Carl’s life journey took him to many places through his love of travel. He had the privilege of using his talents and gifts to share with others, especially his family who he loved dearly. His favourite times were in his woodlot and making maple syrup. He enjoyed many pleasurable hours in his wood working shop. His love for music showed through his enjoyment when playing the bag pipes and violin. He touched many lives through his 35 year teaching career and the Outdoor Education Program he introduced at SHDHS. He was a devout member of Granton Masonic Lodge and Exeter United Church. He always lived life to the fullest.

A family service will be held this week, however visitation and the celebration of Carl’s life will be postponed until a more appropriate time, when family and friends are able to gather and share love, support and hugs.

Donations to the South Huron Hospital Foundation, Jessica’s House, London Scottish Rite Learning Centre, or Parkinson Canada would be appreciated by the family.

Jean and Family,
Please accept our very deepest sympathy in your loss of a wonderful person. Carl was always so friendly, so caring, so knowledgeable. He was always interested in each individual, no matter what was happening in his life, or what place you met him . People often would ask Ray and I if we were related to Carl and you. We would always smile and say no, but we know them well, especially Ray who knew him from his early years on. Carl will be missed. However he has left a wonderful legacy through his children and grandchildren. The many memories that people have of him will help him live on in spirit. God Bless.

Condolence from Danny (Shoe) Shoebottom on March 14th, 2020 2:36 PM

To Jean and the family of Carl, my prayers are given in memory of such a profound mentor and friend. I had the privilege of being a student at South Huron with Carl guiding myself to be the best that I could be. As a charter member of the Outdoor Education Program (out trippers) started by Carl it opened my eyes to working with youth and the appreciation of our great outdoors. A 30 year career in Forestry, 20+ years in scouting and 45 years of community service with my municipal fire department all have the influence of Carl ingrained in them. Thank you Carl.
In the past year I also had the honor of playing the violin that Carl made and playing with the band at Carl’s 90th birthday celebration. Unfortunately I will not be able to join with you Jean and family, in the celebration of Carl’s life, but know I will be there in spirit . God’s Blessing be upon you. Danny Shoebottom (SHOE)

We want to extend our condolences with you. Carl & I were often together during our childhood days. Our parents were always the best of friends and I also knew his parents well. Carl and I are the same age. I too had my 90th birthday recently – and a party in Goderich. I well remember Carl and I dancing together when we were kids. Our parents were at someone’s home where there was a dance in the living room as was often the case in the country. Carl and I were very popular as we danced the two-step. Over the years we would see each other and have a chat. It is hard for me to realize he is gone. – my sympathy especially to you Jean. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.

Condolence from Dave MacLeod on March 15th, 2020 9:49 AM

I’m sorry to hear that Carl has passed away. I first met Carl when he would come in to SHDHS to play bagpipes at our Remembrance Day observances. He also had a sugar bush, and put his maple syrup into 40 ounce booze bottles which he recycled for that purpose. I still remember Jean Mason having a number of bottles of Carl’s maple syrup behind her desk for the staff – maple syrup looks remarkably similar to rye, and when it’s in a recycled booze bottle the effect is convincing. Carl and I really connected when we discovered we were both Masons, and I remember when he joined the Scottish Rite. Carl was an enthusiastic volunteer with the London Consistory Club – I saw him just last Wednesday at our annual volunteer luncheon. In our lives we may be blessed to cross paths with some very fine people, and Carl was certainly one of those people. My sincere condolences to your entire family.

The picture of Carl is so good that it makes me want to smile back! We had years of friendship together going back to the times at SHDHS when he and Ken were on the staff , when I played the organ for his three daughters’ weddings, and when the four of us travelled through Scotland and in his kilts, he played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes in the hills at Tongue. Such wonderful memories! And he died almost 5 weeks after I lost my precious husband, Ken. I had hoped to visit you both after my move back to Goderich.
I extend deepest sympathy to all the family .May your memories sustain you!

With love,
Lois .

So saddened to hear of Carl’s passing. He was a special person – my grade 7 teacher at EPS as well as my geography teacher at SHDHS. His rendition of the “Three Pittle Ligs” was always fun (I still remember some of the lines!); our children spent time with him at his sugar bush on the Riddell farm. Woodworking and bagpipes were special talents he possessed (we have some of his woodworking – a mirror and a book rack). Our families have been good friends for a long time – especially Carl and my Mom who were teaching colleagues at EPS for many years. Our sincere condolences.

Though we only spent a few occasions with Grandpa Carl, they were especially memorable in great part because of his warmth and kindness, his sense of humour, and his quintessential “wink and grin.” His story is remarkable and his community legacy is inspiring. Our sincere condolences to Grandma Jean, Gwen, Alyshia, Neil and family. Wishing you all an uplifting Celebration of Life. We will always remember him fondly. With love from Irina and Jon.

Condolence from Harold & Aileen Burgin on March 17th, 2020 9:13 PM

Our sincere condolences go to the whole Mills family. We still remember the sounds of the pipes as they made their way eastward from the village towards our residence and then faded as the piper turned westward and back to his residence in Kirkton. Harold remembers the early days of the Outdoor Ed program Carl started at South Huron: the winter weekend camp in Auburn – climbing up the barn wall , sleeping overnight in the plastic tubes we made +our early attempts at cross-country skiing. He was a remarkable man who shared unselfishly his knowledge and enthusiasm.

Condolence from Bernice Guiler on March 17th, 2020 9:22 PM

Condolence from Cathy Amos Taylor on March 18th, 2020 8:07 AM

I grew up in Kirkton during the time Carl was learning to play the bagpipes-which I love. He would walk around the block with a small instrument, but no pipes and bag. It wasn’t great at first, but improved and often saw him marching in parades with bands. Spoke to Carl and Jean not that long ago and both were as gracious and kind as ever. Cathy Amos Taylor

We recently returned home from Jamaica and learned that Carl had passed earlier in March. We are so very sorry and sad for your loss, we enjoyed so much visiting with yourself, Carl and Gwen in the fall at Carol & Gerald’s anniversary party in Auburn.

Carl had that special twinkle in his eye, it made each person he met feel very special.
