Passed away peacefully with his loving wife and daughters by his side at West Perth Village on Friday, May 22, 2026 at the age of 83. Beloved husband of Sheila (Chartrand) McCowan for 31 years. Cherished father of Michelle and Steve Jefferson, and Kelly and Kevin Edwards. Adored papa of Jessica and Tommy, Greg and Christine; Tristan, and Logan and great-papa of Jace, Jayden; Hallie, Cooper, and Blair. His family circle also included his treasured furry companions, Ellie and Jasmine. Dear brother-in-law of Leta McCowan, and Fred Stevenson. Fondly remembered by Sheila’s children, his many nieces, nephews and the extended McCowan, Alexander and Chartrand families. Predeceased by his late wife Mercedes (Alexander) McCowan, granddaughter Kelsey Lynn Edwards, siblings and their spouses, Robert and Joy McCowan, John “Jack” McCowan, Kaye Stevenson and his parents Peter Sr. and Isabel (Eaton) McCowan.
Peter was a quiet and kind-hearted man whose family meant everything to him. Raised on a small farm outside of Seaforth, he was known for his generous and quiet nature. Peter had a lifelong passion for toy tractors and their restoration, a hobby he began at just 13 years old and enjoyed throughout his life. He spent countless hours restoring tractors and preparing for toy shows, taking great pride in sharing his collection with others. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family, especially watching the children grow, holding his grandchildren in his arms, and being a part of their lives. He also cherished the many hours spent with his best friend and son-in-law, Steve. Peter will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
A private family funeral service will be held at a later date. Private interment at Maitlandbank Cemetery.
A celebration of Peter’s life will be held at the Seaforth Legion, 123 Main Street, SEAFORTH on Saturday, June 6th from 1 – 3 PM.
Donations to Seaforth & District Food bank would be appreciated by the family.

I’m very sorry to read of Peter’s passing. I have very fond memories as a young Londoner visiting the McCowan farm across the Maitland from my grandparents’ small property at Roxborough. My grandmother was a McCowan, a sister of Duncan, the grandfather of brothers Bob, Jack, and Pete, with whom I happily played when my parents took me north to “the farm”.
These happy days were back in the 1940s, and I have always remembered the McCowan family’s hospitality and kindness.
My sincere condolences to Peter’s family. May faith, family & friends be your comfort. Peter was my Mother Lenore’s first cousin.
Please know that we are sending our deepest condolences at this time. Peter and the entire McCowan family were part of my childhood memories growing up in Roxborough.
So sorry to hear. His passing will be missed, may you find comfort and solace in your times spent together and all the memories that go with that.
