Condolence from Courtney on January 9th, 2017 8:34 PM

Today I learnt of the passing of Doug Miners, a coach of mine who I had in my teenage years for ringette. Although it’s been a few years since I have seen or talked to Doug, it still shocked me to hear of his passing.

Looking back now I can say that Doug was one of the most influential coaches I ever had. My first year with Doug was when I played AAA for Western ringette. At first I was scared of him but it didn’t take long before I realized he was a big teddy bear.

Doug wasn’t afraid to skate us to the ground if we deserved it (and we often did!)….he ran a tight ship and there’s more lessons I learnt from those years than I even realized back then. I also think I will remember every play from the play books on Doug’s team… my favorite still being the “oops!”

He helped me become the defenseman I am today and taught me the fine art of being aggressive without being dirty.

Ringette has lost one of the greats. Doug, you will not be forgotten. Thank you for everything. Rest In Peace.

Courtney Ludwig

Condolence from Ray&April Brien on January 9th, 2017 11:17 PM

Carol and family, so sad to learn of your loss of Doug. So many ringette memories come to mind on the ice, in the stands, on the bench, the bus rides, the motel room “team feasts”, on and on……not to mention some chats at the gas pumps. We sincerely express our sympathy at the loss of a “good guy” Ray and April Brien

Condolence from Sara on January 10th, 2017 8:07 AM

The loss of Doug is incredibly heartbreaking news. Doug coached me in four years and then again as my Western AAA coach. He was truly an amazing man and the best coach I ever had. He taught me so much about ringette, but more importantly about life and hard work; to never give up and to keep digging. I’ll always remember practice at Allman arena. We had just lose to the worst team in the league, so he brought out a garbage can (aka the puke bucket) and skated us for the entire practice. Needless to say, we won the next game and the next and the next. Now that I am a coach, I use that story with my girls and I don’t think they have had a bad game since!

Doug is someone I am grateful to have met, and will never forget. He will have a lasting impression on all of those lucky enough to have met his kind soul. To the family and friends of Doug, my deepest condolences. My thoughts and prayers are with you through the tough time.
