I first met Jane at the Exeter library, where my kids looked forward to her story time.
Such a welcome soul to the young folk.
Then many years later I discovered she was a vary talented ukulele player. She even let me borrow her song book to try and learn myself….but I wasn’t a quick study. But maybe again someday soon I’ll pick up that ukulele again.
A woman of many talents. She will be missed.

I have so many memories of time spent together but mostly I remember the deep love and pride she had for Rick, their children and their spouses. Every summer we’d have a few days together on the farm. I loved spending time with your mom as she was always beaming and giggling as we ventured into the woods. We built make shift forts with branches, brush and leaves. All the while we’d sing as loud as possible to scare off any animals or hunters that might come by. I loved Jane for her spirit of adventure and life! She left a deep love for her in my heart albeit in adulthood we rarely saw each other. I am sure many others that knew her feel the same. I’ve known Jane all of my life. My parents and Bertha and Harold were best friends and Jim and I were best friends and Jane was a sister to me. When I picture Jane, I see her surrounded by a group of young children mesmerized by her reading. Jane brought stories to life and instilled a love of reading in her young listeners! Visits to the town library were always a highlight for my grade one students. Later, I had the privilege of having Jane as an adult volunteer in my classroom. The students loved reading with her! With eyes that sparkled, a warm smile and an enthusiasm for reading, Jane encouraged even the reluctant reader to do their very best. The community of Exeter is a better place having had Jane Hundey in it.

Aunt Jane had the best laugh, I can hear it when I think of card games and other shenanigans us cousins would get up to for the adults.

I have so many wonderful memories of Jane, and I have thought often and fondly of how deeply her love of books influenced me in my many summers of reading through the Silver Birch titles with Beth, her fun and generous hosting of our games and movie nights, her forbearing tolerance of that one birthday party of Beth’s where, in the hubris of youth, I thought it would be funny to inhale an entire Jello egg, and it didn’t go very well. She introduced me to microfiche and the town records during my library volunteer hours, and made the library one of my favourite places in Exeter. I will always remember Jane as an intelligent, funny, warm, creative, wise person and I am heartbroken for your loss.

Jane ( I think if her as Mrs. Hundey/ Beth’s Mum) was one of the very first people I ever met when we moved to Exeter. She was so warm, friendly and helpful as I signed out so many books. She learned my library card by heart and would always recommend new books for me. I remember talking about the Silver Birch books with her, which stretched me to read books I might not have picked for myself.

I also have so many memories of her from times when I spent time with Beth at her house. She was always a calm and safe presence. She asked good questions and was so supportive, and also quick to laugh (especially at silly things Rick would say).
