After a long battle with cancer, Pieter passed away peacefully at the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital with family at his side on Monday, November 8, 2021 of Ilderton at the age of 82. Beloved husband of Rose (Van Wijk) Bakker. Pieter was a very proud father, Opa and Great Opa. He is survived by his children, Anna-Lee (John) Straatman, Cindy (Scott) Webster, Lisa (Charles) Ansems and Peter (Teresa) Bakker. Proud Opa of Nick Pittman (Kate), Lianna Van Engelen (Eric) Brandon Straatman, (Dawnna) Trevor Straatman; Emily, Kyle, David and Ashley Webster; Jeremy (Elsa), Alisha Ansems; Kayla, Ryan, Kent and Julia Bakker. Beloved Great Opa of Annabelle, Jacob, Emma, and Nathan Van Engelen, William and Jack Pittman, Kanon and Tucker Straatman, and Tova Ansems. Pieter is predeceased by all of his siblings and fondly remembered by his in-laws, many nieces and nephews in Canada and the Netherlands.
Pieter was born in Oranjewoud, Friesland, the Netherlands on May 31, 1939, the second youngest child of Jan and Antje Bakker. He immigrated to Canada by himself in 1958 at the age of 18 landing at Pier 21 in Halifax, NS and then travelled to London, Ontario, with only 15 dollars in his pocket. Pieter married the love of his life, Rose, in 1963, enjoying 58 years of marriage. Pieter worked in construction for more than 40 years. His second love was farming. He started farming just outside of London and then in Lucan for many years. He was extremely proud to retire on his farm outside of Ilderton where he spent time gardening and raising chickens, pheasants, peacocks, and even a few cattle. Pieter was instrumental in the formation of the Lucan Minor Soccer Club.
Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 223 Main Street, LUCAN on Friday from 2 -4 and 6 – 8 PM. Due to Provincial COVID-19 restrictions, each person must RSVP for the visitation, please click “Register Now” below to register.
A private family Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Saturday, November 13th at 2:30 PM with Father Steve Wlusek presiding. Interment St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Lucan. A public Celebration of Life will be held at the Ilderton Community Centre, 13168 Ilderton Road, Ilderton on Saturday, November 13th at 4:30 PM. Due to Provincial COVID-19 restrictions, each person must RSVP for the celebration of life. Please click “Register Now” below to register. Due to Provincial COVID-19 proof of vaccination restrictions, each person must show proof that they are fully vaccinated to attend the celebration. Proof of vaccination can be obtained by visiting covid19.ontariohealth.ca.
Donations to the National Poppy Trust Fund or Lucan Minor Soccer would be appreciated by the family.

Rose, kinderen en kleinkinderen,
Graag wil ik ook langs deze weg getuigen van mijn diepste medeleven met jullie na het overlijden van Piet.
Samen met hem heb jij heel wat mee moeten maken, Rose. Ondanks alle wederwaardigheden heb je steeds welgemoed de draad van het dagelijkse leven weer opgepakt. Daarbij heb je ongetwijfeld erg veel steun gehad van Piet, de nuchtere Fries, die ten allen tijde zichzelf bleef en met zorg zijn almaar groter wordende familie koesterde.
Op hun beurt zullen je kinderen en kleinkinderen je graag steunen in deze moeilijke tijden.
Ik wens jullie allen veel kracht en sterkte toe dit verlies een plek te geven on jullie leven.

Piet is overleden! Na zoveel jaren ziek zijn, waarbij hij telkens weer opkrabbelde! Maar nu heeft hij rust!
Wij hebben mooie herinneringen aan onze tijd samen, in Canada, maar ook in Borne en in Friesland. Ben herinnert zich nog goed hoe hij met Piet ging vissen op zijn vaste stekje aan het meer.
