It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Bernie at his home on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at the age of 85. Beloved husband of Margaret (Ellery) Avery for 65 years. Cherished father of Bernie W. and Maureen Avery, Dan Avery and Maureen Leong, and Belinda and Brad Greaves. Adored grandfather of Bernie P. and Katie Avery, Creighton Avery and D’Arcy Langlois, Steven and Shikha Avery; Darren Avery and Wes Elmes, Lisa and Matt Gillan, Craig and Sarah Avery; Avery and Hamilton Baker-Greaves, and Megan and Peter Dueck. Great-grandfather of Hank, Tommy; Neena; Ethan, Brock; Elliot; Millie, and Hailey. Dear brother-in-law of Barb Avery. Fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his siblings and siblings-in-law Jim and Wilma Avery, Ken Avery, Kay and Don Whitborn, and Doreen Ellery and his parents William and Ellen (Whalen) Avery.
Bernie was a proud lifelong resident of Lucan and served his community for several years as a member of the village council. A skilled carpenter and entrepreneur, he was also a devoted family man who took great joy in being part of his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He loved camping and travelling the islands with his wife Margaret and their close group of friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him, especially those who looked forward to seeing him on his cherished daily drives around town.
Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 223 Main Street Lucan on Thursday, May 22nd from 5 – 7 PM. Bernie’s funeral service will be held the following day on Friday, May 23rd at the funeral home at 11 AM. Interment St. James Cemetery, Clandeboye
Donations to Diabetes Canada in Bernie’s memory would be appreciated by the family.

I spent a lot of time during my teenage years at the Avery farm . Bernie and Marg always made me feel welcome. The long walk down the driveway was always sobering. He will be missed .

We are so sorry to hear of Bernie s passing . Lucan will not be the same without him
we will miss him so much-Arch and him spent a lot of time together over the years. I remember working for Bernie and Marg-painting all those huge yard displays-fun times-later on painting the wooden mobiles-watching the woodstove “blow” at any given moment. Hearing how Arch and Bernie would dare each other to get in the pool every spring at 65 degrees f! Just sitting and talking with him after swimming in his pool-so many good memories over the years! I couldn’t make it to visitation-I am way too sick-don’t want to pass it on to anybody-Please know that our thoughts are with all of you at this time-take care of each other.

Bernie was one of the first people we met when we moved to Lucan. Through various functions my husband and I got to know him well as he was helpful in introducing us to the Lucan happenings. Gord had many the long conversations while washing the vehicles. I never knew that it would take over 2 hours to wash a pick up.
Dear Marg and Family. It was a shock to read about Bernie’s passing. So hard to believe that he is gone, one of the originals of Lucan. Always had a smile and a chat. The Village of Lucan will not be quite the same without him. Thinking of you Marg at this very difficult time. May you and your family find some measure of peace at this time of sorrow. Rest in peace Bernie.

The news of Bernie passing is a great shock. I visited with Bern and Marg recently and was glad that they were doing so well. Bernie was always kind and friendly, working for them for 14 years, as my first job I returned parttime after I had my children. I always enjoyed being at the farm. I am so very, very sorry for your loss.
