Mr. Mansfield taught ‘us’ in grades 4, 5 and 6 at Hensall Public School( 1962-1965) . I have often contemplated why any sane individual would do this and came up with the idea that he just wanted to parent an extra 30 or so pre-teen kids. You see, he didn’t just teach us from September through June, but also ran the village’s summer recreation program. What was he thinking? :)

I do not doubt that his guidance helped many to hone their language/writing skills and in others instilled the desire to pass. It was not a unique situation, considering one-room school houses still existed, but a curious one. I am sure he had options and yet he chose to stick with us…go figure?

We did not study French, as a subject in public school. back in the day, but I still fondly recall his recitation of “De Ol’ Stovepipe ‘ole.” I believe his teaching fostered a love of languages for me and for others. English, Latin and French were amongst my ‘best’ subjects in high school and I believe I have Mr. Mansfield to thank for that.

As part of our church family and through Jerry’s involvement in Lodge, we saw Eleanor and Eric often. I can’t help but think that he still assumed a parenting role towards his former students. :)

Our sincere condolences to Eric’s family…wishing you all fond memories and peace.

Dear Paul,
So sorry to hear of your dad’s passing.
Memories of French Class, and more recently, ice cream in Bayfield come to mind when thinking of your dad at this difficult time. Teaching kids a second language had to have been difficult at times, no question about it. Mr. Mansfield taught with passion, dedication and precise enunciation during every class. Stand proud in knowing he was one of those teachers this student never forgot.
