FLOOD: Diane Eloise (née McKenzie)

FLOOD: Diane Eloise (née McKenzie)

Diane Eloise Flood (née McKenzie)

1941-2020

After facing her advanced cancer with grace and dignity, Diane died at home in Lucan on January 5th exactly as she wished, supported by husband of 59 years J.W. Stanley Flood and daughters Kimberly and Michelle, and within sight of her much loved Christmas lawn display.

Diane was predeceased by daughter Sherri Lynne, parents Veda and Ross McKenzie and sister Barbara Therrien. She is survived by sister and good friend Jean Ferguson (Stan); brother in law Bruce Flood (Dianne); and will be dearly missed by son in law Kelly Barnett (Michelle), grandchildren Sara and Hanna Barnett and Andreas Kyriakos (Kim), and the Therrien, Ferguson and Flood nieces and nephews and their families.

Born in Paisley, Ontario, Diane marched into Stan’s heart in 1960 as a majorette for the Lion’s Club band in Woodstock where her family then lived.  They married in 1961 and made homes and memorable holiday gatherings there and in Ingersoll, Paris, Owen Sound and London before settling in Lucan.  Diane was a childcare provider and ‘extra parent’ for dozens of families, many of whom visited these past weeks to share hugs, memories and stories of their grown up adventures and achievements, a true highlight for mom.  She also loved updates from ‘the girls’ from the Lucan Optimist thrift store where she volunteered for nine years.

There are not enough superlatives to describe our family’s appreciation for the many, many gestures of kindness from friends and neighbours in the Lucan community through mom’s illness—the thoughtful visits and calls to hospital and home, generous cards, flowers, gifts, meals, snow removal, etc.  We are grateful to the compassionate and skilled nurses and personal support workers of the LHIN Complex Care Team from St. Elizabeth’s and the VON who made it possible for us to ensure Diane’s comfort and honour her wishes in her final weeks.  Thanks to University Hospital LHSC, London Regional Cancer Program, Dr. A. Lazo-Langner, Dr. T. Nguyen and the staff of Lucan drugstore.

At Diane’s request, cremation has taken place with an outdoor Celebration of Life to come when the trees are full and flowers are in bloom.  In the meantime, in her memory and spirit, bake and share shortbread cookies or butter tarts, support the Lucan Optimist thrift store, cheer on a children’s hockey game, leave your Christmas decorations out extra-long this year – or even get the Valentine’s Day/St. Patrick’s Day/Easter decorations out early!  If a donation is preferred, Diane suggested Jessica’s House to ensure loving end of life care for others. Her other final ask: “If you smoke, for heaven’s sake, stop!”

Condolence from Jake, Julie, Tyson and Jared Coulter on January 7th, 2020 10:07 PM

Stan, Michelle, Kim and family

We are so sad to hear this news. Diane was such a huge part of our lives. As Tyson has said most of his childhood memories were in your backyard. I can’t even count the number of times I tried picking the boys up but Diane was having one of her parties and they didn’t want to leave – her parties were the best (especially when they got to smash the gingerbread house)!! I don’t know what Jake and I would have done without her. We were so lucky to have her in our lives. She will be missed.

Love Julie, Jake, Tyson and Jared Coulter

We are so sorry to hear of Aunt Diane’s passing. She had a heart of gold and I have wonderful memories from childhood to adulthood, too many to mention. I will never forget the time as a youngster we took Aunt Diane perch fishing on the 16 Mile Creek in Oakville, during a family get together, and yes, she caught the most. We enjoyed our recent visits to the house over the past couple of years (and the baking!) and will cherish our time with her forever. Our thoughts and condolences are with you at this time of sorrow.

Dear Stan and girls:
We are so grateful to have had such a ray of light living amongst our tight knit neighbourhood. Diane always encouraged fairness and equity and made every individual feel special. The way she genuinely supported our boys at hockey games – always asking when the next game was, made our hearts soar. We loved looking forward to each season with each new decorating theme she was so keen to put into action – especially St. Paddy’s Day, Easter and Christmas. I’m so blessed to have had a special visit with her as we shared our love and concerns for tomorrow’s children.. We’ll always remember Diane very fondly and will miss her dearly. Thinking of you all.
