Peacefully, at her residence, on Sunday, January 29, 2012, Patricia Ruth (Hay) Cook, of Hensall, passed away in her 83rd year. Beloved wife of Douglas Allan Cook. Dear mother of Beth Cook and Mucio Duarte of Toronto, Kathy and Ted Girard of Ladysmith, B.C., Jenny Carter and Ken Cowan of London and Peter Cook and Leah Williams of Alameda, Ca.. Sadly missed by her grandchildren Patricia, Thompson and Aless Duarte-Cook, Emma Girard, Cameron and Derek Carter, Thomas Cook and the newly-arrived great-grandchild Henry Girard-Ziakin. Predeceased by her parents George and Myrtle (Anderson) Hay and sisters Hazel (Harold) Murray, Mabel (Victor) Jeffrey and Doris and (Dr. John) Goddard and brother-in-law Herman Dettmer. Pat was an artist and was passionate about painting and sculpture. She was known for her unique fashion sense, her love of literature, her infinite kindness and her gracious hospitality. The family would like to thank niece Joan Karstens, Dr. Sean Ryan, Charlene Foxton and all of the CCAC caregivers. With the help of these people, Pat was able to stay in her home through her last difficult years of her life. A special thank you to Mariette Bilcke for her loving friendship and care for Pat and Doug over many years.

A memorial service will be held on Satirday, April 28, 2012 at 2 p.m. in Hensall United Church. Visitation 1 hour prior to service time. Cremation has taken place. Interment Hensall Union Cemetery at a later date.

Please consider making a contribution to Kababayan Community Centre in Toronto which will direct the funds to the survivors of recent natural disasters in the Philippines. This is a small thank you to the many Philippine caregivers who courageously leave their own families and care so lovingly for families abroad.

Condolence From: John Kochan
I was saddened to learn that Pat had passed. As children, she welcomed us into her home as if we were family. She was a special lady that saw the good in everyone and the beauty in everything. I remember her fondly. My condolences to her family and friends.

Condolence From: Jeff and Louise Carroll
Dear Doug, Beth, Kathy, Beth and Peter,
Growing up with the Dettmers as my second family I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know Pat. She was a genuinely lovely person. Not only was she always interesting but sincerely interested when she asked a question of you. She had panache.
Deepest condolences from my wife Louise and me.

Condolence From: Jim & Arlene [Chipchase] Styles
Doug, Beth, Kathy, Jennifer & Peter – How saddened I am to hear of Pat’s passing. I have so many fond memories of all of you, especially when you lived across the road. She was like a second Mom to me. Beth & I had so many great play dates. Whenever I saw Pat after I moved away, she would always mention that she still remembered when I told Beth when she was little that if she didn’t share she wouldn’t be able to go to school, We had so much fun playing together – making doll clothes from scraps of fabric, playing the piano, playing hide & seek – it all seems like yesterday. I have two paintings that Pat gave to Mom & Dad when you moved away from London Rd & everytime I look at them I think of her. Doug & family – I wish you peace & comfort now & always – she was a wonderful lady. Love to all!

Condolence From: Lisa, Derrick, Kayleb, Mady and Seth Brown
We are so very saddened by the loss of our dear neighbour, Pat. As far as neighbours go, you couldn’t ask for a better one. Pat, along with Doug, never hesitated to come out of their way to say hello or walk across the road to have a “chat” with us. They seemed genuinely charmed by our children and always enjoyed their playful outdoor antics (they made a point of telling us this on a regular basis)

Pat, had a way in which to make everything in life seem so beautiful and exciting. Her stories inspired us and her generous heart was evident in everything she did. Derrick and I had the pleasure of stopping over for a drink a few years ago and left their home that night feeling so impressed with her and Doug’s love for each other. Their playful banter had us in stitches and we still to this day talk of how “cool” they were.

We are very proud to be the owners of two Pat Cook original pieces of art that hangs in our home as a constant reminder of how we were so honoured to have lived right across the road to one of the most beautiful we have ever known.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Doug and the entire family.

Doug & family;
Our family had the honor of meeting Pat when we traveled to Hensall in 2010 to visit Elsa’s sister, Hermie. It was obvious that she had such class and intelligence that she would add considerably to any situation that might arise. I truly enjoyed the conversation she engaged us in and only wish that I would of had more of an opportunity to get to know her better. From the little I did learn, it sounded as if she had an interesting and rewarding life. Through her genorosity of the 2 paintings she gave to us, we have a reminder of her creativity hanging in the entrance to our house.
Please accept our heartfelt sympathy of her passing and rest assured of the wonderful impression she left on us and, most likely, all others that came in contact with her. She will certainly be missed!

We were saddened to hear of Pat’s passing. We have nothing but good memories of her. We remember the many years we lived across from your family, Pat’s painting of Lisa and Jacqueline when they were very young and the fun we used to share when we got together, which was often back then. We will miss her, as will everyone who ever met her, but we will remember all the many good times. We hope those memories help each of you in your grieving and knowing that she is at peace and with her God now. We are sorry we cannot speak with you personally but we are out of country for the winter months. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you. Jim and Mary Lou Hyde
