CHERNIWCHAN: John J. of Ilderton, formerly of Calgary and Edmonton

John J. Cherniwchan passed away peacefully at University Hospital-LHSC, surrounded by his loved ones, on Sunday, December 15, 2024 at the age of 57 after a long battle with COPD.

John was born on September 24, 1967 in Edmonton, Alberta. He grew up with a passion for sports and a love for his siblings. John lived a life of struggles but he never gave up on trying to make his life better. He moved to Calgary 18 years ago and met his wife Brittany (Edwards) in 2014.

John is also survived by his sister Tammy (Trevor) Kalshoven, his brother William Cherniwchan, his son Dylan, his daughter Kaitlyn, his in-laws Geoff & Shelly Edwards, sister-in-law Melissa (Bob) Stinnett, brothers in-law Tyler (Ashley) Edwards, Jake Edwards, grandma-in-law Joan Edwards, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

John loved listening to music and being outside in the nice weather, especially in the summertime as he loved to garden. He would have his best bud, Joker, laying at his feet sleeping in the shade.

Thank you to all the staff at University Hospital-LHSC on Unit-4 Medicine and the Palliative Care Team. You made his final days comfortable.

John, you will be deeply missed. I cherished our connection and the kindness and humility you brought into every interaction. I will always remember how special you made my husband and me feel by seating us at the family table at your and Brittany’s wedding—a true testament to how you saw friends as family. You were a bright light in this world, and your absence will be felt by so many. Sending much love to Brittany and your family during this difficult time.

“Tammy, William, and family. So sad to see that a Gibbon’s student has passed away. I have fond memories of John attending Gibbons. Later after he graduated from Gibbons and went on to high school he would often stop back in at the school to talk to the teachers. So glad it was a place that he felt welcome to come back to.
