RATHWELL: Bruce Roy formerly of Brucefield
Posted By Haskett Funeral Homes On March 10, 2025 @ 7:06 PM In Obituary,Seaforth | 103 Comments

Bruce Rathwell, in his 80th year passed away on March 7, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born in Clinton, Ontario, raised and worked on the family farm outside of Brucefield, later married the love of his life the late Dawn (Robinson) Rathwell. Together raising three children Kim (Bill) Preszcator, Kent (Joni) Rathwell, and Kelli (Brian) Scott. Later enjoying five grandchildren Colton, Quaid (Toria), Colby (Rob), Kaidin, and Xander. Dearly missed brother of Gerald Rathwell, Jean (Bruce) Horton, Bill (Sandra) Rathwell, Pat (Bill) Chipchase, and Don (Deb) Rathwell. Fondly remember by his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents D’Arcy and Madeleine Rathwell, his sister Barbara and sister-in-law Jean Rathwell.
Bruce was a visionary, entrepreneur and had a positive “get it done and do it right” energy. Starting his
career as a farmer, proud to become an auctioneer, partnered in opening the White Carnation Banquet
Hall and then onto promoting and selling farms across Ontario. He worked hard, loved cooking, entertaining, traveling and landscaping (with a lot of flowers)! He could always make good in any situation and was big-hearted. Through continued acts of kindness and generosity (along with his endless wit), he has made an impact on so many lives and is forever remembered for it.
Keeping with Bruce’s wishes cremation has taken place and a “come and go” celebration of life will be held at the White Carnation Banquet Hall in Holmesville on Saturday, April 5 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, with words of remembrance at 3:00pm.
Memorial Donations may be made to West Huron Care Centre (Blue Water Rest Home) in Zurich.

To Bruce’s family,
What a pleasure it has been to get to know Bruce since joining WHCC/BWRH. He was full of charm, wit, good conversation and a mischievous smile!
He made good use of his time at the home by tending to the gardens, making flower arrangements, socializing, and was a great welcoming committee. He always loved to help us out together and ride our floats die the Zurich Fair and Christmas parade, which my husband and daughter always looked forward to, as they helped to prep/assemble and drive the floats. He always told me how great of a cook I was because I made the best eggs at men’s breakfast…one of his favourite programs!
He was so proud of his family and had such love for each of you.
Thinking of you and hoping your years of wonderful memories carry you through the coming days and weeks.
Sincerely,
Chelsey, Jon and Taylor Passmore

Dear Kim, Kelli, Kent and families.
I am so sorry for your loss. I know how much your dad meant to you, and I hope you find comfort in the memories you shared. I have many fond memories of Bruce. He was always so kind and helpful to us when we were growing up. Always a fun time at the Rathwell house.
Please accept my sincere condolences.
Bruce’s wife was the sister of my secretary at The Garlic Box, Bonnie Lawrence, and so I heard many loving stories from her about Bruce.
When our mother, Jennie Rowe was a resident at Bluewater, we got to know Bruce, in person. He was a kind-hearted, all in, “get’r done” guy that never complained but saw the sunny side of every situation. Bruce would come out and help us garden in the public courtyard, pulling weeds, and keeping up with all of us. He and Jennie were friends sharing in many conversations during their time at Bluewater. I wished we have known him better but was grateful for the time we did enjoy in his company. Bruce will certainly be a man missed by his family. Our deepest condolences to the family.
Our sympathies to the entire Rathwell family.
Without Bruce, we would not be in Canada. For all beginning in a new country you need open hearts, open minds to guide you… he was at the right place at the right moment… watching from the distance… our needs, our struggles, to always offer his help and advice. We were greatful for his presence, his supportive and positive attitude. He was a cheerleader like no other.
May he rest in peace and rejoice in his new home beside Dawn…
Our heartfelt condolences to the Rathwell family. May your many memories bring you comfort and peace.
John and MaryLou Driscoll

Kim, Kent, Kelli and the Entire Rathwell families,
Bruce was a smooth talker and a smooth dancer. He definitely had the gift to gab and was a natural born salesman. We were so fortunate to have him be dad’s side kick when they were at BWRH. I would see him in the hallways and he always seemed to be the social convenor and always had a group tagging along with him. He would always tell me it was “Bruce and his Angels”….. Well Bruce you gained your wings and I am pretty sure an angel met you up there to have a dance.
Thinking of you all,
Mary Ellen, Mark, Jack and Sam

We were deeply saddened to hear about your Dad’s passing. He will truly be missed by so many.
I came to know Bruce when he and Mom were neighbors and co-conspirators at Bluewater. They shared wonderful visions for the gardens and were constantly planning their next project together. What I cherished most was how they looked out for one another—cheering each other on during good times and offering steadfast support whenever needed.
Your dad’s warm smile and positive outlook were always so welcoming. I treasure the many heartfelt conversations and genuine laughs we shared. He was a shining light to those around him.
I’m so sorry to hear about your dad’s death. Your father was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, and I was lucky to have know him. It’s hard to say goodbye and even harder when it’s to someone like your dad. He was one-of-a-kind and will be truly missed. Your Dad’s kindness, wisdom, generosity and witty sense of humor touched my life in so many ways while growing up living across the road from him. I will forever cherish the memories we shared Skating on the pond in the winter and going over for visits with my dad. Wishing you strength and peace as you navigate through this heartbreaking loss.

Dear Don, Deb & Family,
Our deepest sympathy . Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Treasure the Memories.
Dear Rathwell Family,
we are very sad hearing about Bruce’s passing and like to offer our condolences to the entire family.
Our family wouldn’t have settled here in Ontario without Bruce. He understood hat we were looking for and he found us the place where we are today. He was with us and supported us all the way during the move to Canada until we felt being home. Bruce did not stop there, even after that he was always not far, stopped in, called or just drove by and waved – assuring himself things were alright with us.
Bruce and Dawn became close friends to our parents Hilma and Georg and they also became part of our family.
After Dawn’s passing Bruce was was very often at our family and farm events until the past few years. Since then, it were more phone call exchanges to keep him and us updated. When the phone rang at 5:30 am, it was a good chance it was Bruce!
The last time we had him on the phone he said he was feeling a lot better as people around telling him how he was. That’s how we’ll keep Bruce in our memories and close: get things done – look after others – and put himself second.
Rest in peace Bruce, we know you and Dawn will be watching.
Dear Kim and Family
My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time.

We are so sorry to hear about Bruce’s passing
He will be missed by many!
My Condolences to the family. One of my first summer jobs after moving to Canada as a teenager was working in Bruce’s Real Estate office helping to translate. Bruce was always such a positive, happy guy he was a pleasure to work with and learn from. We had a lot of fun that summer. Thinking fondly of Bruce back than and over the years since.
I’m so sorry to hear about Bruce’s passing. I spent just a short time with Bruce at Bluewater but the short time was so impactful! We quickly bonded over our shared love of travel, and he’d spend as long as he could sharing his stories from all over the globe, encouraging me “to do it while I’m young, go see the world”. Sending thoughts and prayers to his whole family.
Our sincere condolences to the Rathwell family at this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Colleen Faulds Walden & Peter Walden
Bruce reminded me that one’s life really is about people. He was always so incredibly generous. Bruce travelled with a seismic energy and smile that filled the room . My condolences to all of Bruce’s loved ones. Take comfort at this difficult time knowing, he’ll be so happy to be reunited with Dawn, the love of his life. Travel peacefully my friend.
To the Rathwell Family,
We were deeply saddened to hear of Bruce’s passing. We always enjoyed his visits and the good, informative conversations whenever he stopped by the shop or when we ran into him at the coffee shop in Clinton. Those moments were truly appreciated and will be fondly remembered. He will be greatly missed.
Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
With heartfelt condolences,

Kent & Joni, Kim & Bill, Kelly & Brian, and all Bruce’s family & friends;
Our sincere condolences in the loss of your dear Father, Grandfather and all Bruce was to so many. I have numerous fond and fun memories of Bruce (& Dawn!) and my friendship with them over many years. Several times visiting the Rathwell home and being entertained in the classiest ways on each occasion. Bruce and Dawn were all about treating their guests to the best of hospitality. Ample food and drink and great conversation. I always admired Bruce’s energy and optimism about business and life. He and I shared many memorable and lively chats about politics, business, etc., and for the most part agreed with each other. I will especially remember spending some extra quality ”guy time” with Bruce as we hit the town of Banff for the night life on the week of Kent & Joni’s wedding. It has been an extra bonus for me to not only get to know my good friend Kent’s parents and siblings, but also so many in the extended Rathwell and Robinson families. Bruce & Dawn were also very valued customers of ours for many years. I am comforted in knowing they are now re-united together.
My Mom, Marilyn Heimrich, also wishes to pass on her sympathy at this time. She recalls a very nice visit with Bruce recently at Blue Water.
You all remain in our thoughts and prayers during this time.
R.I.P. Bruce.
Hugs to all;
Mark & Julie Heimrich, Sarah, Scott & Spencer, Marilyn Heimrich & staff at Lifetme Water Products.
Bruce will be sorely missed by everyone he touched in Life…

You are all in our thoughts.
Rest in peace, Bruce. You will be missed greatly.
With Love,
Beth, Paul and Emma
Kim I know we have chatted but I have had such a hard time finding the words to send to you and the rest of your family. When my mom moved into Bluewater Resthome in August following a massive stroke that changed her life forever, we were all heart broken and scared. She was actually terrified and crushed. But your dad, made her and in turn me, feel safe. He welcomed her like a big brother would . As you know she really struggles with speech now but your dad looked out for her. He always made sure everyone knew what she wanted in her tea, or if she needed help. He was positive and friendly and all of my family, with my mom truly enjoyed our conversations with Bruce.
When he was being taken to the hospital on his last day there, mom and I saw him in the hallway and of course we were worried. His last words to us were “don’t worry girls I’m just going on a little vacation.”
Enjoy your vacation Bruce. We will miss you. ❤️❤️
To The Rathwell Family,
Our sympathy on the loss of Bruce. Bruce was a great salesman, with a great smile..

Kim – So sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. My deepest sympathy to you and the rest of your family.
