Thanks to technology, I heard the sad news of Herb’s death on Face Book while living in Thailand and will now offer condolences to the entire Klopp family— to Donna and everyone—by entering a comment or two on this page. I had only mentioned Herb in a comment on FB to Cathy Zimmer Granville a few days ago before hearing of Herb’s death: I contrasted the crooked furrows made by the farmer in his rice field in Thailand to the straight ones remembered on the Klopp farm in Ontario and wondered what Herb’s reaction would have been. The conclusion—I imagined Herb would have gone over to the farmer, had a long chat and soon they would have become the best of friends, possibly with Herb taking over the tractor and showing another way to plough a field. You see, I spent my formative years with Herb and Donna hoeing the bean fields in the summer at a time there was no cell phone music to listen to. The drudgery of the work was borne by talking to Herb as we went up and down the fields, rewarded at the ends with long gulps of currant juice drunk from a large jar. The conversation was aways informative, thoughtful, funny, and connected to what was currently relevant. Were I hoeing beans today with Herb, I’d not be listening to music on a cell phone for that would prevent discussions and listening to the wisdom of a man who had lots to say, a man who was a straight talker, a man who made me think, and a man who influenced me a long time ago. I may be able to trace by politically left of centre bias to those long July days on the bean fields. Who knows? I can say for certain, though, that my wife and I were sad to hear the news of the death of a good man and both of us offer our deepest condolences to Donna and the entire Klopp family.

Barb and I were saddened to hear of Herb’s passing. Herb was a formative influence in my early years – when my parents would drop city-slickers Joel and I off at the farm for a week of not-so-hard-labour. Herb taught us how to get our hands dirty – literally – as we weeded endless rows of beans. But more importantly he set a great example of how to live a full and balanced life -of work, play, big family dinners, church, community – and long political discussions! His partnership with Donna was an awesome thing to behold – two strong, independent, energetic people working together to raise an amazing family – and find time to also take care of a couple of obnoxious free-loaders from the city. I have so many memories of growing up in Zurich with many of them centered around the Klopp family. Going to school with “the twins”, sleepovers with Linda which included being part of large family dinners and a “chat” with Herb, church functions, Girl Guides and eventually a special friendship with Diane which resulted in her being maid of honour at my wedding. Both Herb and Donna were always very big hearted and welcoming.

There are so many memories and special times we have spent together over the years, but none greater when we were playing solo and Herbie would look like he was sleeping on the couch, but suddenly hear us say something and comment. And we would say, “I thought you were sleeping,” and he would say, “nope, just resting.” A smart man, that husband and father of yours, whom I just cherished to play solo with. We were so sorry to not to be able to be with you at the funeral and celebrate his life with you, but I know his love, joy and vibrancy will continue to live on with you all, in your hearts and memories that never die. We are down here in Florida when we sadly got the news, otherwise we would have never missed to be with you and the family. We give thanks for his gift of life and for his and your friendship that met with us in Zurich many years ago, at a time when we really needed it. For that we will always treasure in our hearts. May God continue to bind your wounds of pain and loss but lift them up with his heavenly promise of another time when we will all be together.
