My heart is saddened and goes out to her family and loved ones.
She was a teacher for many of my friends and I personally remember her from when I was in the H.B. Beal student council. She encouraged me to share my ideas despite my fears and anxieties, had faith in me when I had little for myself, and I’ll always remember her for that. Thank-you Ms Armstrong.

Condolence from Eric Heidenheim on May 22nd, 2020 10:01 PM

Lori was one of the kindest and supportive colleagues I ever had the privilege of working with. As a Beal parent I also really appreciated the inspiration and mentoring she gave to my daughters. I will never forget how she tirelessly worked to provide recognition and support to students who otherwise might have “slipped through the cracks.”

My thoughts are with her family.

Condolence from Gabrielle on May 22nd, 2020 10:02 PM

Lori was an amazing teacher and an equally beautiful soul. I have never met a teacher, let alone a person, who was so friendly and encouraging, she could always make me feel like I was someone important and worth talking to, even if I had never been in her classes for four years. I’m sad to know such an amazing person has left this world, but it gives me all the more hope and ambition to bring even a fraction of the warm light she was able to bring into the life of anyone she met. My heart goes out to the family and everyone who are mourning, I hope you feel the embrace of everyone’s love and support in your heart. Remember to reminisce in all of the good memories you have with her and feel the joy she brought to your life in your heart as well, though her body may be gone, her spirit will live on there in your heart.

Condolence from Catherine Pont on May 23rd, 2020 9:05 AM

My heart aches for everyone who knew Lori, we have lost an amazing person. She was the most beautiful person I knew. I was her student at Beal and even though she was my teacher, I considered her a friend. Her classroom was always full of students who wanted to see her and talk to her and she made time for every single one. She ate lunch in her office with the door open so that even on her free time you could access her. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I cried in her office and she consoled me. She literally was the kindest most caring woman I’ve ever known. Her laugh and smile were infectious. She taught me to love others and myself. Thank you Lori for being who you were and making me who I am today. I love you and will miss you dearly.

Condolence from Natalie Nielsen on May 23rd, 2020 10:32 AM

Armstrong was not only one of my favourite teachers but one of the nicest people to have ever been in my life. She inspired so many of us just in my class alone and her gorgeous smile will be missed. She always saw the best in people and could see so many reasons why students should keep pushing even when they felt they had nothing left in them. I was going through some challenging times in high school especially the year I was in her class, I was In a bad place mentally and never wanted to go to school because of issues that were happening there with me. But on days when I would build up the courage to go, I would usually just go to her class and then go home. Her classroom was a safe place, a place where I didn’t feel judged, and instead felt as if someone wanted to understand. Her students health and happiness was always her #1 priority and I aspire to be even a fraction of the person she was. I wish I could tell her to her face just how much her advice has helped me, but since I can’t I will continue to try to live the way she did, putting others first, caring about people, and having the biggest heart. I was in a toxic relationship during the time I was in her class and I remember she would always sit with me and ask me how I was doing, and one day she told me “ If he could just leave you like that he never deserved you in the first place.” I’ve remembered this advice so many times after in other situations in my life. She used to tell me that I was beautiful, and smart, and kind, and that I deserved nothing but the best. She saw my worth when I couldn’t. I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to know her and I am so thankful I got put in that class because at one point it saved me. She is an amazing person and her spirit will live on through those she impacted ❤️ we miss and love u Armstrong xo

Condolence from Christine Bryant on May 23rd, 2020 11:30 AM

Lori was such a brilliant teacher, who truly understood that every student’s needs were unique. She could reach each and every one of them – from those who were eager for enrichment, to those who just needed a caring adult.
She understood the misunderstood. She was an ally to our most at-risk students, and never judged their actions – she knew that not all children come from the same place and that for some, school was often a safer environment than home.
She was the perfect example of what every teacher should be – someone who not only sees, but can bring out the potential in everyone.
My condolences to the family and everyone who’s lives she touched. Will will truly miss her beautiful spirit.

Condolence from Gavin Foster on May 23rd, 2020 1:04 PM

I cannot put into words how much Ms. Armstrong will be missed.

I do not exaggerate when I say that she changed my life as the gifted coordinator at Beal. At a time when I was at risk of dropping out of high school, she was able to keep me on track and allow me to explore my passions and dreams in academia. She was kind, understanding, compassionate, and so incredibly wonderful to talk to. She was one of the greatest teachers I have ever had.

She should serve as a model for what all teachers should strive to be. I never feared going to school because I knew that she’d be there to support me. And, in fact, I began to once more *look forward* to going to school because I knew there was someone there to encourage me and help me explore those subjects I had a great interest in. On top of the regular teaching she did, I remember we even arranged going to an escape room in London with a group of 4 or 5 and it remains one of the greatest/funnest moments of my life and I will always cherish it and remember it. The bonds I was able to make in her class, and most especially with her, is something I can never forget.

As someone who was always on the fringes of the academic system, and had an incredibly unorthodox high school journey, I was so so so pleased that she was able to attend my graduation party/celebration in 2017 at my home so that I was able to express to her in my own words how much she meant to me. I hope she knows and everyone around her knows how much I and others cared for her and how grateful we are.

I could probably continue writing this and compose a book of the memories that Ms. Armstrong helped shape and the path that she was able to lay out for me at a time when everything looked so bleak. She changed my life and for that I can’t express enough gratitude. I loved Ms. Armstrong and I will miss her so much.

I never thought that I will be able to speak from my heart in English until I had the opportunity to talk to Lori. She made me feel like we were talking in Spanish and, now, I’m not sure if may be it was in Spanish… that was her power…that was her magic, that was the way that she made you feel. She was intelligent and funny, kind and generous.
We lost an angel.

Condolence from Laura Heidenheim on May 23rd, 2020 1:33 PM

I was one of the many, many lucky students to be one of Ms. Armstrong’s “kids”. Thinking back now, I can’t believe the amount of opportunities she created for youth. I can remember the total elation, joy and adventure she created in my life; taking a few of us to Alberta for a student leadership conference, the many student council retreats. She let students really be leaders – it gave me something to work towards, something to look forward to and something to be proud of. She gave us community, friendship and endless support. Years later as I entered University and had the confidence to speak in front of people, lead teams and manage projects I was always conscious of the person who instilled those things in me and fostered the environment where I could grow into myself. There are so many of Ms. A’s “kids” out in the world today who have that extra bit of spunk in them – a small piece of the light, energy and passion that exuded from her.

My deepest love and sympathy goes to Tristin, Dena and Caelan. Thank you for sharing Lori with so many of us, her life is a gift that lives on in every one of her students.

Condolence from Dalton on May 23rd, 2020 3:50 PM

In late 2017 I moved to London from Goderich. At the time I was in a group home struggling with many issues surrounding mental health and my happieness in general. I took Student Leadership and English. I had the the pleasure ot having Mrs. Armstrong as my teacher for both subjects. As soon as I went into those classrooms with her I felt safe and happy. She acted like a motherly figure in my life, and I couldn’t be more thankful to this day. Countless snacks she had on hand when students missed lunches (including myself) , the amazing hugs she gave when I was upset and felt alone, and the heart warming smile I saw on her every single day. Lori Armstrong was not only the best teacher I have ever had in my highscool career, but she was my mentor and role model. I had trouble adjusting to Beal Secondary School, and Mrs. Armstrong really made the transition effortless. I know for a fact that I wasn’t the only student she impacted. There has to be hundreds out there. I will truly miss you Mrs. Armstrong. Thank you for being such a great support in my life.

Condolence from Jenn Lemieux on May 24th, 2020 3:23 PM

I always looked forward to seeing and networking with Lori and Tristan at the Ontario and Canadian Student Leadership Conferences and missed seeing her at the last one. Lord knows she fought hard to get there. Such a giving, thoughtful, dedicated, strong and compassionate person. Reading the impact she had on the students she served brings extra tears to my eyes. We have lost an amazing woman indeed who was an inspiration to many. My deepest condolences to you Tristan and family. Keeping you all in my prayers.

Condolence from Jodie Hauch on May 24th, 2020 10:09 PM

I am so sorry for your loss. Lori was an amazing person! Whenever I asked Lori to come to my Health for Life classes to share her story and journey, she was always so positive, articulate, kind, caring and compassionate. I will miss her greatly and the leadership she offered to the halls of HB Beal. Lori – you are the ultimate Raider.

Condolence from Scott & Melissa Veenvliet on May 24th, 2020 10:26 PM

Lori certainly has touched the hearts and minds of so many; the moving and meaningful messages I see here are a living testament to that. Every time we were together, whether it was a regular game night or a GenCon trip, she’d always ask the right questions of each and every person she spoke with and demonstrated that she genuinely was interested in all people and what they were going through. Her smile and sense of humor was contagious too. She always asked about the kids and was interested in how they were growing up and what they were interested in. I learned from Tristan that she liked the saying “always leave the campsite better than how you found it” and I think we can all say that our lives were left better because we crossed paths with Lori.

Condolences to Lori’s Family and friends.
Ms. Armstrong was my teacher and mentor in the late 90’s at Beal.
I will always remember her as the kindhearted, genuine, wonderful woman who treated everyone with respect. I was a student in her very first leadership class. Her lessons and memory with stay with me forever.
She was truly one of a kind.
Rest In Peace Lori

Condolence from Mya Soleil Matos on May 25th, 2020 7:26 AM

My condolences to friends, family, and many more. Lori was a wonderful person. She was loved and she loved even harder. It’s hard to put into words how much she will be missed.
I will forever be grateful for all that she has done for myself and so, so many others. She wasn’t just a teacher to many of us, she was a mentor and a friend. I am a better person because of her, no doubt, and I will continue to live through what she has taught me. I hope some day I can learn to be half the woman she was. I will never take for granted all she has done. Thank you for everything Momstrong. Thank you.
My love and support go to Tristan (or as I know him Mr. Hill) and Dena who have always been her biggest supporters.

Condolence from Ben Berardini on May 25th, 2020 7:42 AM

I was a student of Ms. Armstrong’s and I am extremely grateful to have had many wonderful memories and important lessons learned from her. She provided unique opportunities at school which encouraged me to try my best and work on what I love to do. She also helped me develop motivation for learning outside of my main interest as well. I am very thankful for the times that she supported me and helped me overcome doubts. She always gave so much uplifting support and brought out the best in people and this has inspired me to try my best to bring out the best in people as well.

I send love and sympathy to her family and everyone that was close to her.

Condolence from Nicole Haire on May 25th, 2020 11:30 AM

Lori was a person whose light shone from the inside out. It was a privilege for me to journey with her as a CASSA Director, student leadership advisor, and CSLC Co-Chairs. She had a quiet way of leading that made others feel empowered and respected. I have truly valued the friendship that she continued to show me, even after I moved far away to Qatar. She had a natural ability to encourage others and make them feel so important and valued. I know she will be dearly missed by Tristan, her partner in crime and best friend, as well as by her family, friends, colleagues, and students. I am keeping you all in my prayers, and I feel happy for Lori knowing where she is today. I bet she’s dancing!

Condolence from Susan Smith on May 25th, 2020 11:32 AM

Lori was such a good listener. No matter the challenges she was facing, she always had time to listen and help someone else. She was a help to me over the years in ways that I may not have fully appreciated. Lori will be sorely missed as a teacher, colleague and friend. My deepest condolences to you and all your family. My prayers are with you.

Condolence from Sue Silcox on May 25th, 2020 11:59 AM

Lori was not just my mentor but my guru at HB Beal. I started teaching in the fall of 2001 and she and Diane and I shared an office….we laughed and cried and kvetched about the magic and madness of our school. Beal is such a wild place….Lori took all of the time in the world to acquaint me with its ins and outs. Our Snapple Hour at the end of the day was full of love and laughter…over the smallest, silliest details. Her immense dedication to the kids (especially those who needed a champion) is admirable to say the very least. She brought me into even more leadership positions, introducing me to the PULSE Retreat, CSLC (especially our trip to Vancouver and our host year), and innumerable wacky ideas for fundraisers (Wakeathon….um okay!?!). She is a force of good and light…and the Lori Legacy at Beal and Beyond will endure forever. We at Beal will continue to cherish that.

Condolence from Raz on May 25th, 2020 12:06 PM

Lori was someone who I loved very deeply. Everyone who knew her, loved her. She brought sunshine to my life when it seemed there was only grey skies. I had only known her for a short time but every time we did anything together we were guaranteed so many laughs and silliness. Every day I still wake up waiting for a message from her good morning love, good morning sunshine. Forever in my heart she will be a part of my life. Tristan my heart goes out to you, I will forever be here when ever you need someone.

Condolence from James Grant on May 25th, 2020 12:08 PM

So many thoughts of Lori and Tristan as where there was one you would find the other. Now I loved to see Lori in the morning as she always gave me the return happy greeting, then the thoughts and plans, ideas for the future would start with the planting of a seed. That first plant came from an assembly at Beal when the returning crew from Abbotsford had a slide show and announced that Beal was to be the host in 2007, Lori asked “any staff wanting to get involved please come to the lunch meeting in 234 and bring your energy” I went to that meeting and met my future Ball of energy Silcox. At the end of the meeting I told Lori I was in but let me know when things settle a little bit. I loved Lori’s leadership and was always happy to help, Scrooge and Halloween dances even one when the smoke machine set off the fire alarm and I was helping out dressed as Sherif Woody. I will miss her more than words but am sure thankful she showed me what a teacher leader and defender of all can be. May the Force be with you on your eternal journey my friend” And thanks for Silcox.

Condolence from Janaine Rake on May 25th, 2020 12:10 PM

You will be so deeply missed by so many. Your kindness and love towards others was genuine and never wavered. We are all better because we knew you. As your memory lives on, so do your messages of kindness. Thank you!

Condolence from Dawn Davis on May 25th, 2020 12:22 PM

I do thank God for Lori. Anyone who knew her is better because of how she enriched our lives. She embodied service, selflessness and sacrifice for all she met. She was kind and loving and hated having attention on herself. She blessed others with encouragement and empowered students and colleagues with wisdom and strength. She was an advocate of humanity. She loved and was loved. She will be missed more than any of us can imagine. Ann Marie is correct…she is one of a kind and her shoes can not be filled. But, we can all endeavour to show the kindness and care that she did to everyone, so that everyone can be the best they can be. She’d want that. I love you Lori and I thank God for your friendship.

Condolence from David Weaver on May 25th, 2020 1:18 PM

It is with overwhelming sadness that we have to say goodbye today to our dear friend and colleague Lori. My deepest sympathy goes out to you Tristan and all of your family.

I have valued so much working with Lori for 20 years at Beal and have so many fond memories of the wonderful things she has done for our students and staff. In 2018, Lori asked the Beal Singers and Beal Musical Theatre to sing at the Global Student Leadership Summit which she organized at the London Convention Centre attended by thousands of students from 20 different countries. As a thank you, all the choir members received a special t-shirt to wear for the day. That was one of the nicest days – I will never forget it. By coincidence – I was just wearing this special shirt on Wednesday, the day that Lori passed away. On the shirt is the conference logo and in large letters, one word, “HOPE”. Lori gave HOPE to so many, especially to students trying to find their way in this sometimes unfriendly world. She taught leadership classes, but the biggest lesson she taught was kindness and that lesson she taught by her own life example to others. Lori will be deeply missed and she has left an enduring legacy in the lives of her students and all who were blessed to know her. I am thankful to God for Lori and so grateful that I had the privilege of being blessed and encouraged by her life.
With deepest sympathy & gratitude,
David Weaver, Beal Music

Lori was the kind of teacher that could make anyone who felt lost, feel found. She made you feel seen and important, and that you were good enough to achieve anything you set your mind to.
I was in the original group who created PULSE, with Lori at our core. We were treading in unknown territory at the time, but she gave us the confidence to keep moving forward. She taught us how to be true leaders, and how to be kind and understanding. She was such a sweetheart and a one of a kind soul. Her legacy will live on, and we are so lucky to have known such an incredible woman.
Rest easy, Lori.
