Posted By Haskett Funeral Homes On February 24, 2025 @ 1:25 PM In Exeter,Obituary | 237 Comments

DYKSTRA: Marten Ivan of Exeter

Marten passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at the age of 69. Beloved husband of Laurie (Richard) Dykstra for over 46 years. Proud and loving father of Jason and Erin Dykstra, and Janelle and Moe Salih. Devoted grandpa of Aubrey and Owen Dykstra; Reya and Halee Salih. Dear brother of Michael Dykstra, brother-in-law of Randy Yearley and Lynne Richard-Onn. Fondly remembered by many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Lowell “Bob” and Beatrice Dykstra, mother-in-law Gretta Richard, sister Grace Yearley, and brother-in-law James Onn.

Marten travelled the roads as a Transport Truck Driver for over 50 years, 26 of those operating his own Transport Company. His passion for travel did not end on the ground; Marten was an accomplished pilot and was very proud of the miles flown in the air. His faith led him to become a Lay Minister recently, which he took much joy in speaking at Sunday services. Marten had an amazing talent of simplifying his faith to everyday life. With his love of music, Marten was involved in church and community choirs, where he sang, played piano and accordion. Above all, Marten loved his family with all his heart. He was a very proud husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was the silent support that kept everyone together and a helping hand to anyone in need.

Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 456 Main Street South, EXETER on WEDNESDAY, February 26th from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 PM.

Marten’s funeral service will be held in the funeral home on FRIDAY, February 28th at 11 AM. Interment Exeter Cemetery.

Stream the service live or at your convenience by visiting https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1XzrNCcV66/.

Donations to the Huron County Food Bank Distribution Centre, Habitat for Humanity Huron County, or the Knox Presbyterian Church Bayfield would be appreciated by the family.

Condolence from Brenda McLean on February 24th, 2025 5:40 PM

Dear Laurie & Family: There are no words to express our shock and sadness when Jason called to let me know of Marten’s passing. There is a church family at Knox Bayfield that is deeply grieving, and we can only imagine how you and your family are struggling with Marten’s sudden and unexpected passing. We feel so grateful to have wonderful memories of Marten who involved himself in all aspects of church life, from preaching, helping with the fundraisers, bringing food to the luncheons, greeting and just being that person who would come to me and say, “what can I do to help or what do you need.” Not to mention, we will miss his singing voice because heaven knows we needed him leading us! I struggled on Sunday looking at the stool at the front of the church that he would preach his sermons from. Just know Laurie that we will be there for you and your family and don’t hesitate to call on us. Our congregation will be keeping you in our thoughts as you and your family mourn this huge loss.
Our heartfelt condolences from Brenda McLean on behalf of the Church Family at
Knox Presbyterian Church, Bayfield

Laurie, your husband Marten has always held a special place in my heart. I’ve cherished the numerous local road trips we embarked on, exploring the charming towns of Kitchener and Eriea. We’d visit music stores and unique restaurants, and his passion for music was truly inspiring. I fondly remember the times we sang together in various choirs, accompanied by him on the piano or organ, and occasionally with him playing his accordion. I will deeply miss him.

Ofschoon ons bestaan zich op grote afstand van elkaar afspeelt, zijn er toch ook een aantal keren geweest dat wij elkaar getroffen hebben. Een bijzondere ervaring voor hen!

Sandra Newton

Dear Laurie and family I am sending my deepest sympathy to you and your family at this painful time. Marten was an exemplary person, who shared his musical talents with our community. When needed, he preached at various churches. I had the privilege of hearing him preach. You were aware of his love for the Lord from what he conveyed. While you are mourning his loss; others are rejoicing to meet him behind the veil.

Dear Laurie and family,
We extend our sincere condolences on the sudden and very sad passing of Marten. He was such a good friend to my parents Stewart &Lil and their time spent together at Caven Presbyterian Church. Dad enjoyed so much his ride-alongs in the truck with Marten. He will be so missed by all who knew and loved him.
