RIEHL: Elda (Riley) of Exeter

December15,1941 – January 14, 2023

Passed away peacefully with family by her side at Stratford General Hospital as a result of RSV on Saturday, January 14, 2023 of Exeter at the age of 81. Beloved wife of the late Gerald “Jerry” Riehl (2021) for over 61 years. Cherished mother of Kim Riehl-Nesbit (Rob), Jackie Riehl (Chris), Michele (Alan) Hodgert, and Tonya (Harry) Busch. Adored grandma “Old Mommy” of Alana Hodgert, Andrew (Britt) Hodgert, Amanda Hodgert, and Kai Busch and great-grandma of Axton and Hayden. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Marilyn Goodfellow, Dorothy (Del) Bedard, Mike Bannon, Donna (Rob) Shaddick, Gordon Riley, Gerald (Debbie) Riley, Sandra (Colin) Alexander, Lorna Durnin, Shirley Smith, Andy (Remi) Riehl, Faye Riehl, and Helen Riehl. Fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Ben and Marion (Hunking) Riley, brother Doug Riley, Doreen Bannon, Greg Riley, Ron Goodfellow, and Len King.

Elda was born in Hullett Township in 1941. Upon meeting her love Jerry, they lived in numerous towns before finally settling in Exeter. For years, she cared for others ahead of herself. When Jerry had health challenges, she cared for him through all his needs. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards, shuffleboard, and being crafty. Jerry would make pieces out of wood, and Elda would paint them. She enjoyed being Michele’s sidekick on the paper route, playing with her great grand twins and visiting with her neighbours at Riverview Estates. Above all, she looked forward to her weekend visits with her family, when there were no activities planned. Even battling her own health challenges, she never gave up and was determined to continue with her activities, baking, and visits.

Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 370 William Street, EXETER on Friday from 5 – 8 PM. Registration is required and appreciated. Please click “Register Now” below to register.

Elda’s funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, January 21st at 11 AM with a celebration of life to follow at Ironwood Golf Club.

For those unable to attend the funeral in person, the family invites you to join them from the comfort of your home. Stream the service live or at your convenience by visiting www.facebook.com/haskettfh

Donations to Jessica’s House would be appreciated by the family.

My warmest thoughts and deepest sympathy to all of Elda’s family.

Our family connection goes quite far back , apparently, so Sister Anne tells me, even before Lab City.

While visiting Mum and Dad at their retirement Farm near Clinton, we often visited your parents in Exeter. Such a wonderful welcoming place to visit, with lots of smiles and laughter.
I was given some wooden pieces that your parents made too. They still adorn the bureau in the bedroom where my grandchildren sleep now.
You girls were their world and as I watched the beautiful video, it is apparent that their world of love was made larger with the
grandchildren .

You have been left with a wonderful legacy. They will live on in you and yours. Memories are such a gift to cherish forever.
With the kindest of thoughts,
Wanda Saunders( nee Snell) and family

It is so obvious to see all the love shown by all the pictures you have chosen to be displayed online. Words are never enough to ease the heartbreak you are feeling right now . . . but you have so many wonderful families, friends, neighbours & community grieving along side you also – please find strength by leaning on them for faith, courage, comfort, and support. Remember Elda’s devoted love of those she held dear . . . her memory will forever live on in your hearts & her legacy will live on in all of you . . .

It is always hard to see our once lively parents age & eventually leave this world behind – but may it comfort you somewhat knowing that your Mom is resting in peace & reunited with your Dad in Heaven forever. In this sorrowful time, we would like to extend to you our heartfelt condolences. You are in our thoughts & prayers – sending lots of Love & Hugs to all. 💞🙏💞
