Posted By Haskett Funeral Homes On January 21, 2024 @ 4:13 PM In Exeter,Obituary | 134 Comments
Valerie Gould of Exeter at the age of 95, passed peacefully on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at Huron Hospice Clinton. As in life and in passing, with her loving daughter and best friend Annie by her side.
Beloved wife of Doug Gould (1994). Loving Mom of John Gould (KC) of Campbell River BC, Anne Gould-Sullivan of Exeter and chosen daughter Joanne Bowen of Exeter. Predeceased by her parents, Les and Emma.
Adored and cherished Gramma of Ryan Sullivan (Kate) of North Vancouver BC, Andrea (Joe), Erin (Kevin), Chris (Steph) all of London. Great Gramma to Luca, Noah, Marion, Margot & Maeve.
In the early years, Val was a medical secretary to a prestigious Dr. at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. After meeting and marrying the love of her life, she moved to Exeter and never looked back; she LOVED Exeter.
An undeniable zest for life with a fiery spirit; Val was one who could challenge, debate, discuss, dispute, plead her case and WIN! She had an amazing sense of humour which turned into MANY pranks over the years. Always up for a game of Bridge, a party, a rum, an adventure, a road trip and shopping! A huge supporter of her community since the mid 50’s, a volunteer for many “causes” over the years, passionate about Heritage (original member of the Exeter Heritage Foundation that saved the Town Hall) and more recent, her mission to have the fence at the Exeter Cemetery replaced.
Family was EVERYTHING to Val and you couldn’t find a more caring and dedicated friend; ALWAYS there for family, ALWAYS there for friends, always thinking of others. Val had an open door policy, coffee always on (or something stronger) and no matter how busy she was, she always had time to listen with a hand out to help. She will be deeply missed.
“Don’t cry because I’m gone; Smile brightly because I lived”
A huge thank you to Willy Van Klooster, his “Angel’s” (Nurses) and support staff at Huron Hospice in Clinton. There will never be enough words to convey our heartfelt gratitude for your kindness, compassion and exceptional care. To Dr. Khiavi, Exeter, thank you for always being there and for your wonderful & compassionate care. To Mike & Lynn, Joanne, Bob, Ken, Sharon & Robbie, Ralph & Josie; you have always been a constant presence especially throughout our journey for the past year and a half, when the support of friends was really needed. The love, compassion and kindness shown, including the non-stop treats and meals, were/are so very much appreciated, thank you! And to Colin, Wes, Art and the staff at Haskett Funeral Home, thank you for doing what you do best! You excel at understanding, showing compassion and giving guidance.
Cremation has taken place. Val‘s celebration of life will be held at the Trivitt Memorial Anglican Church in Exeter, 264 Main St. S. on Friday, January 26 at 3:00 PM. A reception will be held immediately after at Haskett Funeral Home, 456 Main St. S., Exeter. A private interment will take place at a later date at the Exeter cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a donation, your kindness and consideration to the following charities would be greatly appreciated:
Huron Hospice, Clinton, Exeter Cemetery – Fence Project (cheques made payable to The Municipality of South Huron stating Fence Project), or Ontario SPCA & Humane Society

To Anne and to all Val’s family and many many friends I offer sincere condolences. Regardless of our age or the age of a parent, it is a life altering event when a loved one leaves us. I was fortunate to meet Val just a few years ago when she was about 92 and I was invited to play Bridge at her home with mutual friends. All I can say is that I wish I had met Val fifty years sooner! Val was sharp as a tack, offered wonderful hospitality, and had a great sense of humour. I will remember her with fondness every time I deal a hand, pass, or make a bid.
Anne and Ryan. So sorry to hear of Valerie’s passing. We enjoyed the time we spent with her immensely and we are very fortunate to have known her. I am grateful to her for teaching a few of us how to play bridge and find myself quoting her teachings often (with not as much colorful language:)). We will miss her.

It was indeed a pleasure, and an honour, to be a friend of Val Gould. Her thoughtfulness was always so evident, and her quick wit lightened many situations. We have wonderful memories, that go back many years, of time spent with Val and her family. Her door was always “open”, and her heart was with you through thick and thin. She left her mark on this world, and her memory will live on with her grateful friends and acquaintances, like us.

Dear Anne and Ryan, we were so saddened to learn of the passing of Val while at the same time we love the zest for life that Val so enjoyed. Her spirit was so vibrant, her passion unbridled and her love for family unmatched. The celebration of her life brought back the fondest of memories for Leslie and I. Val’s laugh was unmistakeable and was so infectious. If Val laughed we all did. We have a special connection to your family Anne, as you introduced Leslie and I resulting in our marriage and a wonderfully special relationship with Val. Val leaves an empty space in our hearts but her spirit will be with us always. We love you more!!! Leslie and Brad Duncan
Dear Anne, Ryan, John and family.
We were sad to hear Val passed away. She really did have a zest for life! We can still hear her hearty contagious laugh! She was a good neighbor. She welcomed us when we first moved to the neighborhood and offered her assistance to a young couple, new to town, over 40 years ago! She opened her pool to us and the children on hot summer nights! She was an icon in our community and she will be greatly in our neighborhood!
Dear Ann…you were so blessed to have had the close friendship with your mom, something we have always admired. And she was blessed to have had you by her side.
Sincerely Ralph and Josey
Dear Anne, John, Ryan and all the family. Our heartfelt condolences on the loss of your Mom and Grandmother. She was a definite force in life, and such a delight to have known these past many years. Her vibrant zest for living had such a positive impact on everyone she encountered. She will be fondly remembered.
