LANGFORD: Alma M. C. (Trewartha) of Collingwood, and formerly of Exeter and Blanshard Township

With sadness but in appreciation and celebration of a life well and truly lived, we announce the death of our mother at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital on June 27, 2014, in her 95th year. Born on December 24, 1919 in Goderich Township near Holmesville to Edgar and Ethel (Gliddon), Alma pursued her education in Clinton Secondary School and Stratford Normal School, accepting her first teaching position in Woodham from 1940 to 1944.  Alma married Kenneth Langford on June 3 of 1944, becoming a home-maker as well as a partner in the work and business of running the family farm, and raised three sons with Ken.  She also contributed to Woodham United Church and the larger community, teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, and leading groups such as CGIT and WMS. Alma moved to Exeter following Ken’s death in 1978.  She became fully engaged in her new community as a member of Exeter United Church (choir member, board member, UCW leader, delegate to presbytery and conference), as a volunteer (South Huron Association for the Mentally Handicapped, Adult Literacy, Exeter Hospital Auxiliary, Exeter Villa, Dining for Seniors), as a capable and entertaining speaker and MC, and as a friend of many.  She was honoured with a Provincial Life Membership from the Hospital Auxiliary in 2006.  Alma enjoyed visiting her much-loved grandchildren or giving their parents much-needed relief.  She made quilts, pillow cases, needle point and mittens for all.  More recently she received great joy from great grandchildren.  Alma “retired” to Collingwood 5 years ago filling her days with knitting, embroidering, quilting and reading. Alma was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth, her brother Norman and her sister Cora.  She is survived by her 3 sons, Walter (Mardy) of Elora, Don (Betty) of Collingwood, and Carl (Debbie) of Linwood, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Haskett Funeral Home, 370 William Street, Exeter (1 street west of Main) on Wednesday, July 2nd.     Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m.  The funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m.  Interment in Kirkton Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Exeter United Church, South Huron Hospital or Collingwood General and Marine Hospital.

Sorry for the loss of your mother. When we lived on Huron St. ,her early morning whistle was so beautiful to listen to. We often told her how much we loved to hear her. She would answer ‘was I whistling again. No more the sweet sounds from Alma, our lovely neighbors.

So sorry to hear about Alma. She constantly shared her gifts/talents when she lived in Exeter. She was missed by her friends and church friends when she left Exeter as she will be missed now by her family.

I’m sorry to hear of Alma’s passing. I had lost touch with her when she moved to Collingwood, but had thought of her at times, wondering how she was. My sympathy goes to her families.

My thoughts are with you at this time. Alma was a great advocate for our seniors dining group in Exeter. She helped me out whenever I needed a speaker. Alma had such a wealth of knowledge. She was greatly missed when she left Exeter. She lived a good life and now will have a well deserved rest. Know I am thinking of your family at this sad and difficult time.

Condolence from Jack Norman on July 22nd, 2014 10:07 PM

Walter, Don and Carl,
As an older second cousins living in Vancouver, I hardly know you but was very familiar with your mother when she was still living at home (uncle Ed’s up the road from us in Holmesville) and who was very close to my mother (her cousin Charlotte). My brothers have kept me informed about your mother’s wellbeing and I was very sad to hear of her passing. We have had many family laughs about your mom’s great sense of humour on the few times we were able to enjoy her presence at Trewartha/Mcmath functions whenever I was home from the West.
My thoughts and condolences are with you.
