O’SHEA: Charles Francis “Charlie” of Granton

Peacefully, at home on Fallon Drive, Granton, on Sunday, June 25, 2023, Charles Francis O’Shea passed into eternal rest at the age of 83. Born on June 11, 1940 at his parents’ home on Stonehouse Line, Granton, ON, Charlie was proud to say that he was the only person to have lived on all four sides of his country block. Together with his best friend and wife of almost 56 years, Mary Beth (McDonald), Charlie raised four children: Julia (Stephen VanSpall) of Delta, BC; Daniel (Heather Dickie) of London, ON; Paul (Kristen Moore) of Kitchener, ON; and Ryan (Jennifer Ross) of Lucan, ON. As the family grew, he became the beloved “Grampa Charlie” of eleven grandchildren: Brendan, Emily, Clare and Madeline VanSpall; Tara and Grace O’Shea; Dylan, Liam and Zachary O’Shea; and Lauren and Lily O’Shea.

Charlie grew up farming with his family on the “home farm” on Stonehouse, graduated from Ridgetown Agricultural College in 1959 and continued to pursue his love of agriculture by operating a beef feedlot on Hwy 23 for over thirty years. From there, he and Beth became co-owners of Green Valley Heating which allowed them to work as a team, meet many wonderful people, and travel across eastern Canada as well as to Europe until their retirement years.

As a man of faith, Charlie prayed daily and led grace before every meal. He attended Mass weekly and volunteered at St. Patrick Parish, Lucan on committees, as an usher and as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Even during his recent illness, Charlie held on to his trust in God, and received the Sacrament of Anointing in May.

Charlie was an innovative, hard-working and active man. In his retirement, he helped Ryan on his farm, enjoyed maintaining his lawns and gardens, spent time woodworking, and was the biggest fan of his grandchildren’s sporting events and other activities. He also loved watching hockey and baseball, and was thrilled to see “his” Leafs win the first round of play-offs this spring.

Charlie was predeceased by: his parents, James and Evelyn (Payton) O’Shea; his brother, Patrick O’Shea; his parents-in-law, Stewart and Dorothy (Nagle) McDonald; and his nephew, Matthew Porter. In addition to his wife, Beth, and their children and grandchildren, he is survived by: his brother, Michael O’Shea (Diane) of St. Marys, ON; three sisters, Monica (Alan) Porter, Anne (Victor) Zammit and Geraldine (Rex) McCoy, all of London, ON; brothers-in-law, John (Lorraine) McDonald of Chatham, ON and Robert (Polly) McDonald of London ON; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 223 Main Street, LUCAN on Wednesday, July 5th from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 PM. Prayers will be held in the funeral home at 6:30 PM. Registration for visitation is appreciated. Please click “Register Now” below to register.

Charlie’s Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 32922 Richmond Street, LUCAN on Thursday, July 6th at 11 AM. Interment St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery.

Stream the service live or at your convenience by visiting www.facebook.com/haskettfh.

Donations in Charlie’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Arthritis Society Canada.
