LAPORTE: Phil of Zurich

LAPORTE: Phil of Zurich

Our beloved Philip Andre Laporte died March 15, 2025, at the age of 75, working in the shed as he loved to do. Phil is loved by his family and he treasured his family reunions at the Laporte homestead.  He lovingly built a family picture display so that everyone felt welcome, and he was proud of the historical family photos on display at the St. Peter’s Parish hall.   He is greatly missed by his wife, Patty (Ratcliffe) and they would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in May.   He loved his children, Jacqui (John) Empson, Jody (Tanya Bedard), Michael (Gillian Spears) and Matthew.  He loved his furry buddy, Max.  He was very proud of all his grandchildren too – Logan Forbes (Phaedra Scott), Luke Forbes (Alison Terpstra) and Ryan Forbes, (Hannah Kelly), Madalyn and Noelle Laporte and Quentin and Cooper Laporte.

He is loved by his siblings Sister Bernadette Laporte, Tony Laporte, Bridget Overholt, Marie and Tony Denomme, Angela Watson, and in-laws Marie Laporte, Paula Laporte, Lillian Laporte, Bill and Dianne Ratcliffe, Sheila and Richard Byers, Laura and Lauch Harrison, Helen and Gord Olmstead, and Paul Ratcliffe.   He is predeceased by his beloved parents Noel and Rena (Ducharme), brothers Charlie, John and Isidore, and in-laws Paul Watson, Leo Overholt, Cathy Laporte, Rachelle Laporte, and Mary Laporte.

Phil was very strong in his faith, and he was very involved in his church. He passed on his passion for volunteering to his family, and demonstrated it through his involvement in his community.  Phil and Patty kept the records for the St. Peter’s church cemetery for decades.  In times of grief, Phil and Patty comforted many families and we draw on their example today.  He loved the Breakfast in the Park and was active in the planning for the St. Brother Andre celebrations.   He was a 3rd and 4th degree at the Knights of Columbus.   In 2013, he was celebrated as a Man of Integrity by the Huron County Domestic Assault Review Team – a distinction that we are all immensely proud of.

Phil instilled a strong work ethic in his family.  He worked at Dashwood Industries , and later established a long career at the Ontario Clean Water Agency.   Upon retiring from OCWA, he enjoyed working a few fun years with his friends at Bluewater Windows and Doors.  He enjoyed construction and carpentry his entire life.  In his early years, he built homes in St. Joseph with his brothers, and most recently, he loved making his birdhouses and seasonal décor.

Phil was an expert gardener, using creative ways to grow his impressive vegetable crop. If he could reuse something to make the veggies grow, he would.  He was an environmentalist throughout his life. He reforested the property, and with Patty’s support, enjoyed feeding the birds, squirrels, and other wildlife that came to visit.

Phil enjoyed an amazing social life with his friends.  He played baseball for many years for the Bluewater Lakers and Stanley Dreamers.   He looked forward to his weekly card games and his annual fishing trips up north.  He loved to chat with the family about the latest Blue Jays games.  Phil enjoyed the many games of Pepper with his family and friends, and it brings us comfort thinking of him joining his parents (Noel and Rena) and his brothers to play another rambunctious round.

Visitation will be held at the St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Parish Hall, 73334 Bluewater Highway, Zurich (St. Joseph) on Tuesday, March 18 from 6-9 PM and again one hour prior to the funeral mass on Wednesday, March 19 at 11 AM in the St. Peter Roman Catholic Church with Father Vince Gulikers presiding. Parish prayers will be held Wednesday morning at 9:30 AM. Cremation with interment St. Peter Roman Catholic Cemetery, St. Joseph.  Haskett Funeral Home, ZURICH entrusted with arrangements.

Donations to St. Andre Healing Garden (cheques made payable to St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church) or Victim Services Huron Perth would be appreciated by the family.

“You don’t know what you’ve got till he’s gone.”
Phil’s sudden death provokes a pause and reflection on who we have lost and what he means to us.
I have always thought of Phil as someone who descended from rugged French fur traders. When I first met him, I asked how many push-ups he could do. Fifty was his answer. I felt anaemic!
I was also amazed by his gentle nature and quiet demeanour. Phil lived a life of steadfast family and community support. What a great brother-in-law, father, and community member.
Phil added deep strength to the lives he touched. Phil, we will miss you.

Condolence from Janet and Frank Winters on October 8th, 2025 4:11 AM

Dear Jodi and family,
While adding your beautiful landscaping to our home on the lake, you shared many stories of growing up at the lake and swimming right there on the beach. Your dad was a sweetheart. He offered us a parking spot at his house if we could not get down Shangrilla during a wind storm. I always loved seeing his newest lighthouse or birdhouse creations. It is very dark along highway 21 and your parents always had the beautiful lighthouse lights at the end of the driveway. They were the best marker to let us know we had reached our road. It’s nice to hear your love of gardening came from your dad. Big hugs to you and your entire family. Your dad was a lovely man and made this a brighter world with not only his personality and smile but his beautiful lighthouses.
