MCCOMB: Erin of Lucan

Posted By Haskett Funeral Homes On February 2, 2019 @ 12:10 PM In Lucan,Obituary | 143 Comments

MCCOMB: Erin of Lucan

Suddenly, as the result of an automobile accident on Friday, February 1, 2019 of Lucan at the age of 50.  Loving husband of Jane (Thompson) McComb for 28 years.  Cherished father of Nicole McComb and Shane Ellis of London and Steve McComb of Lucan.  Dear son-in-law of Donna (Bullock) and Russ Thompson of Lucan.  Dear brother and brother-in-law of Brian and Sarah McComb of Lucan, Darrell  and Penny McComb of Mt. Brydges, Shawn and Lisa McComb of Milwalkee, Sandra McComb of Mitchell, Jim and Debby Thompson of Burlington, and Jean and Mark Wright of St. Marys.  Predeceased by his parents Aleda and Donald McComb and a brother Kevin McComb.  Fondly remembered by many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.   Erin was a selfless individual.  He was always giving his free time to his family, his friends and his church.  He was a hard worker that was passionate about his career.  A special thank you to the Lucan Biddulph first responders for their care and compassion on Friday morning.

Visitation will be held at the Haskett Funeral Home, 223 Main Street, LUCAN, on MondayFebruary 4th from 5-9 PM and again one hour prior to the funeral service that will be held on Tuesday, February 5th at Living Hope Church, 120 Main Street, Lucan at 11 AM with Pastor Brad Sumner officiating.

Donations to the Living Hope Church or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

So God Made our Brother

When Erin was born, I can remember him on the changing table. His older brother Darrell and I we’re taking care of him one night.  He came into this world with a shining smile, which was simply a delight.

  • So God made our brother.

He played with us, worked with us, and grew up with us in our tightly knit farm family. And he shared a unique connection with us all. He was the baby of the family, and exactly 14 years younger than our oldest brother to the day.

We taught him how to ride a bike, brush a horse, show a steer, drive a tractor, and truck. He was quick to learn and handled things with general care.  We may have fought with him, but I can’t remember it ever.

  • So God help us raise our brother.

He knew the importance of helping others, sacrificing his time every step of the way, and lending his talents freely… He helped his mother to construct her dream addition to her house, yet never asked to be paid.  He loved serving those who he worked for – the residents at the senior home until just last week. He helped them in their late stages of life, to assure they enjoyed every day…

  • So God made a Man out of our brother.

He was humble, kind, fair, and honest, committed, and never held a grudge.  His temperament was calm, and he often chuckled about the trials and journeys in life. He got a kick out of other’s actions, and their decisions in a humorous way.

  • So God made Man of Character, out of our brother.

He was a devoted and loving husband, through thick and thin, and through the ups and downs he put Jane first and supported her all along the way.

  • So God made a Husband out of our brother.

He was a devoted father being highly engaged with his kid’s activities, teaching them the virtues, values and lessons of life. Spending days, months and years supporting Nicole’s passion for showing horses, and Steven’s passion for hockey.

  • So God made a Father, out of our brother.

He developed a strong relationship with the Lord going through life. His faith grew deeper as the years went by. He was involved with church, its members and leaders became his close friends.

  • So He made a Man of God, out of our brother.

This past week God was ready for our brother – as fast as it was. He’d raised him, groomed him, put him through the trials of life – yet God had a plan for him at the end of his earthly life.

  • So God looked down on the earth and called our brother home… to eternal life.

Today, Erin looks down us with that smiling grin, a chuck and a laugh knowing that his time on earth was full to the brim.

We love you Erin.  And until we meet again … God bless you!!

Your brothers,

Shawn, Darrell and Brian

Condolence from Janice Corbett on February 2nd, 2019 2:31 PM

I remember Erin from Saugeen Valley Nursing Center in Mount Forest. Erin was a very kind person, always cheerfully going about his work, and taking time to chat with the residents. He was very proud of his background. I asked him once about why he lived so far away from his work, and his answer was that he could relax and listen to his Christian music on his way, and, Lucan was home with his family. He sang a hymn with me one day when i was playing the piano, and he was hard at work. He had a big job to do, always at someones beck and call, but he did it without complaint, and often with ingenuity. He was always ready to talk with me about the Black Donnelly’s, a common interest.
His passing leaves a big hole. I am sad for you, his family and friends, church family and everyone his life touched. Erin is at rest and can now sing a new song to the Lord. Blessings,
Jan Corbett

Jane and family,

My condolences to the family during this time and the days to come, as the void of the loss of Erin is surely huge. I knew Erin through his dedication to his work at Saugeen Valley Nursing Centre. He gave his heart and soul to everyone and everything at Saugeen Valley. The residents, staff and leadership team are devastated by this tragedy. We will all miss Erin; his smiling face, his jokes, his laugh, his lunch break conversations, his concern for everyone, the extra mile he always went, his willingness and cheerfulness to do any work…even the dirtiest of jobs. This list could go on and on. Erin professed his faith openly and showed his love for God and people through everything he did. Heaven has welcomed a new angel. It is my hope that we would all carry Erin’s example of love forward.

Condolence from Virginia Greenaway on February 3rd, 2019 2:12 AM

Dear Jane and family. Please know our many tears, prayers and thoughts are with you all each moment. I, like many staff and residents here at Saugeen Valley Nuring Centre are crying, and grieving a lot for your loss of an amazing man. Erin was the heart of the home touching so many lives with selfless compass and God grace. There was so many things he had to fix at our old building but he would always go beyond what his job really outlined… dressing up like Santa for staff and residents parties, getting pied in the face for fundraisers, cutting out tons of wooden pieces for toys for residents to paint and give away, staying late to make the new Nursing Home safe, comfortable and a beautiful place to call home for all of us. If you were to walk by his door at work you could here Praise music coming from his office, if you went in the room you would find a bible and devotionals for others to take.
Please know you all are apart of our lives because he talked about you often Nicole and Steven. When you can please come and visit staff and residents for more hugs and a tour of Erin’s work.
We miss you so much Erin, so much. Love residents and staff of now Strathcona Long Term Care Home in Mount Forest.

To the McComb family – sincerest condolences on the passing of Erin. Our hearts go out to you, and we keep you in our prayers. At Strathcona Village, we have counted on Erin as our maintenance person, liaison to the owners, security company, and most of all, our friend. No matter what was asked, Erin would always be there to help. He came to our social gatherings, supplying tents against the hot sun, or home made cookies in the cooler weather. He touched all of our lives, in many different ways, and his passing has left a huge empty space in our community

Condolence from Dianne McComb on February 4th, 2019 11:52 AM

The McComb brother’s were always a part of my life growing up, with our mother’s being sisters and our father’s first cousins, we were solidly related but much more than that we were family. They were people that were there to share joys and sorrows. Each with out reservation or hesitation. If you needed help or support they were there.
Kevin’s passing was a loss but not unexpected. He had struggled through illness and that he survived was a testament to his faith and the love of his family.
Erin’s death was shocking and heartbreaking. He was both too young and it was totally unexpected. There was no time to prepare or have the final occasion to catch up. I will remember Erin as a man who was earnest and caring. There was often a small smile on his face as he listen to conversation. He had occasion to speak with my daughter Jillian that encouraged her to follow her dreams and head to BC were she has found her calling in culinary. Those moments and memories to recall.
He loved his wife and kids and I think of them as they go through the next days, weeks and time without him. I know that they will be supported by Erin’s brothers and families, by the community of family and friends. I hope that they can reach out when they have need to. My thoughts will be with you.

Condolence from Vicki, Dave, Jacob and Mackenzie Hayter on February 7th, 2019 2:33 PM

Dear Jane, Steven, Nicole , Shane and Families:

Your ‘Erin’ was such a unique and caring neighbour and friend. From his many check ins on our garage door status (through a careful assessment of whether another set of springs might just be needed to help it get through another winter vs the burden of purchasing a brand new door), to his big wave out front on his way to church every Sunday walking with such purpose with those cowboy boots, to asking if “I got all the weeds” on our front lawn, to helping me reconstruct our new tent structure in the back yard which he watched it be catapulted across the neighbour’s lawn with the vicious wind (and he with his arms crossed, carefully suggesting that might not be the type of outdoor shelter I might want after all). Erin was honest but caring, direct but diplomatic and so very much in tuned with how you may have been feeling that particular day as he stopped to offer yet another encouraging word. We will all miss his one-of-a-kind way to make you never feel like a number – but rather a very important person and family. I wish I had spent even just one more time in those conversations to truly appreciate his candor and infectious laugh. Our deepest condolences to you all.
