Peacefully at Alexandra Marine & General Hospital, Goderich on Sunday, August 1, 2021 Margaret Annetta (Glenn) Hayter of Goderich and formerly of Varna in her 98th year. Margaret (Marg) was the loving wife of the late William Mervyn Hayter (1994). Cherished mother and mother-in-law of Darlene and Marshal Babych of Delburne, Alberta, and Glenn and Lois Hayter of Zurich. Adored grandmother of Janine and Steven Dickinson, Libby Rowe and Bill Hayter, and Meghan and David Haggitt. Great-grandmother of Cole, Jack, and Samuel (Sam) Dickinson, Quentin (Quinn), Philippa (Pippa), and Lucy Hayter-Rowe, and Taya and Alexis (Lexi) Haggitt. Also missed by several nieces, nephews, and many friends. Predeceased by her parents Mabel (McTaggart) and John Glenn as well as her brothers and sisters-in-law Gerald and Ardys Glenn, and Bruce and Jessie Glenn.
Marg grew up on the Boundary Road dividing Huron and Perth Counties east of Hensall. She completed her schooling in Lumley Public School and attended business school in Clinton in the early 1940s. After graduating from business school, she started to work for the Bank of Montreal in Zurich where she met Mervyn Hayter who became the love of her life. She transferred to the Bank of Montreal in Hensall where she met Barbara Anderson who became her life-long friend. In September of 1948 Marg married Mervyn and they purchased a farm at the east edge of the village of Varna. They moved to the farm in the spring of 1949 where they raised their children, and became members of the community.
Marg started attending the Varna United Church in the spring of 1949 and was a faithful life-long member of the Varna United Church Women’s group. Her commitment to her faith and her church continued when the Varna United Church merged with other churches to become the Brucefield Community United Church. In September of 2018, Marg moved to Goderich Place Retirement Residence where she made many new friends. She truly enjoyed the card games and visiting with her friends and family. When Covid prevented visitors in the spring of 2020, Marg adapted by learning how to use an IPad and Facebook Messenger to keep in touch with her family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 370 William Street, EXETER on Thursday from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. Due to Provincial COVID-19 restrictions, each person must RSVP for the visitation, please click “Register Now” below to register.
A private family funeral service will be held at Brucefield Community United Church on Saturday, August 7th at 11 AM with Rev. Randy Banks officiating. Interment McTaggart Cemetery, Usborne Township. Memorial donations to the Brucefield Community United Church or Clinton Public Hospital Foundation would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

Sincere condolences in the passing of your mother, Glenn. I know how much she was admired and loved by her family, and will certainly be missed. I have fond memories of her through our meetings over the years. I recall her gentle manner, sharp mind and those wonderful pies she was known for. We were so sorry to learn of your loss. We were among the many at Goderich Place who got to know Margaret and her enthusiasm for participating in activities. She was always interested in talking with people and certainly made the most of her time here. We will miss her.
I didn’t know Marg well but growing up in Varna, I always knew her in the sense that she was Glen and Darlene’s Mom. The last times I saw her were at funerals of mutual friends and in the hallway in Goderich Place a while ago (I think she may have been visiting someone else at the time). She always remembered me and was always so friendly. A truly lovely lady. My condolences.
Marg was a cherished friend of my mother Margaret Lamont Elliott , and was such an amazing woman that she has even left impressive memories on myself and my mother’s grandchildren. With her passing so many stories and history , she has left to us all. She will be so very missed.

When I was a teen and Darlene and I were close friends, I loved going over to the house to spend time together. I remember games, lots of friends and family, laughter and great food. I enjoyed her cooking!
After I married, when we were in the area, Phil and I would stop in and visit with her. She always made us welcome and shared pictures, chats and hospitality. She so loved her children and grandchildren. During Covid times, I would phone her every few months and we would enjoy a good chat and I’d share a Bible verse with her, which she asked for if I didn’t speak up. She was a special lady that I will miss.

Her quick wit and her generous spirit made her a Crokinole favourite. May she rest in peace knowing how much she was loved.

We were so very sorry to hear of the loss of your Mom. Mervin & Marg were dear friends of our Mom & Dad, Cec and Jen Kipfer of Hensall for many years. In later, years after both Marg and our Mom had lost their husbands, we would get together and play cards with Marg & Jen, both being very competitive. Marg was a wonderful woman and her biscuits were famous at Mom & Dad’s house. Dot still has the recipe. Marg was a great cook as you know. Her fridge was covered with pictures of her kids and Grandkids. She was very proud of you all We will miss her and please know that we are thinking of you all at this very difficult time.

Our sympathy to Darlene and Marshal and Glenn and Lois and your family on your loss of a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a very strong caring woman who was very proud of all of you and was thankful for all you did to help her get through the lock down over the past year. I have so many fond memories of her from when I was a little child to our last chat a week ago.
