MATZOLD: Erich Walter of Seaforth

Erich Walter Matzold passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2020, in his 94 year. Born in Pausa, Vogtland, Germany, Erich was the son of Oskar and Frieda (née Grunler) Matzold.

Erich is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Joyce, his son Wayne (Denise) Matzold, grandchildren Nathan Matzold, Nicole French and her children Sidney and Kyle. Erich will also be lovingly remembered by Joyce’s children Tom (Lea), Marilyn (Jim), Cindy,  Deborah (Dan), Bill (Cherie) and their families. Surviving family in Germany includes Erich’s older brother Heinz (Marga) and several nieces, nephews and their families.

Erich is predeceased by his first wife Lillian (1996), their daughter Melannie (2000), his sisters Hilda and Melannie and step daughter Maureen.

Erich remained in England after World War 2 where he met Lillian. They settled in Cornwall where Melannie was born in 1951. Erich and his family immigrated to Canada from England in 1957 and settled in Seaforth in 1959. After Lillian’s passing, Erich met the second love of his life and he and Joyce enjoyed travel adventures together, including a honeymoon to Australia and New Zealand.

Erich was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a skilled bowler – at both the bowling alley and the lawn bowling greens. Later in life, he and Joyce enjoyed shuffle boarding and during the winter months a weekly pool day with the “guys” was a highlight.

Haskett Funeral Home, 87 Goderich Street West, Seaforth are entrusted with arrangements. Honouring Erich’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held. Inurnment will take place in Harpurhey Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Saint Elizabeth Health Care would be appreciated by the family.

Condolence from Denise Carnochan on June 1st, 2020 6:30 PM

I had the pleasure of being Erich’s next door neighbour for my first ten years of life. He was a grandfather to my sisters and I; I have so many wonderful memories – planting gardens, picking raspberries, and putting on ‘shows’ for Erich and Lillian – they were such great sports!! Throughout the years we would run into each other here or there and catch up. We are grateful to have known and loved this wonderful man.

My deepest sympathy to Joyce and the family.

Denise (Carnochan) Van Amersfoort

We hit the jackpot when we became Erich and Lillian’s neighbour. Such a gentle caring man who became an instant grandfather to our kids as they came along in Harpurhey. He always had time to listen to them and show they how things grow. His wonderful smile will be missed. Deepest sympathy to Joyce, Wayne and Denise and to Nicole and family. We have wonderful memories of Erich.

Joyce and Erich
Having been next door neighbours for some 24 years, we grew to admire and love Joyce and Erich, Joyce for her endless energy and Erich for his wonderful smile and sense of humour. Although Erich loved fishing he was no longer able to do so, so when we went trout fishing we would bring him some, and share fishing stories. We love you Erich and will miss you for the rest of our lives, Rest In Peace dear friend.

Condolence from Francis and Carol Hunt on June 2nd, 2020 10:43 AM

We are sorry to hear of Erich’s passing. About 1960 Erich, Lillian and Melannie came to live in the upstairs apartment of Frank, and Isabelle Hunt’s home. This was the start of a lifelong, special friendship that continued when they moved to their new home in Harpurhey. We were pleased to have them at our wedding in 1963. We always enjoyed, and of late have missed, Erich’s jovial greeting when we met he and Joyce at church or Foodland. We offer our sympathy.

Condolence from Jim Crocker on June 2nd, 2020 11:38 AM

I was so saddened to hear of Erick’s passing. We shared many a morning sharing a blind hunting ducks. He did have a challenge with wood ducks often stating after a miss “those doggone woodies fly too fast”
Eric was a delightful, kind human being and I know he will be greatly missed in Seaforth.
