(1927-2026)
Jean Hendry passed away at 2:00 a.m. on May 28, 2026 at age 98 at Blue Water Rest Home, Zurich, ON.
Jean was born in 1927 in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She remembered her life in Scotland fondly, many friends and family around and a firm place in her community. She worked on the bus system, which is where she met the man that would love her for the rest of her life. An adventuresome spirit and a desire to create a better life for her family, brought Jean to Timmins, Ontario in 1957 with her husband, Jack, and their two young children, Jim and Margo. Jean again proved her resilience by creating a warm and loving home in this new and very different land, working and creating a new community among the other immigrants. Jean and her family moved again, down to Waterloo, where Jim and Margo, now older, again felt the love and support of both their parents as they adapted to another new environment. Jean continued to work and joined her husband Jack in supporting the family until the kids were ready to support themselves. When she retired, she moved with Jack to Port Franks, ON, to a place by the lake that they loved.
Jean and Jack’s home in Port Franks became the sanctuary for the whole family. Jim and Margo and their friends and children knew that they would always be welcome there. And that Jean would have a freezer full of favorites no matter what. The home was immaculate and warm and perfect for any combination of guests and social events. Jean and Jack continued their pattern of developing community and close friendships that resulted in a comfortable and loving life.
Jean enjoyed her life and her family. Every day was an adventure, shared for 59 years with great joy with Jack. She loved to travel, walk, and was forever working in her flower garden. She also paid attention to the news of the world and loved sports. Most nights would find them watching some event and loving every minute. Her enthusiasm for hockey was infectious and the people around her enjoyed events more because of her. Jean loved to travel above almost anything else. She loved new people and places and was always ready for the next adventure. Wherever they ventured, you can be sure that Jean and Jack would come away with new friends and warm memories because that is the way they lived and approached their lives.
Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband Jack (2009) and brother George Robertson.
Jean did not enjoy being alone after Jack died and missed him every single day of her life. But she demonstrated her resilience and continued to develop friendships and stay interested in the world around her.
She is survived by her children Jim (Teresa), Margo Kinnee (Rob), grandchildren Meghan (Michael), Michael (Nadine), Mark (Chrystal) and Andrew; great-grandchildren Simon, Amelia, Daniel, Ian, Nicholas, and Alivia; sister Nancy Thomson; sister-in-law Elizabeth Duffy; and nephews and nieces.
Internment is being planned for June 25, 2026 at the Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo. Rev. Hugh Donnelly of Knox Presbyterian, Waterloo will be officiating.
The family would like to thank the dedicated care staff at Blue Water Rest Home, Zurich, ON that kept Jean engaged, healthy, safe, and comfortable in her final few years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Breast Cancer Canada or the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated.
Sending condolences on behalf of the Residents, Staff and Board at Blue Water Rest Home. You are in our thoughts during this difficult time.
