Posted By Haskett Funeral Homes On August 13, 2025 @ 1:50 PM In Exeter,Obituary | 214 Comments

Peacefully at Jessica’s House, Exeter, with family by her side, on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 of Grand Bend and formerly of Exeter in her 60th year. Loving wife of Chris Clarke. Proud mother of Maddison Riddell, Mitchell Riddell (Heidi He), and Rose Riddell (fiancé Noah Rothbauer). Dear step-mother of Amanda Clarke (Dan Hunt), Jenna Duck (Ryan), and step-grandmother of Ryker and Carter. Cherished daughter of Allen and Marlene (Fraser) Hayter. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Glenn and Ingrid Hayter, and Grant and Kimberly Hayter. Lovingly remembered by Steve Riddell, nieces, nephews, a great-niece, a great-nephew, cousins, and her many cherished friends.
Sue had an outgoing personality that drew people to her instantly. If you met her once, you weren’t just an acquaintance — you became her friend. One of her greatest passions was photography, a love she often shared with Chris. Through the lens of her camera, she captured not only images but moments, emotions, and memories that told the stories of the people and places she loved. Sue had a rare gift for making people feel seen, heard, and truly valued.
A special thank you to all of the doctors, nurses, and support staff. A heartfelt thanks to her dear friend Sherri Penn for all the care and compassion provided to Sue over the last few months.
Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 456 Main Street South, EXETER on Friday, August 15th from 5 – 9 PM. Sue’s funeral service will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 40007 Kirkton Rd, Exeter on Sunday, August 17th at 1:30 PM.
In honour of Sue, please wear your favorite red attire for the visitation and funeral.
If you are unable to attend the service in person, the family invites you watch the service live or at your convenience by visiting www.facebook.com/haskettfh.
Donations to Jessica’s House would be appreciated by the family.

Dear Chris, Maddi, Mitch, Rose, your beloved siblings and the Golden Girls. As noted in many of these messages I too was happy to have been able to have occasions to be in Sue’s vibrant circle – albeit infrequently. Sue’s light, laughter and effervescent personality will live on in all the lives she touched …and oh, there were so many. Godspeed to you my friend. I’m confident you’re in the presence of God’s light right now. You will be missed my friend
When you lose someone you can’t live without; your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news, as they live forever in your heart.
SUSIE Q was an incredible human, a model we could all take a page from and live by in her honour.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. Sue was truly a remarkable soul—always the first to lend a helping hand, she took ideas and ran full tilt with them, inspiring everyone around her. One of my fondest memories is how she brought together over a hundred women in our small community, fostering health and friendship through her joyful, competitive spirit. She also captured countless precious moments of families, including mine, preserving memories that will forever remind us of her warmth and kindness. Please continue to shine bright, Sue—forever a “Beauty” in our hearts.

As we mourn the loss of an extraordinary woman, we remember Sue for her passion, grace and boundless energy. Sue embraced every moment of every day with courage, enthusiasm and joy where she included everyone in her love of people and life thus leaving a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to have met her on her journey. Although her time with us was far too short, her spirit was larger than life. Sue always looked for the good in others, lived fully, loved deeply and never took a single day for granted. Her laughter and enthusiasm will echo in our memories forever. This is a celebration of a life well lived and a person who made other lives better. Thank you for your friendship Sue. Sue always lent a helping hand, hosted many neighborhood parties and took on many community projects. She always hosted a Pryde Blvd Christmas party. Even in Covid, she had us meet on the street! When I first met Susan, it was on the SHDHS track. She was involved in a friendly competition and she was everything competitive – with JOY and laughter always, and it was often documented by photographic evidence. It was easy to say yes to joining the Beauties. Many beautiful events and times spent with her and the ladies, the miles walked, stories shared, the lives changed and friendships formed – Susan impacted so many stories and memories, including the many friendships that grew that still blossom today. Imagine the lives enriched from Bust A Move, followed by all the things she championed in this community. We were the lucky ones but I know she would say the same.
The first to send flowers, an encouraging word, an invite, or an open home.
We will miss Sue 🩷but … we won’t ever forget her and her big love ❤️ for everyone.
Keeping you all in heart and mind the days and weeks ahead ❤️
My condolences
Cherish your memories

It is difficult to find the words to describe the impact Sue has had on so many people, both close friends and those she met only once. It was the feeling – the joy, the positivity she exuded through her smile, her actions and her genuine love of life that was instantly contagious when with her. This makes her passing so damn hard to understand. Please know you are surrounded by people who care deeply about your family and are walking beside you down this most heart-breaking road.
My deepest sympathies to all of Sue’s family. Her bright light has been dimmed far too soon.

It only seems like yesterday that all of us kids grew up together in Sunday school and church. I am praying for peace, comfort and rest for the coming days.

Ruth & I would like to send our condolences to Susan’s family and to Allen and Marlene Hayter.
Ruth and I got to know Susan and her parents at the Pentecostal Church in Exeter, through the young peoples that was held there, plus she was good friends with our daughters, Kathleen, Monica, and Vicki, as well with Lee Anne, and Eliesha. Even when at young peoples, Susan was very out going then, and made friends with everyone. She just seemed to have that outgoing personality that made you comfortable, no matter your age. Susan has fought the good fight with cancer, and now she will be forever dwelling with the Lord our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Sue was a bright light in the community and her memory will remain as such. Whether it was a quick hello with a smile when crossing paths around town or having a chat while helping her out at the store it was always great to see her. She will be greatly missed.
My condolences to the entire family and all of her friends.

This is so extremely hard to put into words, words just seem so inadequate right now. Your mom had such an impact on everyone she met. Sue was just an incredible person, with a heart that exploded with love for everyone. She has left a huge hole in this community, we will never forget her. Please remember that we are right beside you walking this heartbreaking road and your mom will live forever in your hearts and she will never be forgotten. Huge hugs to you all.
Maddison, Mitchell, Rosie
Deepest condolences from our family to yours. We are from your Brantford past and remember all of you well from hockey, school and the neighbourhood. I always stayed in touch with your Mom on social media and so I saw the awful news in May. Our family has gone through the cancer journey and our hearts were with all of you on yours with your Mom. While you are all devastated now, the way Susan lived her life, her joy and love of life, generosity of spirit and the grace and strength of these past four months are life memories and gifts to you from your Mom, gifts you will always have. We are thinking of all of you.
Chris, we have never met but I can’t imagine how hard this has and will be for you……sending our sympathies.
Susan, Bill, Emma and Andrew Brown

RIP Susan as you earned a place in heaven.
I truly believe Sue was born with superpowers. She had the gift and the ability of bringing people together for any type of cause, big or small. She was kind, generous, caring, and passionate to all who had the opportunity to know her. It’s a big loss for our small town.
Please know you are all in our hearts and our thoughts at the sad time.
Pete, Janet Megan and Kyle
Maddi, Mitch, Rose, Chris and your beautiful families,
How honoured we are to have called Sue our friend. A beautiful soul. A light in the darkness. A true “one of a kind” gem. Sue was the kind of friend who made you feel loved, heard, and truly valued. We hold countless memories shared with Sue; our baseball and hockey days, shopping trips, scavenger hunts, fundraisers, photoshoots, walks on the trail, beach days, birthdays, graduation and prom, and let’s not forget that trip to Florida where we stole each other’s kid for a week when our vacations overlapped…an idea that sparked over strawberry daiquiris at Crabby’s after a girls hockey game. These moments in time were filled with love, trust, and so much laughter that will live in our hearts forever.
I am so incredibly grateful for the gift of our friendship and all the crazy fun adventures we shared together. She brought the sparkle and the laughs, and we will honour her by living more like Sue; spreading the same love and light she gave so freely, with her vibrant, generous spirit.
Wrapping you all in love and holding you in our deepest sympathy.
Vicki, Kirk, Shay, Sam & Jayce ❤️❤️❤️

Where to start??? Everyone has summed it up in so many ways of kind words and condolences.
Sue “Suzie Q” was simply, “ONE OF THE BEST”. She was a fantastic friend, co-worker, a shoulder to lean on, someone whom always seen the best in everyone , a true Angel that walked the face of this earth!
Sue was loved by so many, she served the Lord well, and now has a place to rest without pain…..but Damn we will miss her , but how lucky we are to have been in her circle.
In Our Hearts Forever,
Jeff & Jenni Heywood
I can still see the beautiful smile of that sweet little girl wearing the pink gingham dress and pixie haircut sitting in the church pew in front of my family with her brothers and Mom and Dad, so many years ago. I’ve followed her story, I’ve hoped and I’ve prayed. My heart breaks for you: Allen and Marlene and your entire family. Now, I pray that God will comfort you and give you peace.
“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart and saves those who are crushed in spirit .” Psalm 34:18

Chris, Maddison, Mitch, Rosie & all family
I wish I could take the pain & sorrow away… I met Susan in grade 1 at Stephen Central School… there were many birthday parties (when she would make me jump into her parents pool from high above, you can do it, she’d say). If it was a school play (Sue would be the star), or the Exeter parades, or our grade 8 trip to Camp Sylvan (performing 3 blind mice!)
She was always in the spotlight.
We met again at HMP & both surprised to see each other!
Sue would take the time (whether she had it or not), for a chat.
I know she will be missed, but loved every day. The blessing is our paths crossed & I now have nice memories to share.
Chris, Maddie, Mitch and Rosie and family – even though I didn’t know each of you personally, I knew you through Sue. She was so proud of her family. She talked about you and shared her love for all of you, with all of us. She was an extraordinary human, who believed passionately in her community too. Nothing with Sue was ever half measure – she was all in every time! We were blessed to have her, and your grief will be as great as your love, which is unfathomable right now. I am so profoundly sorry for your loss, we have lost a rare and wonderful light. Sending light and love your way,
Kimberley

We offer our deepest sympathy to you at this difficult time. I met Sue at Harwood’s Drug Store and we hit it off, Sue was a bundle of energy and laughter. She found a small sofa (on the side of road) and brought it to my apt., She invited my son Bill and I on their families hay ride to sing Xmas carols. I watched her as she became a mannequin in the front window of a store in the mall. Sue even introduced me to my husband of 28 years. I think she may have been an angel. Chris I cannot imagine the heartbreak for you to find a love and lose her so suddenly. Hugs to all.

From the moment I first met her back when Rosie and Laura were graduating from grade 8, and I joined the decorating committee, I knew I had a friend for life. She touched so many lives with her positive attitude, love for life, and kindheartedness. Her laughter and energy was like none I’ve seen before. All these incredible traits live on in each of you as she loved you so much. The world would definitely be a better place if we were all just a little bit more like Sue. ❤️ We will be forever thankful to have been given the opportunity to call her our friend. I am so fortunate to have Sue as a treasured friend for over 53 years. I will always have many fond childhood memories of spending time with Sue that have carried over into our adult lives Whatever stage in life we were at, when we got together, we were always able to pick right up where we left off and of course, have lots of laughs, sometimes tears . We are so sorry to hear of Sue’s passing. She was a wonderful, vibrant woman and had such a beautiful smile. Over the years we collaborated on photo books, we went to the same exercise classes and she did our family photos a few times as well as “Porch Pictures” during covid. She tried to talk me into kayaking but I was too chicken! When our son passed a few years ago, Sue gave us a lovely garden ornament that we cherish. It is a beautiful memorial to Aaron and now it will be a memorial to her as well. Sue was an incredible person and her memory will live on through the lives she touched. I was fortunate to call her friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you navigate this huge loss.
We are sorry to hear that Sue has passed away. I well remember the first time I met her…she said to me “you are the other bookend” and I replied pardon me…she responded with a laugh “well you live on one end of Pryde and I live on the other…that’s makes us Pryde Blvds bookends”. We will be thinking of all of her family in the days ahead.

Her laughter, radiant smile, strength and the love of family, friends and community she did spread and shared her one of a kind magical “firefly fairy dust”. 🧚♀️ with us all.
To Sue’s parents, WOW, what a daughter you raised. Sue was everything you could wish for in a child, to grow up kind, caring, generous, respectful and humble. When she needed to, she took the bull by the horns and got the job done. She showed her compassion by doing for others.

An Ode to Sue
Your memory is a keepsake which we will never part.
I will forever hold our friendship in my heart.
I’m so grateful for the 14 years together
You lit up the room no matter the weather.
You pushed me beyond my comfort zone!
Never allowing one tiny groan.
Only Sue could convince me to dress as Mrs Roper or a clown.
And then take pictures & parade us around town!
You convinced 31 Beauties to Bust a Move,
And led us on stage to dance our groove!
Those we love don’t go away.
They walk beside us everyday!
I will hold my memories dear,
And when cardinals appear,
I will know that Sue is near!
Your life was a blessing, your smile a treasure
You are loved beyond words & I will miss you beyond measure.
Golden Girls Forever ❤️
Thank you for being a best Friend !
Our deepest sympathies to all of Sue’s family and friends. May she rest in peace,

Dear Chris, Maddison, Mitchell, Rose and the Hayter Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Sue truly was and remains to be one of a kind.
We became friends in our early twenties. Sue was one of my bridesmaids, and stayed with me the night before I was married. In turn, I stayed with her and had the honour of being a bridesmaid when she got married. As with anyone who knew Sue, she was a true friend. Always ready for adventure, always with that smile on her face and a twinkle in her eyes.
I am so thankful to have had the privilege of sharing even of small portion of her life.
My thoughts and prayers are with you,
Natale (Randy) Cullen
Although I never had the privilege of meeting Sue in person, I remain deeply grateful for the kindness she once showed me in trying to encourage a connection between Steve and I.
That effort spoke of her generous heart, and it is something I will never ever forget.
This year, as Sue became ill, I was given the gift of finally meeting my so. Steven and my grandchildren Maddison, Mitchell, and Rose. Though I have only known them for a few short months, they have already brought joy and meaning into my life, and I know their mother’s love lives on through them.
My condolences go out to all who loved Sue. May her memory be a blessing, and may her family, especially her children, find comfort in the love and strength she leaves behind.
To Sue’s Family
I would meet Sue when I passed by her home and she would be working outside. We would have great conversations which I enjoyed. She was an amazing woman and I was happy to have befriended her due to our time together.

To say that meeting her once made you a friend is an understatement—we instantly became family. Sue showed everyone she met love and compassion.
One of her greatest passions was photography—though thankfully, she didn’t capture everything we did, or we might’ve been in trouble. But we laughed and enjoyed every minute. Those moments, like her photos, were full of life, joy, and connection.
Sue had a bold spirit—she always just did it and asked for forgiveness later. No matter what she took on, she gave it 110%. Her warmth, creativity, and fearless energy left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
I will always hold her close to my heart.
Golden Girls forever.
