Wayne, Joan and families:
We are very sorry to hear of Herb’s passing away. But at 98 yrs he sure had a great life. And to live on his farm for 73 yrs ! And so healthy up to the end. Occasionally I would stop for a visit if I was going by when he was getting the mail. Always knew who I was and always liked to reminisce about the old days or what was new in farming. I remember on a couple of occasions he and dad would race and try to pass each other on the way home from the Zurich feed mill with their old pickup trucks loaded down with bags of feed. They had the windows rolled down and were egging each other on.. Truly an era is now gone….. and thanks to Herb and you Joan for letting me pick grapes. They made the best jelly..

Condolence from Marlene and Mary Vivian on February 22nd, 2020 7:20 PM

To The Beierling Family:

It was with deep sadness on hearing that your dad, our Uncle Herb passed away. To all the members of the family our heartfelt condolences.

His long journey here on earth inspired many and is witnessed through the love of his family, friends and his community.

On those occasions when we visited with him we enjoyed treating him to lunch, then we would gather back at the farmhouse sitting around the kitchen table with Uncle Herb telling and showing us pictures of the family. We also would wander down to the metal Quonset shed where he showed us were he kept all the tractors and how we even got to sit on one.

When we were young children and going to Aunt Marjorie’s and Uncle Herb’s farm for Christmas dinner was such a thrill. They worked hard to put on a wonderful spread for all. We enjoyed sending him birthday and Christmas cards each year. In September 2018 we even spent time helping to pick a few pears from the tree he said he had planted some 72 years ago. He would talk about trying to stay in the farmhouse for 50 years, well he sure past that goal and many more years.

We are glad to have been a part of the extended family circle and blessed to have shared and journeyed this road of life with him. He was a very proud yet a very humble man.

God Bless

Daughters of Keith and Florence Vivian

Joyce, Wayne, Joan, Ruby and family; My sympathy to you and your children. While away, I heard of your loss and am truly sorry. Herb was a gentle, hard working soul who loved his family, friends, and farm life. He was a terrific family friend to us, especially to our dad. They shared farming equipment, harvest yields and the odd cold beverage as well. Even, up to his last days, they still enjoyed their visits.
Hats off to all of you for enabling your dad to remain on the farm as long as he did. He was a strong, independent man, but he couldn’t have done it without your support.
On behalf of our dad, George, and all of the Mathonia families, we offer our deepest condolences.
