McMILLAN: Betty of London, formerly of Denfield

This is my Mom and today I’m going to tell you something about her. How do you find the words to describe a person who loved with everything in her? Her life was full and she was always busy, but never too busy for her grandkids. She said to me once “you always love your kids, your heart beats for them, but when you have grandkids…it’s like something I’ve never felt before. They are so amazing and the love is beyond anything I’ve felt before.”

She spent her life teaching and she was GOOD at it! She touched a huge number of lives over her 30+ years of teaching elementary school. But the love of helping others didn’t just stop in the classroom. It’s almost like she thrived on helping others, bringing people together, and making sure everyone was ok. If she found out you had a problem? Well, Mom would obsess about it, analyse it and do everything in her power to solve it.  The next time you have a chance to do something kind for someone…do it! And then whisper “this ones for you Betty.” Mom has a huge faith and lived her life knowing there was another party going on that she had yet to attend. Here with us, SHE was the one that pulled everyone together, she was the one who loved to look around a room and see people laughing, joking around and telling stories. The laughter that’s happening now in the big hall will be felt here in our hearts. Between Uncle Norman and Uncle Donald, her sides will be aching for months. Oh how happy she will be to see her Mom and Dad again. She truly believed that if you spoke a person’s name or told their story that they would never really be gone from your life. Her life will be so very honoured by telling her stories, again and again, so that her grandkids will always know her BIG love, and her vibrant and classy persona. We could not contain that love any longer. Mom passed away on February 7, 2021. She has much work to do. After the party of course.

Mom never did anything 50%. It was all-in or nothing. With her love of her family and friends in mind, there will be a wonderful, full-of-life gathering at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Haskett Funeral Home, Lucan (519-227-4211).

In lieu of flowers her son and daughter, Scott Shoebottom and Rebecca (Shearer) would be honoured to have you remember their Mom with a donation to St. Marys Community Living. An organization that gave her much peace-of-mind when it came to the life and wellbeing of her Grandson.

Becky, Scott and family.
My sincere condolences on your mom’s passing.
I met Betty in October 2013, when I began ministry at Colborne Street United. She was warm, caring, friendly and it was like we had known each other for years.
Her faith shone through in her upbeat, positive attitude and smile, despite whatever health concerns she was facing. Her love for, and devotion to you and especially her grandchildren was so easy to see.
We had a number of lovely visit in her home and at least one luncheon.
Like her scrapbooking recorded memories, I pray that you will find comfort in the memories you will cherish for a lifetime.
Blessings
Diane

Condolence from Sonja van de Hoef-Fraser on February 10th, 2021 9:08 AM

Dear Rebecca and Scott,

Your Mom, as you described, was vibrant! My sweet memories while working at Colborne was of your Mom bringing a grandchild to our music program. Her dedication in doing this spoke volumes to who Betty was. She celebrated people! When she learned of my wedding a few years back she blessed us with a beautiful gift of a quilt centre piece for our table. In the card she said, “I’ve never done this before it’s not my best work…” well, it is beautiful and even the box, which she wrapped and put it in was stunning!!! It is proudly on display on our living room table, for it’s not just the quilt top…she wove together a Dutch windmill with a Scottish thistle (my husband’s ancestry). Her skill of sewing was lovely, but it’s the thought she put into it. It is a treasured gift, as your Mom was. May God’s Spirit of Comfort surround you all through this time. – Sonja

So sorry to hear of your mom’s passing, Betty was a talented seamstress – she made the best Halloween costumes and a great neighbour to us growing up. Memories of refinishing woodwork one summer & admiring her beautiful blue velvet furniture in another room was an inspiration in design as well. I think she taught us the “hitchhiker” dance at Oxbow. Betty was a blessing in my life. She and I were in so many activities together. She introduced me to CCAA which turned my life around! We went to many paper and card classes and of course, Art Journalling. When I lost my sight she drove me and kept my spirits positive. We had such fun and shared laughter!
I was blessed to meet and spend time. With Becky’s children. She loved those kids beyond measure! Our Monday classes brought me up to date of who slept over and what they did. I mentally adopted them as I had none of my own visiting.
I am blessed to have known her! She was just ahead of me in high school. Our daughters were both Becky. It goes on and on how our lives intertwined. I loved her and think, I will have to remember that for Betty! Her death was a shock to me ..she was always busy, busy, busy. We often joked she needed a class on how to incorporate rest periods into her life! She said she did not have time for it!
We both drove Ford Eacapes, used the same walkers at CCAA and both loved our teacher Debbie! Miss your energy Betty!!!
Thank you Betty for so much.

Our relationship started with a double date to dancing at Lakeside. Betty was a joy to know and we always had fun. And later I saw Betty at Cherryhill mall where I worked at the time. Betty was not only beautiful appearing but a beautiful person inside. I was privileged to know her and hear about her school adventures as a teacher. She was a real role model and truly loved her family. Some people you never forget. Betty was one for me.
