MCGLYNN: Margaret “Joan” (Tiffin) formerly of Lucan, Belfast (Lucknow) and Kitchener-Waterloo

It is with great sadness that the family of Joan (Tiffin) McGlynn, 80, announce her peaceful passing, surrounded by family at McCormick Home in London on December 13, 2024. Cherished wife of the late Dave McGlynn (2020) of over 43 years. Proud mom of Wayne (Meghan) and Janet (James Riehl) McGlynn. Sister and sister-in-law of Shirley Snowden, Joe Tiffin Jr., Doris Sachs, Ruth and Bob Gooding, Juanita McGlynn, Mary McGlynn, and Fran McGlynn as well as extended family and friends. Predeceased by her parents Joseph and Marian (Wallace) Tiffin, and brother-in-law Bill Snowden.

Born in Wingham, ‘Joan’ grew up on the family farm and attended a one-room schoolhouse in Kinloss Township. A keen student, she skipped a grade and graduated with high honours from F.E. Madill High School. Joan completed the Royal Conservatory of Music Certificate with her instrument of choice, the piano. Her musical carrier started when she began subbing-in for her aunt or mother in the original family band ‘Tiffin’s Orchestra’, playing alongside her father and uncle while the next generation of family musicians were raised.

In 1963, Joan began her professional career as a Stenographer at the Bank of Montreal in Teeswater, leveling up to Assistant Administration Officer prior to 1976. Concurrently, the family band evolved to encompass her siblings, playing nearly every weekend across Southwestern Ontario.

Joan married her life-long partner Dave on January 15th, 1977, and moved to Kitchener, continuing her career at the bank as an Assistant Accountant until 1979. Within this time, Joan, and husband Dave, welcomed their son, Wayne, and daughter, Janet, in May ‘78 and April ’79, consecutively. Come 1981, Joan shifted her academic skills to support the growing family business, ‘McGlynn Plumbing’. She was a vital part of the business venture for over 30 years. Joan, an exceptional multi-tasker, advocate for change, loved embracing new experiences, yet always respected her roots.

She was hands-on, an exceptional cook, had a knack for baking, grew luscious gardens, canned preserves, and poured all her heart into raising their children. She learned to stepdance, volunteered at the YMCA, and continued to play with the family band until 2002, after which she played piano with the band ‘Country Motion’. Her musical interest made her heart beat strong and in between times she turned the dial to Country radio. She camped and cruised with family, loved to dance to a good ole waltz, fox-trot, or polka, was witty, enjoyed a good laugh, and attending social events.

She worked numerous part-time jobs, including Central Fresh Market in Kitchener, Foodland and Home Hardware in Lucknow, and retired in Belfast (ON) in 2012. She kept those home fires burning (first as a cottage since 1986), before her family built the permanent home in 2004. Joan and Dave, alongside ‘Chaos’ their cherished kitty, moved to Lucan in 2015, after which she created a whole new life for herself in 2020 at McCormick Home, in London. Joan was a fun-loving talented soul who will live-on in our hearts forever.

Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 223 Main Street, LUCAN on Friday, December 27th from 10 – 11:30 AM, with Joan’s funeral service at 12-noon. We will also honour her husband, Dave McGlynn, being 2020 didn’t allow the opportunity to celebrate his life. Together they reunite.

Stream the service live or at your convenience by visiting www.facebook.com/haskettfh

Donations to the Parkinson’s Society, McCormick Care Foundation, or Animalert would be appreciated in Joan’s memory.

My Condolences to Janet & Jamie, Wayne & Meghan so Sorry to hear of your Mother Joan’s passing. I got to know her when she moved to Lucan and I did her hair, she was a very special lady although quiet she didn’t have much to say but when she mentioned her family she would smile with pride and so much love 💕 I remember her trying new hair cuts, she wanted to be in style, coloring parts of her hair pink or purple for different occasions. She would tell me Janet would like it and she’d be right. She struggled with Parkinson but thst didn’t stop her she would get her walker and walk down to my shop rain or shine even snow until it got to much for her, such determination and having her independence.
Love you Joan RIP no more pain and suffering you are now with your husband together again❤️

Condolence from Tracey Kwan on December 18th, 2024 3:04 PM

Dear Wayne and Meghan and Janet and Jamie:

So sorry that your mother had to experience the same illness in her later years as my father did before her.
I was impressed by your mother’s many talents. We did have a piano at the cottage at one time and would hear her play it from time to time. Uncle Dave was lucky to have such a smart and talented wife. So glad that we have become closer over the years and I am sure our friendship will grow even more going forward. Your Cousin, Tracey Kwan

Janet,

So very sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. Seeing her picture, I do remember her. The name of your parents was so familiar to me. This is a beautiful tribute to your Mom. She, sounds like a proud woman who lived a full life. She can rest in peace along with your Dad.
I’m so grateful our paths crossed over a “Picasso” jacket. You’ll be in my thoughts, Janet.

To the entire McGlynn family I offer my deepest condolences for your loss.
I am deeply saddened and this is my loss also. I had the immense pleasure of taking care of Joan daily for the years she lived at McCormick Home. We shared many laughs and stories in our time together and I will be forever grateful to have been entrusted by not only Joan but her family when at a time where it is difficult to be separated from your loved ones. Your trust and belief in me makes me proud. And the love of my Momma will be held close forever. Rest in the sweetest of peace !

Joan was a great lady. I enjoyed working with Joan and Dave to find them a home closer to London finally settling in Lucan in their lovely ranch. Condolence from George Conn on December 20th, 2024 2:53 PM

It was with great sadness that I learned that my former neighbour and school friend has left us. We have been separated by distance and careers for many years but I shall always remember Joan and her family who lived just up the road from me. She and I were in a way rivals at who would play the morning hymn or God Save the Queen at SS#10 Kinloss. Later, we travelled together each morning in the little bus from Whitechurch that carried us to Wingham HIgh School. May she rest in peace.

Cuz Janet and Wayne,
It is not suppose to be easy loosing the ones we love, especially a parent.
Aunt Joan was such a giving person and her smile and laugh is what I remember so fondly. ( among so many wonderful things )
We are blessed to have the memories of good people who have made such an impact in our lives.
Celebrate today, all we know is now.

I had to read this twice to understand who Joan was. I knew Joe and Arian for years as I played ball for him and my mom and dad as well. I knew David from SS #2 school. My sympathies to the family
