first lessons was just a week or two into grade 9, when I presumptively showed up at intermediate band because I’d heard he sometimes lets under-agers into the bands. He told me to go home; I had to earn it. The next year I was invited into the senior bands under-age… after earning it.

I thank God for great music teachers and hope I can continue passing it on! To Sir!

Condolence from Jessica Baynham on December 16th, 2025 12:54 PM

My condolences to all of Bob’s loved ones. Following suit with many of his former students I was also saddened to hear of Mr. Robilliard’s passing.

I had the opportunity to have Bob as my Grade 10 music teacher. Like many former students I have fond memories within the music room mostly having to do with his dry sense of humor and wisdom. I was not at all musically gifted rather I simply followed suit with my friends and took the class for the required arts credit. Many of those mornings started with a head nod, a faint smirk and a “Good Morning, Sir!” Much to my dismay although never being musically talented. Bob saw through my doubt/nerves and encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, to dig deep and embrace the challenge. Beyond being my teacher that year Bob helped instill confidence, work ethic, and shared his wisdom and kindness.

Bob had the gift of meeting students exactly where they were at while still holding them accountable to rise to meet any occasion. Much to my surprise as musically challenged as I was the music room became a place of warmth, laughter and a safe place to land for many due to the open-door policy Bob had for his students.

Years later I remain thankful for the opportunity to have an educator like Bob. I hope in the days to come the many years of love and memories bring peace to your sad hearts. I will be thinking of you as you take time to reflect and celebrate the special man that Bob was to many.

Rest peacefully “Sir”

Condolence from Rachelle Hill on December 16th, 2025 1:54 PM

My sincere condolences to you all.

Mr. Robillard will always hold a special place in my heart. First as a volleyball coach, second as a teacher and thirdly as a mentor. He encouraged me on the court, always had an inspiring nudge for me to try new things that I was often too scared to try like choir or student council and he always knew when I was trying to pull one over on him! He saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself until I was an adult. I often thought back to him when I would learn these lessons, “I should have paid more attention to what Mr. Robillard said back then”. Thanks for the wonderful memories and insights in some of my most difficult moments.
You will be missed.

Condolence from Gord Hunter on December 16th, 2025 2:48 PM

It’s amazing to see the incredible legacy of music and connection that Bob created in his years of teaching. I remember our music class at NDSS “testing” him when he first arrived. We were a close group of friends, and as teenagers do, we decided that we would see what this new guy was made of. We switched instruments, something we’d done with substitute teachers in the past and they either didn’t catch on or got very upset. As Bob took up the baton, we made a terrible noise. He caught on right away, laughed and said, “nice try”, then gently instructed us to return to the right instruments. From that point forward we knew that this guy was as sharp as a tack and had a sense of humour. He quickly moved to the top of a very short list of teachers that we would go on to trust implicitly, work to impress, and ultimately pay tribute to for the years of instruction and leadership.
My condolences to his family, his colleagues and to all his students who have lost not just a former teacher but a friend.

Condolence from Dave MacLeod on December 16th, 2025 3:22 PM

Dear Sandy, Dave, Erin, and your entire family

I was truly privileged to work with Bob for many years at SHDHS. Bob was a talented musician, who truly loved what he was doing, and conveyed that love to his students – it is a real tribute to him that so many of his students have gone on to play music professionally, and that a number of them have followed his example and become teachers.
Bob was always very supportive of my various activities at South Huron – he readily prepared his bands to perform for our Remembrance Day observances. He was proud to showcase the talents of the different jazz ensembles at the annual Excellence in Public Education awards put on by OSSTF and the Huron County, and then Avon Maitland District School Boards. The annual Christmas Concert was an integral part of fundraising for the Huron County Christmas Bureau, and his advice to stick a $5.00 bill in each of the KFC buckets to act as a ‘prompt’ when the buckets got passed along was very effective. Bob’s classes always made a great contribution to our Annual Terry Fox National School Run Day.
For many years our OSAID group coordinated our efforts with the band for the Exeter Santa Claus parade, and I saw first hand the time and effort he put into getting the kids onto the float that preceded “Santa”.
Much has been said about Bob’s dry wit, and I know that when our daughter Melissa decided to take music she was a bit ‘scared’ of Mr. Robilliard. She soon discovered that he was a wonderful, caring teacher, and that the music program was welcoming to all students. Melissa provided the “back up warning” on the band float one year, blowing a note on her baritone sax – Mr. Robilliard made it clear that if she was going to fall off the float, to pass the sax first, as it couldn’t be easily replaced, where she could be!
Towards the end of his career Bob would joke ‘today would be a good day for golfing’ or to work on the RR RR (Robert Robilliard Railroad), but he always gave his best to his students, and in turn demanded their best, which they eagerly did.
While we mourn his loss, it is clear that many people will celebrate the positive and lasting impact Bob had on their lives. I give thanks for a life well lived, for work well done, and for a legacy which will live on for many years in the hearts of so many people.

Condolence from Dianne Heatherington on December 16th, 2025 4:31 PM

Dear Sandy, Dave, Erin & your family,
I was saddened to hear of Bob’s passing. He definitely had an impact on countless students and brought the great joy of music to South Huron and the whole town of Exeter.
Bob had a wonderful sense of humour – I loved his sarcastic wit – he always had a new joke or two to recount.
I recall a band/ music trip to Sault Ste. Marie and Mackinaw Island that I was chaperoning with him. Loved attending all the SH concerts and singing in the choir with the students.
Living in London, I lost touch with him since retiring 11 years ago, but he was a mentor to so many current music teachers. I have been a member of the Forest City Singers for over a decade and our wonderfully talented director was a former student of Bob’s.
May your happy memories of Bob bring you comfort.
Thinking of all of you with love,

With humour, heart and a little more humour, he made the music room a place of belonging and inspiration. His influence will be heard and felt for many years! I also enjoyed watching him lead the Exeter United Church choir – always a private/quiet joke with the choir to start followed by a great musical performance! So many memories, so much music! To Sandy, Erin (Isaac), Dave & Family
We were all so saddened to hear of Bob’s untimely death and know it has been a long, painful ordeal. Reading through the condolences, a common theme becomes clear: that Mr. Robilliard (Sir) had a tremendous impact on the students and families at South Huron. The music program was created and flourished under his guidance. I was struck by how popular the program and classes were -especially considering early morning rehearsals were involved -and we all know how popular early mornings are with teenagers! All 3 of our boys participated in the program, first under Bob’s leadership and then Isaac’s. It is not surprising that there are many here who were inspired and mentored by Bob to become music teachers or to continue on with musical studies. But what I think is truly amazing is the number of students who didn’t take music lessons prior to high school, but still flocked to the program and stayed with it for all 4 or 5 years, including my own 3. It was the cool place to be, due to the gifted and dedicated educator that Bob was. What an impact he had on so many and what a legacy he leaves behind. I hope that gives some comfort to all those he leaves behind.

Condolence from John Matthees on December 16th, 2025 10:07 PM

My sincere condolences to Bob’s entire family.

I was a student at Queen’s faculty of education (Music Program) and practice taught under Mr. Robilliard.

After the academic year had ended Bob arranged to hire me as a supply teacher to cover his classes (Napannee DSS) while he and his Band were on a four day music trip. This would not have been possible but for the fact that Bob and Sandy said I could stay at their home for the duration. This just demonstrates their selflessness and generosity.

In my second or third year of teaching music at F. E. Madill Secondary, in Wingham, I learned that Bob had taken a new teaching assignment in Exeter….also in what was then the Huron County Board of Education. I was so grateful to know he’d be in the area continuing to set high musical standards.

In part to his influence the four high school music programs in Huron county began what I believe was then called Bandarama. This was a wonderful opportunity for music students Board-wide to gain performing opportunities and learning
from the experts we brought in to lead them in a few selections.

He will always be remembered as a fine mentor with a sometimes crusty exterior but very soft center.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of those left behind.

I cannot imagine what a loss Bob’s passing would be, I know that he was such a pillar not only in the family, but the community as a whole. He shaped generations of students, and many will remember him with fondness.

I am happy that Bob and I were able to speak for a few precious minutes towards the end. It takes moments like that to reflect on how people can shape you and guide you along the path of life, and how a void can be left when they are gone. I will attempt to honour his wishes and legacy to the best of my abilities.

Rest in peace.

Condolence from Jan Miniely Bracken on December 18th, 2025 7:36 PM

I can see from reading these many fine tributes that I am perhaps one of Bob’s “older” musical friends. We played in Band together, sang in the choir (under Gerry Fagan’s baton), went on Band outings, and played in a Woodwind Quintet at Sir Adam Beck Secondary in London – before it was the Ed Centre.

Bob introduced us to his love of Chicago at our rehearsals – back when they were a new phenomenon!

He expected the best of himself on his own (ornery) instrument, but was gentle with the rest of us. His warmth, wit and easy laugh were endearing and made music-making a pleasure.

I am saddened that he is gone, but what a wonderful legacy he leaves in the lives he impacted! We can all feel grateful that we had the chance to know and appreciate him.

Wishing you comfort and peace, Sandy, and all the family.

Condolence from Jeff and Cindy Reaburn on December 19th, 2025 11:49 AM

Sandy, Dave and Jessica, Erin and Isaac,
Cindy and I are very saddened to hear of Bob’s passing and offer our deepest condolences. Bob was one of the finest classroom teachers with whom I have had the privilege to work and he made a tremendous impact on the lives of literally hundreds of students, including Jamie and Ben. Bob created one of the most successful high school music programs in Ontario and SHDHS bands achieved great success annually in competitions. But more importantly, he created an environment where all were welcome. The music room was a home for many students, a safe and caring place, but also a place of fun and good humour. His music program provided many students with a connection to school that would otherwise not have existed. Every year former students would come back to South Huron, specifically to see Mr. Robilliard, a testament to the impact that he had. And I know of several who went on to pursue careers in music, largely due to Bob’s influence. He has left a legacy that will live on in the memories of his students and in the South Huron community. May you take comfort in knowing that he will be remembered fondly by so many.

Sincerely,
Jeff and Cindy Reaburn

Bob was a one of a kind teacher to so many students over the years, and as parents, we were very grateful for the opportunities he provided our girls, Stephanie and Ashley. Getting one of our daughters out of bed in the morning was quite a chore, but she was always ready to go to school on band mornings. May you all feel the love and respect Bob earned throughout his career and as a valued member of the community. We’re certain he is either conducting a band, or playing an instrument while he makes a joke or sarcastic quip toward his fellow musicians in heaven.

Mary and I extend our deepest sympathies on the passing of Bob . We know you will miss him but remember the good times and take comfort that his soul is at peace .
Bob touched so many lives through his teaching career or as choir director , band leader , golfer and model railroader .

Rest easy my friend . We will talk trains again some day on the other side.

He was such an important influence in my life. He truly had the patience of a saint, modelled compassion and empathy in his classes.

So many great lessons that he shared through music that helped guide so many people towards successful adulthood.

May he rest in peace

One of the best teachers I’ve ever had. He made music and band the “cool” thing to do. It was great being a part of it all and learning from an icon. Sir was the best teacher a person could ask for. If you felt badly about your skills or how you were playing he was always there with a kind word, and a helping hand. I remember in elementary school when the “big kids” came to Stephen Central to play for us, I saw the clarinets and him conducting and knew I wanted to be a part of that community.. After college, I came back to Exeter area and joined the community band. It and him reignited my love for music and I’ve kept it up still 25 years+ after that yet.. He is always in the back of my mind and always will be. Sir you likely wouldn’t want all this attention, but it is truly deserved. I just wish we didn’t have to live in a world without you in it.. RIP Sir, you will be sorely missed by all who knew you.. Sandy, Dave Erin, and all your families, I wish you peace and strength this holiday season. It will be hard for sure….

Sending you all condolences and sympathy during this difficult time. He was my favourite teacher, his wit was amazing followed by his huge laugh. I will always cherish high school for my music memories thanks to him. Hugs

My deepest condolences to all of you.

I have so many wonderful memories of Sir, from a baseball trip to Detroit when Sir was “Bob”, to music class, early morning band rehearsals, and all the band trips after he became, and always will be, “Sir”.

Without his humour, kindness, and acceptance of his students, high school wouldn’t have been the great experience it was for me. I know I wouldn’t still be playing all these years later if it hadn’t been for Sir’s guidance and enthusiasm.

He will be sorely missed and thought of often.

Impossible to summarize my feelings about Bob in one post, but I will try my best!
I simply would not be doing what I do with my life without Bob’s influence. As one of his former students, I think I can speak for all of us when I say we were lucky have such a strong, kind, and grounded presence to introduce us to music at a young age.
Bob’s teaching & lifestyle held a very important lesson for me, which I interpreted as this: work hard at what you do & take it seriously, but never take yourself too seriously as a result.
After graduating from SHDHS, I always looked forward to Christmas services at Exeter United with the brass ensemble for this exact reason. Between every song, Bob would have us holding in laughter from some impeccably timed wisecrack, but he was always able to coax professional performances & focus out of us as soon as the baton dropped again. This, to me, is his legacy, because he was the same with all people, whether you were in grade 9 & brand new to your instrument, or a seasoned university student back for Christmas: he only expected that you have high standards for yourself. That you would do your best, be responsible, and be kind (and to take a few jokes in stride along the way). That faith & respect for people, whether in a musical context or outside of it, is what I’ll always remember.
There will never be another like Bob.
With deepest condolences,
Emmett O’Reilly

It is impossible to say what an impact Rob had on my life and so many others. He was the reason so many of us kept coming to school, just so we could be in the band. His singular personality, humour and heart rippled out to touch countless lives. I’m the man I am today because of his influence and I’m truly grateful.

I’m so sorry for your loss Sandy, Dave, Erin and family. Know that he was loved and he lives on in our memories and our hearts. ❤️

Those were great years at SOUTH HURON DHS many years ago as teaching mates at the school and enjoying games of croquinole with Rob and Joe Fulop up at Varna or down at Simcoe.
Above all we very much appreciated the lovely musical atmosphere Rob created for all of us in our South Huron Community. Please accept my sympathy in the loss of a husband and father and may all of your family enjoy our Lord’s comfort and blessings at this sad time.

Sandy, Erin, Dave and your entire family,

My deepest condolences to all of you. He was a truly incredible teacher and an extraordinary man. What he brought to SHDHS and to the broader community was unmatched. I will always remember him as one of the the most impactful parts of my high school (and musical) experiences. Without fanfare, he influenced each of us in different ways with his humor, quiet guidance and just showing up for us in ways that went far beyond the classroom. I will always be so grateful for having the opportunity to know him and learn from him – he taught us how to be our authentic selves and we were lucky to have him touch our lives! Sending all of you my thoughts and sympathies.

Sandy and Family,

I am very sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. I have many fond memories of Bob at NMC. He always had a smile and great stories. I remember how well he interacted with the campers, always finding unique ways to bring the musical concept home. He was a true genuine person. My thoughts and well wishes to you and your family.

Approximately a quarter century after my final year of high school music with Mr. Robilliard, I found myself reflecting again about the profound impact he made on myself and many others during our formative years. That lead me to look up his latest exploits online and I came across this very sad news of his passing.

My deepest condolences to the family. He was such a special person that touched so many lives. His creative energy and belief in my abilities inspired me to find my voice in filmmaking years down the road. I love you, Mr. Robilliard, and I will always remember you.
